Buy the Panasonic X1000 here: amzn.to/2DUuxx2
Extra battery: amzn.to/2XObQ55
What I like:
*well balanced in hand
*20x zoom lens - 30-600mm - 49mm front lens ring
*Excellent image stabilization. Uses Power O.I.S. in 4K, 5-axis hybrid O.I.S. in HD mode
*Full of manual controls on body
*Built in ND filters - 1/4, 1/16, 1/64
*Can use Panasonic/Varizoom controllers
*Great battery life
*Touch focus on LCD screen
*Tons of codecs and frame rates - Cinema 4K/24p, 4K ultra 60/30/24p - 100Mbps - 150Mbps in MP4 mode, 1080/60p at 200Mbps ALL-i in MOV
*Adjustable cine-like settings - same as Panasonic pro line - Detail Level, Chroma, Gamma, Knee, etc. - Cine-Like D and Cine-like V presets!
*No 4k cropping
*NTSC/PAL switchable - world camera
*Timelapse mode
*IR mode
What I don’t like:
Uses two built-in Venus processing engines to scale the 4K image down to HD, but I think that causes fan noise. This camera is kind of loud.
Small sensor 1/2.3” MOS - not good in low light
Not good in low light. Lens is f/1.8 - f/3.6
LCD is bulky
Touch screen, not as responsive
Physical menu dials not responsive
EVF is not clear, really small
No 1/4 20 mounts.
Lens cap is practically permanent
Focus, Zoom, Iris are electronically controlled, so there is a delay in operation
No 3.5mm mic jack?
Odd choices for codecs and frame rates - AVCHD only 1080/720/60p,1080/60i from 8Mbps - 28Mbps
Strange features:
*Blue ring light around body, turns red while recording
*NFC to connect camera via Panasonic Image App to tablet or smart phone, but iPhone doesn’t support open NFC. Android.

The delay on the control rings is not so laggy that it is a problem when adjusting on-the-fly. I was coming from a consumer model HCV-770K that used a "multi-manual" dial for all manual settings, so having three rings is a huge improvement for manual shooting compared to the V-770. You complain about the lack of a 3.5mm microphone jack. I prefer pro audio features. I have a large assortment of microphones, including condensers, so I consider the locking XLR with optional phantom power a feature, not a drawback. If I am using a 3.5mm microphone, then I have a Rode mini jack to XLR adapter in my camera bag. If I need a 1/4" or RCA inputs, I have adapters for those as well. XLR is by far the best, so I'm glad that it is the native audio input on this camera. Also, it should be mentioned that the phantom power / mic level / line level on each input can be controlled independently, and each input can be routed to either L/R channel or both, or you can switch to the built in microphone. You talk about the poor low light performance due to the smaller sensor, but the gain on this camera is better than some others I've used, so it partially makes up for this.

Thanks for the overview! How does the footage from the Panasonic HC X1000 compare to similar priced camcorders such as Sony and JVC? From what I can tell it seems that Panasonic is not near as sharp. I'm in the market and really want to like this and the new DVX200 but I am just not seeing the image quality... Any thoughts? Cheers, Greg
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 9 жыл бұрын
+Greg Allen As far as image quality goes, when shooting 4K and editing in 1080, the image is sharper than an HD Sony or JVC camcorder in the same price range. However, the 4K from a GH4 or even an FZ1000 bridge camera is noticeably sharper than the 4K from the X1000 due to the smaller sensor. The biggest downfall with the X1000 is the absolutely terrible low light capabilities. I rate this camera at an ISO of 200 and once you start adding gain, your blacks turn to green mush and the digital noise is unbearable. If you shoot outdoor daylight or in well lit studios, this is a great bang for buck. If you shoot in uncontrollable situations, a GH4 is a better camera or go up to a DVX200.

Smaller sensor doesn't mean less light. The lens captures the light. A bigger sensor does need a bigger lens capable of shining light over a larger surface that could mean it is a faster lens as well.
@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 6 жыл бұрын
True. Lens is a determining factor of low light, however in 2018, if you put a 50mm full frame lens on a full frame sensor camera and then put that same exact lens on a super 16 sized sensor camera, the full frame sensor will be better in low light, therefore, my point is the larger the sensor, typically, but not always, will give you better low light capabilities. If you have examples that contradict that idea, I'm curious to learn from it.

@VideoGizmology
@VideoGizmology 6 жыл бұрын
You have a lot of options for KZbin and Online video camera. Low budget HD: Canon HF G30/G40: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmjWc5iMlKuio5I High Budget HD: Canon C100 Mark II with 10-18mm, and 24-105mm lenses. 4K: Canon GX10: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWW8fZeEn6ihfLs Panasonic AG-UX180: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpTcfnd9j5trfdE Sony NX80 You could also use mirrorless cameras like the Panasonic G85, GH5, Sony z6300, but they come with plenty of issues. Remember that the camera really doesn't matter. Make sure it has a wide lens, 28mm or wider, microphone inputs and headphone jack. Good autofocus. Besides that, your audio and lighting are more important. Spend extra money on audio and lighting and less money on the camera.

What are the primary differences in this camera and the UX180? This camera is on sale for about $1,000 and the UX180 is about $2500 right now. I don’t want to waste money on a camera that is only slighter better than this one. Would you recommend this or the UX180?

They are very different cameras. Nearly everything about them is different, but at the of the day, if money is your greatest concern, get the cheaper one. The UX180 has a better zoom lens, better and larger sensor, better in low light, has SDI and Timecode out ports, it's a larger body, better codecs, better image quality.... I could go on.

You're wondering why it uses a small sensor. Well, the reason is that it wouldn't be possible to put a 20x lens of this size to a larger sensor. Bigger sensor means bigger and much more expensive optics. This is a ENG-type camera. It cannot compare to a DSLR, different purposes.

This is not good for narrative drama. It looks too much like video and not cinema. Of course, a good drama is more about the writing, acting, and directing than it is the camera, but this model won't help. Stick with digital cinema cameras or larger camera sensors with interchangeable lenses.

If recording 4k/30p, it's 100Mbps - so a 64GB card will give you a little over an hour of footage. I typically film long events, so I get 256GB cards. If you shoot documentaries or anything long form, a 256GB is a good size. If you only film short content, then a 128GB card is great.

If you do a lot of outdoor daylight filming, then yes. If you shoot both interior and exterior and need a good low light camera, then this is not a good choice.
