I first went to Hounslow with a friend's mother to shop in a very untidy little place that was known to be cheap and good for bulk buying food stuffs. The very first Tesco! That was in 1965......... I went back in 72 to buy a nice coat........... But now the place in loaded with spitters and people who don't care where they throw rubbish who like to destroy what once was a nice little place to explore. Hate it now! Great video thank you.

Fascinating. Thank you for this. The town planners have a lot to answer for. It could have been an attractive town.

The interior of the old Safeway store was used for the internal shots of the battle during the film Hot Fuzz. The external shots were filmed in Wells, Somerset The result of this was the that the internal size of the supermarket is a lot bigger than the outside!

I grew up in Hounslow in the 60s, went to the Junior school in Martindale Road used to take the A1 bus to Heathrow to spot planes, play bowling at the Ambassador lanes, we used to attend the Saturday cinema at Hounslow West, we'd go boating at the lake near the swimming baths, I bought my 1st LP vinyl in 71 Jimi Hendrix just after he died, my Mum used to go ballroom dancing at Hounslow and Hammersmith, We'd frequent Hounslow Heath as kids with no fear of attack or violence, We'd frequent the 117 bus route all over, take the tube from Hounslow West up to London and back with no worries and we were fully occupied and happy. I left before I was 18 but goodness, it's changed soooo much, not so much the architect but public attitudes. It "SEEMS" to be a very unhappy area now but I'm only going on people's videos and blogs. Good to see this though, it's instilled some very happy memories. Gratitude for your upload

@genie121 Highway robbery was the thing. Obviously people travelling on routes close to London were vunerable in such a wide open place. I suppose London was still the rich centre of the country so it made sense for the Highwaymen to operate close to where their 'customers' were.

I stayed here for a period of 6 months. Always wanted to know the history of this town (which now I feel is just considered to be a part of London). Any idea what was there in the area which now occupied by the Jamia mosque etc.? Was it part of the heath?

Why was "Hounslow Heath" known to be the most dangerous for more than 200 years? was it just an isolated place?
@montec47632 жыл бұрын
11 years too late but I might as well answer anyway... The Heath was a big route to other parts of England back in those days. A lot of carriages went through there carrying valuables and important people, so highwaymen frequented the area, sticking people up for their possessions. It didn't help that the area was isolated, and rather wild, yeah.

I was born jan 1948 and raised in feltham. Lived there until 1973. From around 1953 i would go with my mother to honslow ever other saturday for shopping. I would really look forward to this, it was a speciall treat. We'd go into woolwothers and my mom would buy hot salted peanuts. id eat them on the bus going back to feltham. By the time id got home, the peanuts were all gone. Yes there have been many changes to hounslow. Like the toilets in the middle of the high street. Its called progress, good or bad. Who knows!!!!

Lived and grew up in Hounslow from mid 60s to early 2000s and always had an interest in local history. This is an interesting video but could have been so much better had the presentation been more engaging and interesting. Commentary should add to the pictures, not simply read the text displayed or repeat dates that are already visible on photo's. There are so many stories and history behind the pictures that could have been added much richness. History is now the best part of Hounslow and should be relished.
