@Christy Dolan Armstrong may have avoided financial ruin - but he has been massively humbled, you can see the difference in him compared to when he was on top. He says he is over being caught, yet he also still bears a grudge towards Floyd Landis. Why? Because Landis is the person who instigated his downfall. I watched the new ESPN documentary interview with him and he's still clearly bitter.

Kind of, at the time the mentality among the riders was it's our sport, none of the officials need to know, none of the fans need to know and none of the reporters need to know, this is how it has always been, the riders always get screwed over and treated like Mules so screw everyone else..... The actual fact of the matter is those days were dead and over with after they stopped making the Tours 4,000 kilometers long, back then drugs weren't just necessary but in all honesty a doctor would say that those guys should be prescribed steroids for health reasons they are torturing their bodies and losing 10-20lbs over 2-3 weeks and it is very unhealthy. David Walsh, in the end, got exactly what he deserved, his rightful status as an absolute professional who did his job at the very pinnacle of his field and he is now thought of someone who never lied or manipulated or stretched the truth to print tabloid like sensationalism, but was a true professional the entire time

I do have to say that Lance was scapegoated by the system. I'm not saying he was not guilty and responsible for his own cheating and certainly the worst thing about him was how he tried to destroy others. HOWEVER, he entered a corrupt cult, so to speak, at age 21. For heaven's sake, the actual drug testing commission was basically set up as a don't-ask-don't-tell along with all the other officials, etc. There were a lot of lined pockets. Interestingly, while Lance was racing, there were basically no positive drug tests as far as I know. No scandals like the big one with the French team that occurred right before Lance came into his own. As soon as Lance retired (the first time), Landis tested positive. That basically reveals that as long as Lance was racing and cheating and winning, the pockets got lined, the don't ask don't tell code was in place and all the other racers could dope as well. Obviously, the winner gets tested the most. It is my opinion that Landis used the testosterone with the same schedule of avoiding detection as he had on the Postal Team and then was blindsided that that method was not foolproof except when Lance was wearing the yellow jersey. When things started going south with the Lance scandal, all the lined pockets pointed at him and were happy to let him take the fall for the whole corrupt system. So, in that respect, I do think that unfair.
@wvu053 жыл бұрын
Asteriskstrong had multiple positive tests. He just bribed the UCI to keep their mouths shut, and he turned in other cyclists he perceived as a threat. He had the most sophisticated doping operation, and he purposely ruined the lives of others who got in the way of what he considered to be his God-given right of the yellow jersey. (Yes, I know he is an atheist, but you get my point.) He deserves every bad thing that happens to him, and quite frankly, he got off light when the government was willing to settle their lawsuit.

@thesoultwins72 Жыл бұрын
@treasuretravel3816.......Mmm - despite your claim of not wanting to excuse him you do a bloody good job as an 'Armstrong apologist'. You blatantly overlook Armstrong's past - when at just 16 years of age and as an up-and-coming triathlete, he had already forged a reputation as the biggest 'pusher' in the sport and was more than willing to not only use PEDs himself but supply others. Armstrong then moved into professional cycling in the early '90's - at the exact same time as the massive explosion in the use of EPO. Coincidence? Maybe. But it's a strong possibility that given Armstrong's ruthless 'win at all costs' mentality he not only was using EPO but bullying his team to do likewise. And we all know to what lengths he would go to in his determination to achieve that objective. You disobeyed Armstrong at your peril and perhaps this is what elevates him to a completely different level as both a cheat and doper. Most professional cyclists that resorted to using PEDs did so in a relatively 'quiet' way - and although other pro cyclists and those involved in the sport may have suspected, the infamous 'omerta' within the peloton ensured it stayed within the peloton. But once Armstrong started winning races and gaining notoriety, he recognised the dramatic levels of power this brought with it - and he was not slow to use this. It was not enough to be in the vanguard in the use of more potent and powerful PEDs [such as blood-doping transfusions etc] but you had to commit completely to Armstrong's ideology. As he famously said himself - 'If you're not with us, you're against us'. And woe-betide anyone that stood in Armstrong's path. In effect Armstrong's psychopathy led him to set out to destroy the lives of those that not only challenged him [such as Irish journalists David Walsh and Paul Kimmage, Masseur Emma O'Reilly and ex-pro cyclist Greg Lemond] but refused to obey him. [eg: team-mates Frankie Andreau, Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis]. Sorry - but Armstrong is one sick individual and the lame excuse that 'everyone was taking drugs at that time' in no way excuses his disgraceful behaviour. Armstrong

I think a little bit of perspective is called for here especially in the doping context. Roache nor Armstrong are not mass murders. I can’t understand why Indurain , Merex ,Hinault were not perused in a similar manner. Why were both of these men confronted about their involvement with PED’s after they retired ? The gravy train that ran along in conjunction with their professional life saw no reason to interfere back then. Admittedly Armstrong behaviour against those who questioned or challenged him was utterly deplorable. Look at the damage that’s been caused in professional and amateur rugby today as a consequence of PED’s. Usain Bolt’s performance alongside Jamaican drug testing are questionable to say the least, or are we going to wait for the passage of time on this one.

Walsh on the one hand committed to the pursuit of the truth, but on the other did nothing but paint a dark picture of cycling, spending no time on its beauty, drama, spectacle, tactics, raw talent, technology or science. A deeply unfair unbalanced portrayal of a sport which still has a huge following in Europe because of its many magical and fascinating elements. Unfortunately David and Paul did a massive ammount of damage to cycling perception in Ireland, and tarnished the reputation of one of the most outstanding natural raw talent athletes Ireland ever produced in Stephen Roche. Answer or explain this David Walsh, despite the enormous advances in cycling technology, diet, recon, training, power meters, team buses, every fascet and including the evolution of drugs, but not one rider has repeated Roche's Triple Crown win since 1987.

I completely get the story about the idiotic yellow bracelets. A women at work bought a bunch and was trying to get everyone to wear one ... I handed it back to her and said I had no interest. She went on, “why not?! Lance this. Lance that. Lance Armstrong was not just a doper and a cheater. He was an outright criminal who defrauded sponsors and donors out of millions under false pretenses and deception, which are crimes in law. He should still be serving an extremely lengthy sentence if the law had been applied fairly and equally as it should.
