Thanks for this great video with a great content. But i have a question, why should i use Teachable or Thinkific if i could just build a membership website on wordpress with a paypal integration? Thanks for the answer.
@AmaniChannel8 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to simplicity. We went through a bunch of WP plugins to try to create a course platform. Teachable makes it so easy. I know there are a couple of products out there like Course Cats, and Derek Halpern has a course plugin too. I haven't tried those, but they may be great solutions.

Thanks for your advice. My question: is it okay to have the exact same course on more than one site at a time? E.g. Udemy, plus teachable? You mentioned started on Udemy and then going self hosted. Is this with the exact same course, or creating new courses when it's time to self host?
@annaszostak48303 жыл бұрын
You had mentioned that you can put the same course on different platforms but you need to change them a little bit. Is it because you can not please the same course on different platforms or just different platforms has different rules and expectations?

The real answer is, Udemy is a marketplace which gives your course more *POTENTIAL* visibility. Udemy has 30 million students (2019 currently) so the appeal is to stick your course up there and be seen without having to market the crap out of your course yourself. That's the initial appeal anyways. It's become a dumping-ground for lower-quality courses and self-proclaimed experts that try to jam a bunch of courses up on Udemy as a get rich quick scheme. Phil Ebiner is not one of those people though. He's legit.
@AlexBooster7 жыл бұрын
From a student's point of view (and I bought probably 50-60 courses on Udemy): 99.9% of programming/web development courses on Udemy are complete and utter GARBAGE! And that includes courses rated with 4.9 stars! So, star rating or "bestseller status" is completely meaningless for determining whether or not a course is any good. It's extremely difficult to find courses on Udemy that are actually worth watching, let alone worth paying for. But hey, that's just a student's point of view!
@coolunknown78466 жыл бұрын
Alex Booster could you elaborate on the things you don't like about most courses? I am a future course creator (not on udemy) and want to add as much value to my students as possible. Would be awesome if we could have a chat via pm.
@militaryupdates52436 жыл бұрын
CoolUnknown I could relate to what Alex said, the thing is.. those high rate courses give high hopes for the students like, after this course you'll be able to build your own apps, and that is total crap.. the projects are not comprehensive, the instructors teach you to build crippled apps or games ... while in real life, a real app would have an architecture and so many other stuff that they don't take you through

Personally I don't like Udemy courses, as an example, if I want to update my skills on javascript I prefer to learn from masters, people who are already killing it on the industry, as an example I prefer frontendmasters, egghead or wesbos over a udemy course with more than 100 lessons. udemy is not a niche website, there is no selection of skilled teachers and anyone can teach, so quality will never be at the top in this case.

Great video, I have a question. If I upload my courses to Udemy, then after some success upload them on Skillshare and then on a self hosting website. Why would people buy from the self hosting website when they can find and buy the same courses I uploaded on Udemy and Skillshare for much cheaper?
@BartekOdias8 жыл бұрын
Teachable and Thinkific is not "self-hosting on your own website" as you say in the video. They host everything and you can brand it with optional white label pages without Teachable/Thinkific branding.
@VideoSchoolOnline8 жыл бұрын
that's true, but you could create an entire website with those two platform if you'd like.
@BartekOdias8 жыл бұрын
+Video School Online it's not technically correct to call them self hosted though. Using a LearnDash plugin on your WordPress installation with an independent host is an example of self hosted course. Otherwise they're hosted by Udemy, Teacheable, Thinkific, etc. which removes majority of the issues that come with a truly self hosted option.
@vailet1018 жыл бұрын
I see what Bartek means from a technical side although I do not think this information (what server a course is hosted on) is important for a content creator. Most content creators already assume that they will not need to worry about hosting by using another service.
@pacmanlp88766 жыл бұрын
vailet101 I do disagree. Host matters to creators. If I make my courses on teachable and they offer me to host all my content, the day I leave their platform I have no courses and had to make my course sute it all over from start in another place. That's the only big thing I don't like about those services. You are kind of hand tight to them.

Hello You tried to use a mix of the two platforms? I mean, subscriber customers under their own brand. Udemy course shifted to the surface.(Cost, energy efficiency) Thus, the subscribers are well maintained and you can own your brand. At the same time it removes a lot of burden on the shoulder and stay in a nice area of learning, student satisfaction. Contact is maintained and can sell them other products.

Thank you very much, Phil! A very useful video indeed. I started out on Thinkific, but I think I will also go onto Udemy (however, I'll have to split my courses into several parts so that I can sell them on there, since my courses' prices are higher than €150). Keep on working like that. Greetings from Spain!

I only see one advantage by using Udemy, that is they do the marketing for you to a large number of potential students, unfortunatelly for my first course that I'm about to upload I need some promotion, nobody knows who I am, I don't want to use Udemy cause my lectures sums more than 10 hours of content but if I don't do it I would have to manage all the promotion and getting customers by myself.

How does Intellectual Property work with Udemy and Skillshare? If I create an online course and put it up on Udemy, am I in any way protected from having that material stolen and uploaded by someone else? Am I forfeiting any rights to it by using those services, the same way we all agree Facebook owns any content we upload to that service? What protections exist against this sort of thing? Is there any way to copy write my own video classes if I chose to self host? Sorry if my question is vague or overly broad.
@VideoSchoolOnline8 жыл бұрын
As the course creator on both Udemy, Skillshare, and most other platforms - YOU are the owner of the content. BUT because these are big marketplaces with all kinds of people, there are some piracy issues of people downloading courses and putting them on other websites. It's really up to you to protect yourself. While Udemy is doing a lot to prevent piracy, but the pirates are very smart and usually find a way. I figure that my courses WILL get stolen. And there's not much I can do. If you do find your course on another site, you can do a DMCA takedown via Google so that at least their website won't show up in the Google search results. hope this helps!

I hate Udemy, I hate Udemy so much... their support is all stock answers, you get crazy stalkers, and currently I am making $300 on 13 courses, some of which are hot topics all of which are above the 70th percentile in the marketplace tool because of their crazy review system which really weights negative reviews and the total impossibility of maintaining SEO. I had a course recently which fell from 4.9 to 4.1 with only one review and the student had only done 35% of the course.
