Vidit Gujrathi reacts to the illegal move he made against Nakamura | ft. Anish, Samay, Beast

Making an illegal move might be common at amateur level, but we never see GMs making one. But at the Tata Steel Chess India 2019 super GM Vidit Gujrathi made an illegal move against Hikaru Nakamura.
For many of the viewers it was an unbelievable moment to see a top GM making an illegal move. Why did Vidit make the illegal move, what exactly happened. Because he knows he cheated, better to be called stupid than a cheat. This is a face saving exercise, for him and his fans. This is common in the Indian culture, and many others. They'd never publicly say he did it on purpose and was wrong, especially as he is their golden one, instead they mock him for being a silly boy. Another part of the charade is to act offended and theatrically over react at the slightest suggestion that he purposely cheated.

@@alexmercer6585 in many games and sports there are situations where the penalty for violating the rules is more advantageous to the outcome compete in a fair spirited way. Here, there was very little time on his clock. So by making the illegal move he has buoght himself more thinking time. He was in a no win situation, unless Hikaru makes a major blunder. This move could be seen as a cheap way to cause your opponent to blunder. So if he had any self respect he would have resigned rather than playing on for a tainted stalemate. It's not a difficult calculus given the board position and the level of the player.

I avoid them now because I just can't bring myself to stone another one to death 😂 As for your insinuation that I am spreading hate- Anyone who thinks the actions of one person should tar 1.3 billion others is stupid. But I am pointing out one of the cultural attitudes which I believe explains what we see in the video. I find this particular attitude annoying, I have seen it many times. Everyone does it, it's annoying, but the way South Asians do it is particularly annoying to me. But my response would be the same no matter who was doing it.

It is illegal to move your king into check, so for instance, you can't move your king next to the opponent's king. The goal of the game is to put the opposing king into checkmate, which means he is in check and cannot be saved by any of the ways of escaping check.
