When the thani avarthanam is given at such an edam of 3-thalli from Samam (after 3 counts from the samam), it is generally not acceptable to play Thisram or any other gathi bedham from samam-samam. It is unfortunate that the vast majority of the Mrudangam vidwans violate such a fundamental grammar point under the name of "Poetic License". The point is that the true artistry of the Mrudangam vidwan is exhibited only when he plays a captivating thani avarthanam in this case from edam-edam without indulging in any gathi bedham at samam...
