The Schwedenbrücke is a bridge over the Vienna Danube Canal and connects the districts of Innere Stadt and Leopoldstadt .
The Schlagbrücke , a wooden bridge mentioned in a document in 1368 over the Vienna arm of the Danube, which was not yet regulated at the time , was already located at this point in the Middle Ages .
In order to deal with the frequent problems with ice and flooding, the impact bridge was replaced by the new Ferdinands Bridge in 1819 .
It was named after the then crown prince, who ruled the Austrian Empire as Ferdinand I from 1835 to 1848 .
