WHO needs the rest of the orchestra (especially the strings) when you are able to articulate EVERYTHING via an entire horn section -- what MAGNIFICENCE !!! (While I am a trumpet player with 7 different "horns" of my own, I have always appreciated the way the true horns can "float in the Stratosphere" above the rest of everyone else. While "The Trumpet shall Sound", the composer, Richard Wagner said, "I wish I could score everything for HORNS."

basil paws well for starters congrats you've picked up the horn, I am also a horn player I was the only one in band for four years and when I got to highschool I met 6 other horn players so it gets better. Next PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE (if you don't and you're an idiot like I did it will bite you in the ass in a few years) Listening to sheet music and pitches on KZbin is a great source and you could ask your teacher for extra help before or after school. Also these are Vienna horns not French horns. Two very different instruments in the same family. Finally work on your embouchure, and posture It will help in the long run
@sealemonz41208 жыл бұрын
basil paws also be sure to ask the teacher to teach you how to read rhythms and patterns in music and not teach you using the piano or horn where the teacher plays it and you play it back. That really doesn't help you learn and understand your instrument and the music you need to read

I think the Vienna horn is more suited to the loud heroic sort of music like this than the regular F horn. It's just capable of more of a brassy bite because it's so much brighter.
@skisunfb6 жыл бұрын
It is both darker and brighter (more F overtones) depending on the application, but always horn-like. The difference is that they carry without having to force dynamics. Here's a great example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaiQnJ5up7Cpj5I

The biggest differences are in the key (most modern horns are double and have Bb and F keys built in, while Vienna horns are only in F), and in the valve action. The modern horn has rotary valves, meaning that when the valve is depressed the internal action rotates to redirect the air into the valve slide. The Vienna horn has what's called pumpenvalves. It takes a bit more of an explaination for them, but you can read about them on the Vienna horn Wikipedia page.

I love Music. This piece (this video), reminds me of my own dream, once lost. I played the trumpet, early in life. I was not really good at it, but I was good enough to play in a U.S. Army band for 8 years. There I learned to love hearing the French horn, and was given the opportunity to play that too, with them. I stopped playing it, shortly thereafter. Today, I wish I had a French horn again, to feel it; to hear it; to play it for others that love it too.

Those musicians are amazing. I would be curious to try playing a Vienna horn after 55 years of experience on double horns such as my Conn 8D. Being a single F horn, I would expect the Vienna horn to be more difficult to play accurately, but the Viennese swear by the sound, which is said to be the nearest thing to a natural horn sound on a valved horn.
@gregmonks Жыл бұрын
The 8D is vastly overrated in my opinion. I got rid of two of them several years ago. The 8D and many other doubles are downright squirrely in the high register. I own several pre-double 19th century horns, all of which entailed costly and extensive restoration, but the wait and the cost were worth it. One of my favourites is a German Eb/D (crooks) with a 14" bell. It's a huge, heavy beast of a horn, but one can use it to knock the cheap toupe off the conductor's head from 50 paces.

From what I can see, they are all Vienna horns, different from the usual French horn (or better said - Waldhorn which is a horn for or from the forest) in that the Vienna horn is actually a single F horn, not the double F-Bb horn with a thumb valve which we usually see. This gives the horn a really sweet and emotional sound, in my opinion. The valves are piston valves also, different from the usual rotary valves normally used on the horn. Vienna horn players will tell you that slurs sound superior because of the different valves. As a double horn player, I found the Vienna horn much more difficult to play when I studied in Vienna for a few years. But the Viennese are very proud of using the same traditional sort of horn for quite a while now. Back in the day, only Vienna horns could be played in the Philharmonic and they sounded spectacular.
