Outstanding! As I see it, there's nothing profound about this piece: it's a vehicle for technical fireworks, and Bernhard Hirzberger is more than equal to the challenge. What a ride! Thanks.

You show off. The word "rubato" comes to mind. Playing it straight through might seem accurate but with a little more rubato the drama of this great work might come through even more spectacularly. In either case, well done... well done. Blessings. CVD

It was really well played on the technical level but I think it sounds better a touch slower. It calmed down a little later on in the piece but the opening was at a heck of a pace.
@Eleuthero5
@Eleuthero5 9 жыл бұрын
A touch? Good grief, the ruination of the opening destroyed the whole piece! Also, the slow-soft section after the opening was played in a mushy legato style. Yuck.
@AnthonyHunt77
@AnthonyHunt77 9 жыл бұрын
Well you're entitled to your opinion but to say that the opening ruined the whole of the piece is grossly absurd. Do you play this yourself or are you just contented to be the snobbish armchair critic? This is a live recording too don't forget, so nerves might have gotten the better of the organist to begin with! And I personally like the legato section
@Eleuthero5
@Eleuthero5 9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Hunt Well, you're entitled to your opinion, too, and it's just that ... an opinion. Yes, I play the harp. I've heard perhaps a dozen renditions of this piece and it's my least favorite. If the organist's "nerves" "got the better of him" he certainly had no qualms having it put up here on KZbin. The "nerves" argument almost sounds like an implicit agreement that it's not a top shelf rendition.
@AnthonyHunt77
@AnthonyHunt77 9 жыл бұрын
If it wasn't a live recording then yes, I would have expected better from someone as obviously talented. But seeing that it isn't, you have to make allowances. And you as a musician should know that in live performances things do not always go as planned. I have been playing the organ since I was 12. I appreciate how hard this piece is.

It is certainly interesting to hear Vierne on a more Germanic instrument. I think some of the more critical comments are actually more about the organ than the interpretation. If this performance were on one of the great Cavaille-Coll instruments this composition was written for, we'd be rating this much higher.

This is on my FAVORITES list! I only wish I could even attempt this! Some have criticized him for being too fast. The manuscript shows mm=96. He does start out near mm=102-104 but settles in around mm=100. Not that much faster. You can see why he didn't want it to drag! PLAY ON!

Pyrotechnic in its speed but it sounded exceedingly muddled to me. There's also a lack of volume contrasts to create moods. It sounded like a fabulous technician's failed attempt to create music but music is not "typing" the correct key as fast as possible.

Well played, but where is the fire? I know tempo is always an interpretation of the performer, but I would definitely lower the speed just a bit. It would make the intricacies of the piece more evident and provide a better listening experience for the listener. Just because you can play it fast doesn't mean you have to play it that way.

When I studied this... At my first lesson with this work, I came in with a "Toccata" detached technique.... My teacher (a very famous concert organist) got all over my case about the "detachment"... He wanted it VERY legato... and to strictly fallow the legato phrase markings...GREAT writing! I just recorded this work for a local organ program on our classical radio station...
