My brother was there until 6/15/68 , When He was K.I.A. ,fighting for his country , by an N.V.A. Sniper, I was 9 YRS old ,it took 10 yrs . before I could start to beleave he was gone . As a USMC, I served on Gio Linh for 20 months. When I first arrived, (March of 1967, I was the seventh Marine on the hill known as Alpha II or Hill 46. We ate C-Rations for over one full year - some of them as old as I was! Our group were anti-artillery radar. AN/MPQ-10. There were to small Army units - one another anti-artillery radar - AN/MPQ -4 and another army group - Sound Rangers, Maybe 30 USA fighting men on the whole hill. It was an essentially an ARVN base. We had two or three observation towers but rarely used them. Hobbies included rat hunting in the early evening with any pistol we could dig up. I had an old pilots 38 special, most had 45 cal. US Navy Corpsman Victor Bravo and I had to help some wounded board the med-evac chopper one day. I never realized that they took him away as well. He survives today!

Was at Dong Ha with 8th of the 4th artillery (and at Khe Sanh) until they stood down in October 1971, then moved to Quang Tri with 1/39th and finally to 2/94 when it moved to Da Nang. Always in battalion fire direction center in the Headquarters Battery. Derosed in March 1972 - just in time to miss the Spring 1972 offensive. Saw most of it on Walter Cronkite where I saw the quonset hut we had at Quang Tri beside the Quang Tri airfield get blown up. Whew! Thanks for the video.

My uncle Bill Edmister served at FSB Ripcord with the 506th and was wounded there on July 22, 1970 and was awarded a silver star for pushing into enemy fire to rescue three soldiers after he had been shot. Would love to hear from anyone who knew him and served with him there. He passed away from cancer before I was old enough to ever ask him about it. In fact i never even knew he was there or wounded until I saw his commendation at his funeral.

Major props to all the Veterans of this war, including those on both sides of the conflict. I feel that the Vietnam Vets have always been my favorites, though I respect them all, but something about these soldiers and those that fought for North Vietnam as well...all faced the most horrific battlefield consequences and situations and when the old enemies meet today there is a grudging and mutual respect, much like two old boxers long-retired who had a great trilogy, these soldiers fought the real war, not the so-called "war" they always try to call sporting events. Thanks to all those Vietnam Veterans for their service and the absolute hell that they experience. Much love to all of you brave souls out there!

Served in Alpha Co. 1-11 Inf. Was in a task force out of A-4. Choppered in to DMZ to secure an LZ to pick up a Ranger team that had hit the shit. Went on a night ambush patrol to the bridge on Route 1 between C-2 and A-4. Pulled security on Dong Ha Mountain (Fuller) 3 times. Spent Christmas & New Years '69 on Dong Ha Mtn. (Fuller) Was in a platoon reinforcing Capt. Blunt's Co. when Fuller came under siege in May '70 (Jesus Christ).

I served with HQ 2-12 in 1967 we set up this fire base in Gio Ling it was a very nasty place and the horrors of it are still real in my mind today after 50 years... just traveling to this base was unhealthy and the poor dudes that drove those red dirt roads hauling artillery ammo took a beating there flat bed trailers could be seen along the sides of the road going into the fire base there at Gio Linh they were burned and blasted from ambushes by the NVA Army etc this base along with Con Thien on up Route 9 from Dong Ha and C-2 above Cam Lo... we as a unit 12th Marines moved from Hill 55 South of Da Nang in the Spring of 1967 up the coast North as far as we could go to the river mouth at Cua Vet where the ramp was dropped on the ship so we could drive off our equipment and ride Mike Boats to the Ramp at Dong Ha city then we carved our way with D-Cat bull dozer's driven by brave Sea Bees as they were known... they were engineers and built our bunkers and trenches along with what we as single force Marine would build too for ourselves etc up the DMZ and literally dug in artillery on the back side of this soft brown Hill of Angels these villages and towns of course did not look like the video shows in 1967... I happened to be awake on guard as corporal of the guard and while making my rounds early one morning saw what I thought was Navel Gun fire coming from the coast beyond Dong Ha Air Strip which was the Headquarters of Delta Med ... Graves Registration... or Fuel dump... Ammo Dump and Logistics Base for the Leatherneck Square area... anyway the flashes i saw were really rockets that were coming into the base and landing strip the ammo dump and fuel dump was hit and cooked off for nearly 24 hours as we were kept on what was called RED ALERT... we were in a bad spot at that time after losing all the equipment and ammo artillery shells etc and fuel... the base at Dong Ha continued to blow up all day with moments of HUGE explosions going on... it's a wonder anyone of the Marines in those places there in the ammo dump and fuel dump survived... so many stories and so little time... I was there again in 2007 being filmed for a documentary about PTSD a short clip of it can be found at You Tube under the title mike birthday broadband... it shows me in the city of Hanoi where I am being escorted up to see the remains of Ho Chi Minh under glass as long trails of people who honor him were interupted so I could view him laying there... he looks just like his pictures with his long whiskers still there he is known as Uncle Ho to the people... My nick name was SNURF and my name was Mike Hendershot I was there at Leatherneck Square for 20 months in 66-67-68 etc if you know me lets communicate I'm getting old and 100 % service connected for PTSD and Agent Orange as it was sprayed on us that summer of 1967 although we were never given any information about it I just looked up as the silver prop job planes flew over wing tip to wing tip and sprayed etc it cleared all the vegetation out and every thing was rolling brown dirt hills with little safe cover for the NVA any longer... I have live all my life on the West Coast in Southern California... I'm on my way out these days with so much to share about my recovery which is on going etc... I'm thinking about my Marine brothers those lost for this waste of life and those who may still be alive like myself for some reason... Semper Fi

Don S,,,,,your correct, I was there, when the bunker was hit, and hit again in November when 7 wounded marines from 3/4 were killed with a 20mm rocket, but we got about 600 NVA during the 3 day fight, thanks to 3/4 marines

In 1970, I was stationed at Dong Ha Combat Base as a Specialist Four, E-4, Field Radio Relay and Carrier Equipment Repairman (MOS 31L20), assigned to the 178th Maintenance Company of the 1st Logistical Command. Our bunkers were located on the Northern perimeter of Dong Ha, to the right of the gate, and when standing guard duty, each night we could watch the tracers and explosions as Firebases Charlie One, Charlie Two, and/or Alpha Four were attacked. One time, sappers blew up the POL dump (i.e., "Petroleum, Oil, Lubricant" storage) at Dong Ha, and a photograph of it appeared on the front page of the "PACIFIC STARS & STRIPES" newspaper. We frequently received H&I (i.e., "Harassment and Interdiction") fire from North Vietnamese 122mm rockets. Each Sunday, I would hitch-hike to and from Quang Tri to attend Mormon church services. Later, I volunteered to go to the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), where I was assigned to the 501st Signal Battalion (Airmobile) at Camp Eagle.

Love this video. Stationed with 1st Bde, 5 Inf division in 70 and 71. Been to all these places when the brigade lead the Vietnamese incursion into Laos. Little strange becuase the areas look built-up and populated now. The brigade lost 30 men in May 1971 when a rocket went into the mess hall at Charlie-2.

Interesting video, I spent a lot of time in those areas, in 1969 and the first couple months of '70. I'd like to point out an improperly located position on your map, atabout the 6:48 mark. You have Vandergrift Combat Base improperly located to the east of where it really was. It was actually located west of your position and rt 9 ran right through it. You have it located south of Camp Carroll, but it is actually WSW of Carroll and due south of the Rockpile. Semper Fi and God Bless! Gunny T

Con Thien & C2 Fire Bases, 1970 PH, BS, lots of memories... Around June or July a C2 bunker full of brave men perished (about 30 or more) from a rocket launched from Rocket Ridge. An article was published around 2010 about the terrible occurrence saying it happened in 1971. I contacted the publisher, said "sorry you have the wrong year". So many stories of these stories need more confirmation before publishing. They denied it happened in 1970, so I said well then it must have happened twice... so sad.

@dbanik Day 1 was in Hanoi, then we flew to Phu Bai on the evening of day 2 and spent the next 5 full days in Hue, Quang Tri, Dong Ha, Khe Sanh, DaNang and Hoi An and left for Pleiku on day 8. There was not enough time to go to as many of the old firebases as we wanted to, so we'll have to go back again in a couple of years. We set up the tour ourselves. The guide's name is Pham Thanh Hung, nickname Tano and I think we used Huong Viet Travel but Trails of Indochina does a good job also

Sgt Long - I was there in Gio Linh in 1967. We counted rockets every day. The least number was 26. The VA said I never was in a combat situation. That’s only one of many.

Something Hollywood and a lot of public perception is our troops blasted CCWR all the time. My Dads CO liked country and gospel. When noise discipline was not a issue Hank Williams Senior and bluegrass gospel was played. Dad was in during the mid 60s so his 50ish year old CO banned rock, blues, jazz and what he called the worst offenders" bubble gum tennie bopper songs and hippy music" He was born in the 1920s so you can imagine his musical taste differed from the 18 year old grunts. Good video. I have heard stories about a couple of these places from Family. Now I know what it looks like. I tip my hat to you Sir! Thank you !

Thanks! 0:30 & 1:25 tank is M41 Walker Bulldog, US made, given to and used by ARVN. 4:51 PAVN (NVA) pith helmet, I think it is wartime, although they continue to be produced and used but with slightly different details. Surprised this one survived, I would have thought it would rot away. Respect.

It Looks a lot different now. In 1968 I was all over this area with MCB5. Building roads and gun pads for the 175's. I wonder if it still stinks as bad as it did in 68. I would like to go back there someday just to see if Camp Barns is being used.

Spent a number of months at C-2 or Charlie 2, and in November of 67 their was a big operation all around us, UPI with cameras and all were there, I can't find anything about it anywhere, we were just a mile south of Con Tien, anyone know anything about, I built much of the trenching and bunkers there, was from MCB 1 and the only Sea Bee at the base. The north used to send us breakfast and diner every day by way of 155's

To this day, I suppose all that old ordnance is worth more as a tourist attraction than it would be for scrap and most of the other surplus has already been sold on eBay. the bunker that was hit on c2 was mess hall bunker,if I remember it was 32 rave men Kia,we were there topping off our zippos,left as first rockets landed, we could see the rockets impact from our orderly room at HHT Dong Ha,they were under seine for days.

Was there topping off flame tracks when the attack started,a lt tried to get us to take shelter in mess tent but we were loaded and ready so we pulled out just as the gate was Weingarten closed,never forget,watched from our orderly room as the fight went on,we went out on several S&D mission during that time.

My father said his M60 tank is probably still sitting in same spot. Close to Boarder with N.Vietnam. It burned for 13 hours. Diesel fuel. 1966

I was on c-2 the day the bunker was hit,my unit left under rocket fire,a lt had hollered for us to go in the bunker but tow of our tracks were headed out so we went to,I think it was the mess hall bunker that was hit 30 plus killed,most by a single rocket.3/5 cav.70/71
