Actually, ViệtNam defeated the French in the final massive battle at Điện Biên Phu in 1954 and kicked the French out and proclaimed independence on September 2nd 1945. After which the US came in to fill the role and also got defeated in the fall of Saigon on April 30th 1975. That's a quick history summary from a Vietnamese here.
