I’m so glade my dad came back for me. I was born while he was on his second tour and he came back for a third one and got me and my mom out in 1970. I still have my passport from 1970, I was one year old.

My dad did the same with me after he deployed after WW2 he reenlisted just to come get us Took 3 years because they sent him to Korea 1st. I was naturalized when I was 13. I am one of the many fortunate ones. Many hardships were visited upon the civilians as a conquered people.

I was married to a Vietnam Veteran. He was deployed from ‘68-‘70. Knowing all the time he had gotten a girl pregnant he came back with seemingly no remorse of leaving her and his child there. Even though we were married ( and divorced) years after this I could never have respect for him knowing this. How anyone man can be so cold-hearted is a mystery to me. Yet there were many things about him I never understood.. Much respect to the men who have done the RIGHT thing.

I remember in a nail salon near Chicago there were two sisters working there who were Vietnamese but were obviously half black. They were very sweet they pulled a picture from the pocket of one of the sisters and showed me a picture of their father who was a black servicemen. They had contacted him here in America and he rejected them. He had a family and children and he didn’t want them to find out about these two little girls. They both had tears in their eyes when they were telling me about him and referred to him as “my daddy.” It broke my heart!!! They had a hard time growing up in Vietnam because they were obviously mixed race and they weren’t accepted by the Vietnamese people. They looked more black than they did Vietnamese but had the strong Vietnamese accent and spoke Vietnamese and were obviously half asian. I hope their life went OK I haven’t seen them since then.....

I am a 71 year old Vietnam veteran that came home from over there 20 SEP 70. This man is a very honorable good man that got to meet his son that was lost many years ago. When he found out that he had s son he did the right thing. Many men never even knew they had a child and died not even knowing and many of those children were American. It is truly sad that we now live in a time when just doing right is "called" heroic. To me it is those that go above and beyond just doing right that are heroes ; acknowledging your very blood and desiring a relationship with them is just normal humanity, not heroism. Let's quit cheapening the word , "hero" and making it cheap media used tool, true heroes deserve more respect and most real heroes died while becoming heroes.

First, THANK YOU for your service to our Country (US) and my other Half (Vietnam). Yes, I am Amerasian and would never be able to know who my Father is or even was. It was a hard time for sure and I hold no anger. I too suffered many years growing up with hates and a lot of people will never know how hard it was and STILL IS... Sometimes it haunts me to think what I deserved to go through things like this. Now, I think better and even more grateful and no longer hate. I think of all those 59K+ Americans (One was my Dad) and 2 Million+ Vietnamese Civilians who died. Because of that, I no longer hate and I just cherish for what is left. I just turned 50, my Mom just passed away 3+ years ago and I was left behind by my Father which I'll never know. People doesn't have to be heroes, just be people would be good enough.

One of the few happy stories of the Vietnam conflict.Gary is very lucky he wasn't MURDERD by the N.V.A.for being half American.I saw the results of the brutal treatment the south Vietnamese at the refugee camps in Thailand.In the mounths after many made it overland threwCambodia .The children were very sick and racked with malnutrition and disease.And I saw with my own eyes the Thais weren't very happy with having to give the U.N.a area to deal with them.I think that is why they were in a big hurry to close all the Air bases.I was at the biggest camp at Utapao.Clearly a lot of corruption going on with the food aid distribution and medical care!42 years on the pictures in my mind of those kids still haunt my very being along with my fellow MEMBERSof the 635 SPS.A very sad sad time.Many a time we gave up our rations to these starving people.I could write a book!I wish someone would tell the TRUTH about our allies the Thais.There government was worst than the Demacrates safe today in our country!

D. J. You are 100% right. Many soldiers leave woman pregnant in othercoimtries once they move to their next assignment. When the war broke in El Salvador, and American Soldiets were station there, they left many children behind. It is avery commonsituation around the world. That is why this dad should be praised for his act of honor and sense of duty. He went back to look for his son....... That speaks "volumes". I wonder what happened to his biological mother.
