Thank you, Dave and Dustin for inviting me to take part in this project. I can't wait until you interview my buddies; Ed Beal, Tony Cortez, Richard 'Doc' DelValle, Jack Hugele, Duane Bloor, Jim Braun and the others who deserve more thanks than they ever received when they came home from the war. I was lucky to have served with some good people who looked after me at times when I was too young or dumb to look after myself. By the way, the Army eventually did spell my name correctly on the award certificate and I did receive the three Purple Hearts.

You are a Hero in my book. One thing I wish for is that as we see our Vietnam Veteran HERO's later in life as middle aged men I would love to round up those fuckers that wrote the hate mail and see what they think of themselves now. My brother was so bitter by that kind of shit that he refused to discuss the Vietnam War for most of his life. Its only been the last few years that he started talking and even looked up some old buddies and now meets up with them every once and a while. I believe that it is every mans duty to serve his country and it should be law. I served in the 80's, my son served two tours in the Iraq war earned a silver star and a purple heart. There is no greater honor then to serve ones country!

I first saw the news report, and honestly for a while i was thinking that it was staged in some safe area of the jungle to get a good video for the american public. But then i found this video after searching your name. That hospital sounded like nothing less than hell. Very good telling of the stories you experienced.

I've been been to Vietnam, although it was 1984 as a kid, my father was working for the ICAO teaching ATC to the local boys. We where one of the few from a non communist country living at the American built hotel in the Saigon part of Ho Chi Minh, the rest lived at the French built hotel that I've forgotten the name of. Anyway, they still wished that America had won, although Madame Nhu and the ruling goverment was not in any way democratic and that was part of the problem why it all went 'south'. Anyway, soldiers are heroes, they don't get to chose and so should not be treated any other way.

Mr. Jorgensen, this is quite an experience for me watching your interview. I first saw the CBS clip some thirty years ago just prior to my entry into the Marine Corps (1987-95) where I would serve as an infantryman. The actions of you and your fellow soldiers left a deep impression on me. I went on to serve as a member of the US Army (11B) in Iraq 2004-05 while on military leave from the NYPD. I was medevaced (non-combat injury) out of the large Air Force hospital in Balad, north of Baghdad and I have to say that the Air Force medical personnel and I also have to say that they were truly outstanding and whenever I see an Air Force medic, I say thanks, they were angels. Thank you for your outstanding service to this nation. Respectfully, Bob Oles

Good story. I worked as a corpsman in a medical battalion for about 6 months in Vietnam, Receiving & Surgical I.C.U., 1966. It was truly a heavy experience, so much so I thought I was going to loose it a couple times. God what our young men suffered. Thank God I voluntared for the field even tho I was shot myself a few months later. I too would prefer the patrols over working in a medical battalion. Welcome home brother.

Thank you for posting this. The best thing about the interview is that it seems to be very objective, no pro or anti-war sentiments, just the personal experience of a soldier. I'm also glad that he represents someone who didn't go crazy after the war, contrary to what we're constantly shown in the media. Refreshing, though he almost got killed, like thousands of other soldiers. By the way, I really understand your sorrows about the boots. Is there a way to reach Jorgenson via mail?

Very few have the guts to do what you and your fellow soldiers did to preserve democracy and to then have to face a public who treated military personal so poorly. No comment on what many from that generation have done to this country. If nothing else we've learned recently to appreciate what the military and emergency personal do for us.

Mr. Jorgenson first of all, and I know you've probably heard this a million times over but it can never be said enough, thanks for your service. I hope that sort of nullifies the unspeakable crime of people that sent you the hate mail right after you were wounded. I'm currently reading 'Acceptable Loss' and I'm still waiting for my copy of 'Very Crazy, GI' to arrive via snail-mail (after nearly passing out at the shipping fees.) I'm happy to have found this video and the CBS report on youtube so I could put faces to the characters in your book. Just a small question-you're called 'Jorgy'; is this pronounced with a 'J' or 'Y'? (My American side would say 'J', while my German mom would say 'Y'....I'm a GI baby from my Dad getting drafted in '66 and stationed in Germany where he met my mom and brought her home.) You're right about combat medics. I really wanted to be one but being a young and dumb 22 year old my recruiter talked me into joining the combat engineers instead. (He said there wasn't "any openings" for combat medics...how I wish I'd known a little more about recruiters at that time.) Medics are a bird of their own feather-a type of sage and mother hen that dispenses medicine as well as words of wisdom. (At least the really good ones-like Duvalle.) Anyhow I wish you the best and I'm looking forward to finishing 'Acceptable Loss' and getting 'Very Crazy, GI' started. Do you plan on writing any more books?

How in the hell are you going to tell somebody you hope they lose their legs? I am a Marine and Army OEF disabled vet and never in a million years would I or could I say some crap like that to anyone.

It hurts my heart ❤ to hear of the vicious letters you received upon your voluntary return to your Unit and your buddies....I joined the Army at 17 in 1975 due to the way I saw the soldiers were treated on their return from a war zone...the Mayaquez incident sealed my zeal to enlist....the sad thing is that those type of dishonorable people are running the country into the ground today just for a dollar....God Bless you brother...

First THANK YOU! THANK YOU for your service and for your bravery. Second is I’m sorry that pieces of shit like those that sent those letters sent and did what they did. It’s always easy to speak or critique when 1000’s of mile safely away. People like you are a rare and amazingly courageous kind. You deserve and have earned the best of life.

Kregg you are a brave noble man. You were willing to put your life on the line for complete strangers in Vietnam in order to try and keep them free from communism. I'm so grateful that you survived your wound and was able to tell your story. God bless you sir

I was too young to serve in the VietNam war. I watched it on TV every night. Many of my friends had brothers who went. The soldiers were there because there were told that is what they had to do. America learned hard lesson from that. You can hate a war, but never, ever hate the person who served.
