My brother who was a marine in Vietnam had really bad PTSD I remember before he passed 8 years ago his nurse commented to me that he had a nightmare that the Vietcong we're after him I found out a few years later that his whole platoon got wiped out and he was the only one left he had to throw one of his friends over the top of him so he the VC didn't see him while they were stripping dead by marines boots off and personal items it took him 4 days before an American unit found him pretty amazing story in the end the veterans administration wouldn't let him go to a vet hospital he died in some hellhole in a rehab place when he was dying great way to treat your dying vets america.

I wrote this poem in 1996 while boldly confronting my own Vietnam PTSD... My Package On a day when I was a young, just twenty-one, Unknowingly I put on a shelf, a box of myself. My Package was an unknown ghost in my mind. I breezed through early life too fast, Two Sons, first one then another, wife, Making life’s mark… While My Package sat quietly, unseen in the dark. In the box were my fears, experienced in just one year, And put away when told to do so by my peers. It held lofty flights over jungles and fights, Dedicated to work by day, dodging mortars by night. Back home: “Why this war?” Throngs perplexed, In-Country, men here today, in a body bag the next. I came home to the Spitters, “Baby Killer” they said, I didn’t know why they wanted me dead! There were too few smiles, too many tears For a man of just twenty or twenty-one years. My Package now beckons to be in my face, As my age is but almost fifty, in life’s race. It will not keep shut - not let me be, It will be heard – the past – that year – the reality. It now has a life of its own it seems, Wakes me many a night – dreams – sometimes screams. Startled awake, my mind peeks into the box. It won’t stop – boldly raping my thoughts. I cannot keep it shut, try as I must, I live as taught – not a soul to trust. Withdrawn and weary I can think of little else, I’ll just exist until death, My Package off the shelf. July 1996 by Sp5 Patrick L. Sweeney Co. A, 227th Assault Helicopter Battalion First Air Cavalry, 15th Transportation Corps Cu Chi, Lai Khe, South Vietnam, 1969 – 70. By confronting my PTSD I have learned to live with it mostly. Events still bother me sometimes, and without my night time meds to keep me asleep, I am up at 2am…wide awake and thinking...again.

Alienation, watching your six, checking windows & doors, not trusting anybody etc I find these things in PTSD make life 10x more difficult than it should be. Live in the now. not the past nor the future...It’s just very difficult to find a therapist who does ptsd & paranoia etc, the average counselor cannot handle it, you are better off finding an experienced one. Stay strong & safe out there.

Well said Bruce. I have found in the last 50 plus years that too many VA therapists have an agenda to block or resend PTSD service connected awards. Sadly, for the younger vets still trying to get service connected, these VA gate keepers discourage them from ever trying again to receive any future help at all.
