@@namrats1968 Being a 4.2 mortarman I usually stayed on the forward fire bases. Six hundred and thirty six pounds of steel makes for too heavy a pop gun to carry around often. But there were times we did go on patrol or a mission and then we carried only a couple days rats, C's or LRPs, and ammo and some demo.

I entered boot camp Summer '75 and the MCI were ususally broken down by the infantryman issued his chow--the cans might be stacked inside a stock and the accessory packs went elsewhere, usually in pieces. That saved space because the packing boxes were inefficient compared to breaking down the meal and distributing the cans.

I really like Vietnam era gear and clothing, I have a small collection. I lucked out a few years ago and found a EDRL boonie hat in my size 7 1/4. Those are very difficult to find. I sure would like to find the tropical rucksack. I do have the indigenous rucksack that’s cotton, similar to the tropical but smaller with two outside pockets. Nice collection.

Most guys kept the insect repellent stuck in the camo band on their helmet along with a single .556 round (just in case). You need a tube of LSA and a shaving brush for your rifle. C-ration resuppy came in cases of 12 in a crate wrapped in wire. The prong flash suppressor came in handy to insert the wire, give the rifle a twist and bust the wire. I was in A 2/1inf 196th LIB. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoGtkKGlrZeVfrcsi=LhAdNfxAnYYmVWeb

@@WarKid-ut8mx Well to be honest alot of them thought it would be an adventure and volunteered. You have to remember that the World War Two generation were their parents so they believed Vietnam would be the same. Also the concept of post traumatic stress or the reality of war wasn't know that much back then. One of the reasons why public opinion changed against the war was because it was broadcast on public TV stations for the first time ever. American citizens simply didn't understand how bad war was until they got a close examination of it in their living rooms.
