Thank you for your teaching proper Vietnamese. I’ve been to Vietnam around 10 times now with my wife who is Vietnamese. I always seem to get it messed up when addressing people. Your video has helped me tremendously!

I wish you had more of these lessons here, you explain things very clearly. And I love that you’ve done them in northern and southern accent as well. The status/forms of address issue is such a labyrinth! :-) I’m 61 and getting into this a little late. I guess I’d often be tôi or bác but I also hear that people don’t use “tôi” all that much. And then what to call people a little older than me...argh. Such a basic part of speech, with so many ways to be inappropriate. :-))

I am a decorated war veteran and hold a high status in the US among my peers, family and those who meet me. When visiting Vietnam would I be Toi to everyone but the ruling class?

Yes. Even with the ruling class, you can also use "Tôi" to address yourself, but be sure to call him/her "Ông/Bà" (Sir/Madam), or address him/her by his/her title. e.g. "Mr. President", "Mr. Prime Minister", etc.

Ôi trời danh xưng là cái khó nhất trong tiếng việt luôn nhỉ. Người việt nam cũng phải học từ nhỏ đến lớn và không phải lúc nào cũng xưng hô đúng
