I know of two veterans who fathered children in Vietnam and Japan with no intention of finding them, mostly out of embarrassment and fear, but it just kills my heart. These children deserve better.

@@johnLennon255 sadly .. the children of half African American soldiers were instantly recognised and hidden away. For some reason a large amount of half African half Vietnamese are born with a recessive gene that causes bright red hair. You can tell instantly.. where as most half anglo and Vietnamese kids are almost indistinguishable from full blooded Vietnamese.. so they blended in a lot better. It's sad.

@M J Okay I am all for forgiveness. But I am speaking from personal experience. I dated a woman for five years. She was first in the South African airforce then got a job in the UN based in South Sudan. We were planning on getting married this year. I was basically a father to her daughter from a previous relationship. One day her daughter contacted me and told me she was saw naked pictures of a man on her phone and her mother was sending him them. Her mother even told her about this guy. Her daughter was really upset as she enjoyed our little family setting. I didn't want to believe at first but then I looked back at previous correspondences. All the stuff her daughter said added up as certain periods she would disappear. This also was a married man with children. Who was happy to break up our relationship. And deprive a young girl of a potential father. So yes forgive but I would never date someone in the military again.

My twin brother and I went through this exact same thing two years ago. We found our relatives after 50yrs in Newark, N.J. Our father had passed away in 1987. We also discovered that we had another set of twin brothers who are four years younger than us. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO MEET US, AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY CORRESPONDENCE. (By the way, we are a black family but that didn't matter) We also found two other sisters, but only one sister would ever acknowledge us. With all the cousins, and family we met, this was still a blessing. 💕

Well, I do understand that not every person wants to meet the offspring of their dad, especially if the offspring are younger wich means the dad was cheating on their beloved mother!! I would not want to meet them at all, I would feel I letmy mother down if I'd go and embrace the children my father did with another woman, meaning he was much away(in her home, with those children) and maybe missed out on our family-time!!!! I would never want anything to do with his un-manly and un-fatherly behaviour.

Go back home pretend nothing happened and go back to their normal lives. Stop sugar coating this. Alot of these kids ended up in orphanages, growing up with identity issues, growing up mistreated. The military actively discouraged soldiers and sailors from marrying and bringing Vietnamese wives home with them. My brother was a marine who planned to marry a girl from there but he was talked out of it.

This is crazy! I met an older black man who fought in that war and he told me that many of the black soldiers had Vietnamese wives and fathered children in Vietnam. When the war was over they were sent home and as we all know many returned to this country poor and damaged thus lacking the means to send for their families. This story just confirms what I was told in 2006.

It is real story, one of my friend grd father told me he has 2 kids in Vietnam (Indochine). He was a Tirailleur Sénégalais when i ask him why he did not take his wife and kids with him, he told me they were not alout to bring there family along. So i told him to go to the French Embassy to do some research but nothing happens

BUTLERU you have to think of the times. Those men were sent there for a job, not to make families. That would’ve been more money on the government to send them to the states. Those men should’ve been smarter....

Michael Maps thank you! I actually did just that a few months back and I found some distant cousins who were connected with that side of the family. I spoke with an aunt (dads bio sister) and she knew exactly who his father was. Unfortunately he passed in 2006 and my dad never got to meet him. But we’re all in contact with the family and it’s been such a blessing.

Awesome reunion story. Sad that his father had already passed on and he didn’t get to know him personally, but from the love and joy of his American family’s embrace at the welcome party I imagine that he finds comfort in seeing his father comes from a family with a huge spirit of love and support.

unfortunately many AA men left offspring overseas while in the military and didn't go back. They came home to their wives and picked up where they left off... Without telling their family they had other children.
