Honestly, people in VIetnam nowadays are not really pure (honest and kind) like before. There are still good people there, but not many like it used to be. I believe that Megan has experienced many bad things when she was there. Complete agree with Megan !

Actually her experiences and observations are accurate about Vietnam. Every country has it's own good and bad. Love it, hate it or accept it. And I'm Vietnamese.

That's why setting an expectation/spending some amount of time for research before traveling to a new country with a very different lifestyle and culture is quite critical. If you set your mind in advance, you're more willing to accept the bad things that happen and will have more fun trying to figure out why every country has some kind of issue.

@@seeyouinvietnam Common senses, if I know serious issues or scams are happening in the country where I will travel, hell yeah, I will change my agenda and pick another destination. Accepting and having funs are a bit luxurious and fancy words, honestly. However, if Megan provided her feedback on Vietnam's experiences from like 10 years, I may not be on the same page with her. Yet, what year are we living in, really? Your own president and prime minister always preach about Vietnam as a beautiful place to visit, and Vietnam is a progressive, developing country with high economic status. Then what Megan experienced is really Vietnam's reality, not from what your leaders preach each year. And by the way, you mention that foreigners should visit the countryside areas, outside the developed cities. I mean the foreigners' point to visit a particular city in a country is because it is advertised worldwide as a destined, developed, tourist, and traveling to place with many great and fun activities with affordable price. They don't expect crimes, be scammed, and harassed by the locals. Visiting the countryside area is ideal, but it does not afford the tourist industry's alternative revenues. And it reinforces Megan's point that the language barrier is one of the problems for many foreign travelers if there are no translators available. Coming back to your point that people need to research the country's culture and norms which they are going to visit, I am not really on the same page with you about this statement. Each person has a different situation. A person may have a honeymoon with his or her spouse or having a lifetime vacation. Generally, they may not have the time to do such detailed research about the culture and all the serious issues happening in the country they visit. Sometimes, they just look for generally positive reviews about the country and the destination they want to visit to make the decision. Of course, if the reviews are honest, they may be lucky, but it is a 50 percent chance they will still experience some setback. On the other hand, if some of the reviews may not be honest entirely, what do you expect? It is funny that She only provides feedback on her experiences, but most of the people in the comments somehow conclude that she is so offensive. Believe me, more people will not come back to Vietnam if they experience what Megan experienced, and because they believe in those people on the comment.

​ @Alan Nguyen I don't think tourists care much about tourism promotion on TV or in official newspapers. Social media, bloggers are probably the main source of information tourists often search for when planning for a trip. Of course, to make the sites more attractive, bloggers often show the good, beautiful aspects of the country they write about, however, they sometimes share some negative feedbacks, things they don't like about the country, that'd be very helpful. You're right, tourists don't often spend much while they take a trip to the countryside, however, the more people traveling out of the comfort zone, out of the touristy sites into remote, rural areas, there's more chance investors would see the potential to develop some countryside-based tourism, such as homestay, that can benefit both the tourism industry and the local community. For example, Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a great example well-developed tourism sites can benefit both the locals and investors.

Love Vietnam and coming from a western country, I can identify with all she said. My first day in HCMC was terrifying. I couldn't cross the street and was thinking all the locals wanted to rip me off or steal from me. It is an assault on the senses that takes a couple of days to relax and enjoy the cultural difference. The rawness is a key thing that makes Vietnam such an awesome experience for westerners and it is a pity the princess' vlog was poorly titled and misleading for potential visitors.

Exactly. Get well- equipped what you can find/get/ expect on the 1st few days travelling to a totally different country/culture. That’s good you spent the first couple of days to get used to Vietnam, I bet you had a good time afterward. Where did you go then?

@@seeyouinvietnam Hoi An which was much more relaxing than HCMC in a beautiful historic setting. Later Hanoi which had a similar feel to HCMC but with cooler weather.

@@nevmcc3884 Oh cool. We're living in Hoi An. moved from HCMC to Hoi An last year and loved it here. The Old town is historic, nice but could be crowded, the beaches and the rice paddies are things that make Hoi An attractive. We love HCMC for its energy and Ha Noi for its food. God, we miss those hot bowls of good Pho in winter.

Also a "white" tourist to Vietnam here... but I don't agree with her on most points. The drinking culture part, as a European I know that Europeans do equal dumb stuff when drunk or even worse, besides that she makes it sounds like she forced to drink which is absurd, when I'm in VN I often play football with my vietnamese girlfriend's cousins and their friends after which we head to a cafe to eat and drink. Beer is common but there is nothing weird with just going along with soft drinks. The noises part, as someone living in the Netherlands where the streets are mostly deserted after 18:00 except on weekends is something that I find quite attractive and different which is one of the reasons I travel all over the world. The pickpocketing, criminal activities, I have the feeling she felt targeted as a foreigner not realizing that this happens to locals just as much, only difference is that locals are perhaps slightly more prepared for it. All in all I find that she complains about a lot of stuff that are very typical of Vietnam or something that could be helped through basic common sense and awareness that everyone should have in a place they're not used to.

Things are unorganized, laws are not strictly applied, but there's a beauty of it. The thing we need to do is to make more people into cycling. Hey Dag Stijn . I’m a Vietnamese living in Belgium for more than 9 years . And thanks for your very positive comments . As a foreigner living in Belgium I agree with you about people doing lot of dumb things when they drunk . Hang out in Brussels and Antwerpen sometime for a weekend and witness a lot of it . Got my wallet pickpocket one time in Brussels and got my GSM stolen once at the bar but I never considered that I was targeting . It’s happened to me so it’s happened to Belgian people also .

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Vietnam. Cultural differences are one of the beauties of travel. Stepping our of your familiar box can be disturbing if you expect everything to be easy and the same as home.

Very diplomatic response to Princess Meagan's gripes. Yes she made some valid points but I also felt she misses the point of travelling. It's about taking yourself out of your comfort zone and trying something different. Being tolerant to people in a foreign country who have different priorities to you. Saigon is my go to destination in S E Asia. I love it because it's more edgy than places like Thailand. The people there are great, the food is amazing and I love riding on the back of a Grab bike. I try to avoid heavy tourist areas which can be a rip off. I feel safer there than in my home country. And I am dying to go back asap. My home away from home. Great video!

I first visited Vietnam about 7 years ago after starting in Bangkok in Thailand then traveled through Cambodia. I was expecting Vietnamese people to be more serious and less friendly, but they were the exact opposite relaxed and friendly. I have to agree about Saigon not being great. However Saigon is the same as any other big city in the world, less friendly, less safe, con artists, pick pockets and polluted. Once you start to travel around Vietnam things change for the better. Wonderful people and amazing places and sights to see. If you've visited a developing or poor country before then traffic, local markets and social behaviour are different but not horrible. If however you haven't visited outside 1st world countries, then you're in for some shocks and surprises. some will be fun and excicting some will be terrible and shocking. I've now lived in Vietnam (Can Tho) for 3 years and love it. Yes, I sometimes still find some things difficult but nothing serious. 1 thing I've learned is it's ok to say no to that beer being handed to you YO! Also food I eat what I want even when invited to a house, party or restaurant. I just 'thumbs up' food I like and thumbs down errrk yuk' food I don't like. No problem at all.

I agree with ya on Saigon. I've lived here grrr 8 years almost now and been ALL over Vietnam hell even lived in Can tho for some time and as far up as Lai chau/Lao cai. Saigon in my 2 cents is a real shyt area, its way more dirtier than it needs to be due to lack of care, the pollution has just gotten worse in 2021 which is odd saying we are in a pandemic for say. I always tell people the same line when they ask about Vietnam or people i know that have lived in VIetnam many years but never left saigon "Vietnam is an amazing country, the people are great the food is pretty good, but you HAVE to see Vietnam NEVER just sit in the south or north, never just sit in the city" I think personally my Best time in Vietnam was back in 2015 i lived in Son la with a Hmong family, it was a culture shock within a culture shock and an amazing exp.

I seen a lot of Vietnamese people in California. Some of them drive nice expensive cars in Orange County. Most of the Vietnamese people I’ve seen are decent people. I only have 1 former coworker who is Vietnamese that I’m not really fond of because he has anger issues and gets angry over too many little things. I’m just glad he retired last year and I don’t have to put up with getting all upset over so many little things.

My first time in Vietnam was amazong. the best experience that I ever had in my life ....I lived in 4 different countries , visited 37 countries living in places like California , Hawaii , Tokyo ..... But i fell in love in Vietnam , its not only the culture , its the people that i love , but let me tell you that Canada ain't the perfect country either , there's people that are not ready to travel , sorry to say those people should stay home in their comfort area . because of covid needed to go out of Vietnam and I felt so sad leeavinf Vietnam , wento to Chile , COlombia and US , but during all those amazing places i visited around South America and North America still missed Vietnam during that time , could not get out of my mind those beautiful moments in Vietnam , reason why when Vietnam opened after covid I decided to take a flight to Da Nang and here Iam back in Vietnam. There’s a lot of challenges fir Vietnam right now but the trade of is the large amounts of investing is going to the it’s economy. I’m sure many of these challenges will be solved as the country continues to develop. This is probably still a good time to be an expat in Vietnam. Nice topic! 👍🏽

You're right, I think most of the problems come from the awareness about the environment, the safety,.... I'm pretty sure many people/organizations are tackling these issues and trying to raise awareness for the people. The number of traffic-related death has decreased dramatically for the last 10 years. You were much likely to die from traffic accidents than it is today.

I've lived in Vietnam for almsot 8 years. I can say her thinking was not really that wrong. I showed that video to a few of my friends that live here in Phan thiet and they kind of had the same ideas as you as she was wrong and they where offended. I feel WE live here in Vietnam never seeing other countries first hand really don't understand the "Disagreements" others have about Vietnam. Vietnam is a gerat country but it def has its problems and lack of care, There is another guy Japanese guy that visited VIetnam back in 2017 and did a video about how he felt and honestly the video was not positive at all. Their biggest complaints where the constant yelling, honking, trash all over the place and the idea people can just pee on anything and no one seems to care.

Very good response, I was one of the "thumbs down" viewers. My experience in VN was wonderful and was always treated well. When travel opens up I'm going back as a pre-move trip for 2-3 months. I think the word Hate gets thrown around so much, so sad.

Vietnamese police should do their work and start issuing tickets to restless drivers. When I was there police are just standing on corners smoking and chatting, while everyone was going through traffic lights in every direction. The government has to enforce the laws.😥

I believe that foreigners who decide do rent or buy scooters for themselves to ride on their vacation should familiarize themselves a little with the 'laws' or locals rules of the road. Many people are quick to assume that it's the same from their home where: pedestrians have the right of way, motorcycles compared to cars/trucks have right of way, etc.

Riding a scooter in a foreign country where is famous with no-rule traffic should be a decision need to be considered very clearly. As Vietnamese, we find it hard riding doing road trips on scooter. However, spending a couple of days getting used to the how the traffic runs in Vietnam, how to use the scooters properly and then do a motorbike trip will definitely get you a once of a life time experience in Vietnam.

I'm Brazilian and I think there are many cities here in South America that a Canadian won't like too, because are very different and it results in a cultural shock for some people. So I´m from Guatemala and recently i was for a week in Hanoi. I loved it... LOVED IT. Yes there are "things" that you may not like, however people were friendly, food was amazing. Yes there were "tourist" traps were i "fell" however not to a big scam if you are smart, sometimes they are only people trying to make a living so yeah, have a coffee at their place and theyll leave you alone. The noise thing is real, very real, the first night I wasnt able to sleep however i eventually just accepted i and well... it was part of the charm. THE ONLY thing that i didnt like was entering and leaving Vietnam at the airport. Security and migration did not "recognize" my passport, I realize being from a "central american" country made them hesitant, however for a moment i really didnt feel safe and it was only at airports. People didnt believe my country existed until they "googled" it? however once inside... amazing I would love to live there in the twilight of my life.

Actually Vietnam is one of the country without or little scams , compared to countries near by . The Philippines scam is so bad from government to church. Vietnam actually is very safe and people treat well foreigners, that doesn’t mean that that will make them nice. Just like China or cuba people treat you nice for fear of the government. If a local mistreated a foreigner it could be painful for that person.

Ha sorry to comment 3 times. Your tip on living for 2 or 3 days before you sign contract is what i do its AMAZING advise and strongly suggested I always have a 14 day stay in before contract I pay the first month rent of course but that contract i ain't touching until that 2 week mark. The karoake is just F'n insanely disrespectful and annoying and the fact its all the time i feel this girl's pain. I lived in Lagi for 2 years before i came to Vung tau and it was ALL day every day all night all the time karoake........Lagi is a VERY small town with only a co op there. Yet i moved 7 differnet times while living there just beuacse of noise until i said "F*** this" and i left

Vung Tau is a party city, people from Saigon would travel to Vung Tau for a weekend getaway/party and they will get as much fun as they want (and fun would get some singing involved). Lagi is a lovely town, great street food, and seafood. Karaoke is not a bad thing, but how it is nowadays is just unacceptable.

@@seeyouinvietnam Yeah i lived in Lagi for almost 2 years, what Lagi is now is the same as Sapa is now, its just a loud dirty tourist city now. Its really sad to see these really calm and beautiful cities turn into hotel/Karoke over ran areas. Lagi was just unlivable, i was going to Phan Thiet almost weekly just to relax because being at home was just not relaxing no more :( Vung tau, yeah party city. I didn't really like it at all, i just moved up north from Vung tau about 40km, so far its been really good - but to be honet i do miss the north, but i hate the raining there ha ha

I'm not a vlogger but i used to watch youtube. i always watch videos about travel and tours. I don't see any wrong in what she said. Analyze her story well for you guys to understand what she meant. Shes's not attacking or down grading the country, this is based on her experienced as a first timer. Don't you understand why she keeps coming back in the Vietnam for 3 years now? As a Vietnamese I think it depends on whether that animal is a pet or just food source. My uncle has a dog. She lived full 15 years of her happy dog life. Everyday she walked around the village and if someone was having a party or something she would stay there and join in. Maybe tourists just see all the animals in the market (as I said, they are considered food source) or I just didn't know any case of badly treated pets.

It's hell for Animals everywhere. In western countries, they are cruel to Animals and kill them without any conscience too. Unlike Vietnam, western countries kill behind closed doors in slaughterhouses which are far far away from the cities. And the meat and dairy industries just lie and fool ppl by marketing their "products" as coming from happy cows, pigs, chickens, etc. Thus, the majority of ppl in the west thinks the meat/dairy they consume comes from happy Animals who were "humanely killed". Wake up, it's all lies so they can keep selling their products. Animals used and killed for food, clothing, entertainments (rodeos, racing, circus, etc), and experiments all live in hell created by humans at every corners of the globe. Please watch Earthlings and Dominions documentaries on KZbin to see what I mean.

I don’t think that it’s gonna be a problem for you to live in Vietnam . After a first few weeks feeling strange so things gonna settled down . I guess that you should try to live in Vietnam for half a year before take the decision that this gonna be where I’ll live for long term . you have to thank her. foreigners will not come to Vietnam anymore especially backpackers. they spend very little money and ask for a luxury place. if they don't come here you won't see them begging on the street or selling drugs to other foreigners and do illegal jobs on tourist visas. you don't need to explain.

Actually we’ve met many nice expats though, but a lot of them have just returned home due to visa restrictions. I agree staying in one country by extending a tourist visa is not great, but I don't know, maybe there should be some cross visa between tourist visas and work visa

The only regret was we didn't have time to explore some places in detail. We plan to travel with more family's members once Covid is over. Vietnam is pretty safe compare to most tourist destination such as Thailand, Rome ...

85% of Tourists don't return to Vietnam. Thailand has a 60% return rate. Everything she said in her video was valid and my Vietnamese friends say the same and are embarrassed by many of the things she said. Yes it is true people either love it or hate it that's why 85% won't come back!

In Vietnam, that's a different story, many people try to make the most out of it, even by cheating, scams just to get as much money as they could. With driving i find Vietnamese are some of the worst drivers i've seen globally next to India. I get some westerns will make some mistakes and crash. Sh** happens i know, but when you start counting out a western's dumb mistake versus a VNese mistake on driving the numbers quickly rise. To this day in 2021, it still confuses me why people are allowed to "BUY" a permit to drive instead of earning it, and allowing people to learn to properly drive. Also confsues me why police will sit at corners yet not enforce the driving rules thus making it more dangerous. Girl is right though, i saw 2019 Vietnam Min. web site stated 39% of deaths of people under 28 years old where from auto crashes and related.. That is a SERIOUSLY high number with no excuses. I will say, this is a big difference when you compare the north to the south, the north has a bit more order in regards to driving and Rules of the road, where the south is almost an all out zoo. And when you get near or in saigon you KNOW your in saigon simply by the driving and rampid honking. Just think 100k per person to EARN your permit to drive, 100.000 x 97 million = VN gov would make a HUGE amount of money plus make the streets much safer and a better review from westerns that come here and visit.

Never fun and easy riding scooters in Vietnam, btw, how do you get around Phan Thiet? We live in Da Nang which has a 1/8 of Saigon population but the streets are packed during rush hours. There's nothing called a quick fix for the traffic problem in Vietnam, I guess it must come down from the gov, the law needs to be enforced 1st, heavy fine, and I think things will get better anyway.

@@seeyouinvietnam Quick fix, i agree 100% not happening. Sadly the bad driving is in the culture and "Normal", the idea you can just buy a permit to drive is really the first problem. Me personally i have a D.L. to legally drive a motor bike, and last year i got a permit to drive a car, it cost me 350k and they just gave me it no test on paper, no driving test, That itself is a serius problem. In Phan Thiet, i get around in my sexy little Airblade - my favorite bike by far :)

Learn from your neighbor civilized Japanese, not the Korean or Chinese. @@seeyouinvietnam eating with bare hands like in India or Philippines can get one’s better sense of the food, and in the US we do eat like this at McDonald’s and KFC and we do lick our fingers. Vietnam outdoor fresh market is unorganized, bloody, filthy compare to those in Japan, Europe that have outdoor fresh market. You said dirty market in Vietnam is a cultural and that’s how you get fresh meat vs in the supermarket. One thing I can tell you baby, keeping the place clean is very simple, just need a will power to cleaning up your own mess like being taught in elementary school. Every country has pros and cons, but do admit that Vietnam is a dirty country with issues like: Spitting, urinating, dogs pooping and excessive honking, all in public. These can all be solved by knowing RESPECT to oneself and other...and of course with the LAW to enforce these unacceptable behavior. I want my motherland to be civilized like Japan, but sadly it will takes many decades be like them (my HIGHEST respect to Japanese and to their society). I came back to VN in 2007 and 2019, and I still witnessed these unsanitary behaviors. Are you still working on this easy fix in your society? Or giving more excuses to deny the truth?

@@tl749 Definitely through few words and a few minute video, I can not express all of my points throughly and that could lead to misunderstandings like you do, I’ve been to many fresh outdoor markets outside of Vietnam to understand, keeping the market fresh and outdoor and also clean and sanitized are equally important said is always easier than done. Definitely I want my home country where I am living now be a better place, people respect each others and a cleaner place. And I understand the power of the law, but it’s the thing you can not change now or in the near future except there’re more and more people are working together to raise the issues and yes, We do work with them and do our works as well, we don’t expect our country to be a better place without doing anything. Based on how you express your thoughts, I’m pretty sure you are living in a better place than Vietnam. I’ve been to countries where is better than Vietnam in someways and I have traveled to countries where are worse than Vietnam in someways, in those cases, we tried to understand, ask locals, do researches before giving any criticism about that countries. We don't know, we kinda half agree & half disagree. Yes, people in big cities seems to be a bit unfriendly to foreigners (not just in Vietnam but everywhere in the world), but the countryside people are contrast, they're so hospitable and very helpful. We think that living in the big cities are far more streesful than living in the countryside, so it could have a great impact to their way of living, the cultural behaviors and attitudes towards the foreigners. However, we sometimes take foreign friends into the slums of District 4 to see another side of Saigon. People are amazing and friendly there.
