Thanks David. I just had number two done. The confirmation of Leukemia put a real damper on the visit to the surgery. It took about 6 years to finally come to the real reason for multiple PE events that caused heart and lung damage along with severe osteoporosis. New tests now can be done that tell the story. Tests that were not available 6 years ago. 73, Jim W6LG....everything looks so bright!!!

The Times Microwave calculator reports that 100 feet of RG-8X cable exhibits 1.3 dB attenuation at 14 MHz. Of the 1500 peak watts of RF you put in, 1112 watts of RF came out the far end. The 1.3 dB power lost was 388 watts that heated the cable. Coiling the cable slowed the dissipation via air convection and radiant heat causing its temperature to rise rapidly.

Thanks so much, Jim, for the detail and effort present in your videos. My experience with coaxes are in line with yours (been around ham bands since about 1958). This means that I de-rate the published max power figures (to allow for the unknown and unexpected ... grin) and really do research to try and buy quality line. Admitting that when doing some past experiments, I have fried a few balun cores, etc. Guess this goes with the primary concept of ham operators ... "I don't know know if it will work, but I'm d_ _n sure gonna try it"???!!! (There is an interesting funny related to this subject, featuring a ham, an electronics technician, an engineer and a beautiful woman. Suspect you've heard it). Best wishes for your upcoming surgery. Had my cataracts done a few years back. Consider you a "friend" and reliable source of info. After all, I've been a "student" of your channel for years. Mike, N3JW

Hi Jim, Cataract surgery did wonders for me. Ended with 20/15 in left eye and 20/20 in the right. Lost my close focus capability and now need reading glasses for close up work like shaving. Check to see if they have lenses to preserve your close focus ability. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
@billmccullough7773 жыл бұрын
I would go for the reading glasses. People I have talked to who got bifocal lenses tell me that line between the lenses blooms when hit with bright light. There goes driving. I had a period between operations where I had one eye with close vision and the other far. Did not work at all for me. YMMV.

Hi Jim. I’ll be a ways behind you on the cataract surgery. I’m quite nearsighted. They tell me they can set my eyes for distance or close work with new corneas, or that some people choose one eye of each! That would drive me insane. I have a close friend who loves his new eyes. Piece of cake. Enjoyed the responses. It’ll be fun to see the Zoom video, a ham summit conference.

Hi, Three medical tests this week. Looks like some minor issues need to be fixed. Cataract surgery is scheduled but doctor says I am not a good candidate and I may not like the result. Gallbladder has to come out and soon. Antenna is working fine. I finished building another amp. Neighbors have stopped filing complaints. I have now talked to most of them. I have been able to work some DX friends. Noise level is s7 or more. With antenna down, I can't hear sh... There is too much noise. Solar panels are trouble and make lots of noise. How are you all doing? 73, Jim

Good to hear choke balun was brought up. May not be a big a coil as you did, but still will be coiled. And heating should be close to the same as completely coiled or just 10 turns. Also a good test because do run this in either conduit or in house walls. This means it would be surrounded by about the same amount of insulation as your completely coiled test.
@smithderf Жыл бұрын
A coil of any conductor that carries high current will heat up much more than a straight run of the same conductor. All one has to do is take 100 foot of heavy duty extension cord and run one high power device. You'll find, and I have personally found that the plastic insulation on the cord will start to melt in the coil, but the straight run portion of the extension cord will be fine.

It’s ok to use rg8x for jumpers on the input.side of the amp…..just to be clear for newer hams…..
@christophernetherton93893 жыл бұрын
The internal wire gauge for RG8X was mentioned as being capable of carrying 5 amps. At RF, however, how much of the cross-section of the conductor is actually carrying the current (skin effect)? I would have thought that this would have reduced the current carrying capability as well as causing heating near the surface of the conductor. Not an expert in these matters, and am curious to hear your thoughts. Thank you for the experiment and especially this response video!

The coiled up coax is not being ventilated like in normal use that can cause more of a heat problem. If you are investing the money for a 1500 watt amp buy the LMR400 why even take the chance on damaging the amp and also the added loss would deplete some of the wattage also. 73s KC0ELC Walt

Firstly best wishes with the eye op, your welfare is more important than me melting coaxial cable. Regarding the coil of coax it should not produce a field around it but the air movement will be slightly reduced. But it is debatable how much that will affect things. In relative terms you were being easy on the cable, a matched load and SSB duty cycle, in real use that cable will be in big trouble. In my fairly typical Radio-Amplifier-Meter-Tuner set up I want to use small cable, the power meter will over balance with the weight of RG213 patch leads. The solution is my patch leads in the shack are relatively small PTFE insulated coax. (Run within ratings). Probably the most important take away from the previous video is that even under ideal conditions RG8X is not going to survive 1500w. Even at the UK limit the cable will be in trouble with a modest SWR. FWIW LMR400 is banned from some radio sites due to IMD issues, I have no idea if the effects are significant in our applications....

RG8X Coax heats up because its lossy and losses generate heat ! the higher the frequency the higher the losses the higher the heat ! I don't recomend running 1500 watts into RG8x at any frequency period.

sorry your credibility flew right out the window when you say... the coiling of the coax made NO difference..... surely you know better than that!!!
@onemarktwoyou Жыл бұрын
RG8X is horrible!!!!! The question isn't if it is the worse, it isn't. It is unacceptable. It has a high resistive loss at higher frequencies aka attenuation (VF .66). The worse part, it is generally cut at 50 foot, just about the worse length. It is close to 1/4 or 3/4 wave coax length for most HF ham bands. If it was cut around 89 feet, then I would go with it is okay up to 500 watts. NOT on my radios. For twice the price I can get good coax or at least something far superior. I wouldn't even use it for jumpers, which it would probably be okay for, but not on my equipment. ANY ONE who says they run 1500 watts on it and runs it hard is a complete LIAR!!!! Not even with a well tuned antenna would that work with the coax cut to half wave length, and that especially goes when broadcasting on other bands which the antenna isn't well tuned for, including using a good antenna tuner, because it still runs higher current in the coax.
