For lanyards, I bought myself two leather lanyards: one brown and one black. I replaced the company issue blue lanyard and placed my ID card in it. They make me look more professional.

Ah yes, the Safari Jacket, it shares a place on my list of potential casual jackets with the Norfolk Shooting Jacket and the Teba Jacket - it's the easiest to get, so I'm more inclined to jump though a ton of loops to get a more difficult one in acquisition since I'm apparently somewhat masochistic... 🤣 I never go uncovered ankle, I kind of get it for summer shoes but I *personally* dislike it substantially, but if worn I'd say even the loafer is a step to far into the direction of formal, though It'd work probably nicely with a boat shoe. If you have the means, or find a good rental, go with Morning Dress! It looks *stunning* on really any man, I've worn it for a Wedding a couple of years ago and it adds so much panache to your appearance - love it! But I dress as if it's 1923 instead of 2023 anyway😅. Don't have all that much to say about the other questions except: *of course* go with a bespoke suit if you have the means!^^ Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

I find the safari jacket quite nice depending on material and construction. I am _very_ picky about drape. I purchased one from Spier and Mackay in a nice jersey knit navy herringbone cotton that I have had the quarters rounded and it looks great. I think darker colours look more chic, though.

Keeping calorie intake at a level that stabilizes and manages weight is no easy task. But…. It must be combined with daily..yes daily exercise. Im 67 and I work out in the gym for 90 mins every day, weigh twice a day…A great result.

In regards to your advise on reading, some fiction is a mix and has a good bit of non-fiction included. What comes to mind is the Kingsbridge series by Ken Follett. The history of England is presented in a very entertaining way, much of it factual.

I was looking for a safari jacket for summer since 2020. Suitsupply has some in linnen but they are to long for me. By chance I found one on sale from Ralph Lauren. Made from a very light cotton fabric in mid brown. The length is perfect and you can trow it in the washing machine! The other jackets in my summer rotation are a blue Harrington jacket and two linnen sports coats (one in green and one in brown with a Prince of Wales check) 😎 Greetings from Belgium, Roland 🇧🇪

Hi Chaps. Nowadays having printed lanyard is considered as security risk. The reason is, once somebody lose it the founder knows where to go, which doors can be opened. So, the most of the companies, which are using this type of ID are moving towards unprinted version of ID card as well as the string attached. Using printed lanyard is like having address on keys or PIN on payment card. So, if you are bothered by the visual of your ID, try to approach your company's security officer. Maybe you'll find an ally…

I concur with your thoughts on bare ankles and formalwear. I do love the bare ankle in a casual setting. Especially here in Arizona where we can go weeks at 110 degrees. Last summer we broke 120. It's quite difficult to dress well here in summer. I plan on sporting linen, linen, and more linen with my panama hat and boat shoes for most of the summer. I truly envy you when I see you sitting in the cool wind in your tweed.

I am 62. 5'10" . I was 95 kg but I am now 72kg and taking advice from Ash re clothing(on a budget). I can guarantee that the carnivore diet works AND is very healthy. I run 4miles 5x a week, cycle at least 6 miles 5x a week and swim for an hour 3 x a week. All since starting the carnivore diet as you have more energy. My clothes look better now without the chins and beer belly!!

Dear Ash, Some thoughts of mine in the chronological order of the episode. # fully agree and very appreciate you standing up to the opinion: no socks is almost always a no-go! Nowadays many tend to believe, their bare ankles would be of great interest for the society, but they are not! # really liked your appearance in the morning dress, but one detail immediately struck my eyes : the rugged sporty tool watch you were wearing is IMHO a formality clash and doesn't looks right at all. I believe a (golden) pocket watch on a chain would be the best choice. If one can not resist going for a wrist watch, then probably a slim (golden) watch w/o complications (a "dress watch" how they call it nowadays) on a black leather strap. But a sort of sporty Rolex you displayed is probably better suitable for a usual suit or less formal attire. # alternatives to Explorer I : I'm surprized you didn't recommend the company Smiths from UK, esp. models EVEREST and COMMANDO. Great episode as usual!

I recently bought black and brown leather ID card holders on Amazon for exactly the problem described! I am pleased to know other gents dislike lanyards as well. I've paired mine with a silver retractable clip (worn on my belt), which allows me to compliment my metals. Brass and rose gold ones are also available chaps!

The spring-loaded retractable device for i.d.s can also be pinned to your jacket. In the US, a ball chain is more frequent. Great video.

Boots: I suggest Whites, Nicks, Red Wing. I tend to prefer smooth leather but they can be had with rough-out leather as well. They do tend toward working boots.

67 yr old in Alabama here. For me the no show sock bare ankle thing becoming an acceptable is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Its hot here. Agree the bare ankle and more formal shoes doesn't really work. But for loafers, boat shoes, or the ubiquitous white sneaker its a godsend. With a pair of chinos its air conditioning. I would even pull on an unlined sport coat and not think twice.

Considering your background in law enforcement I'm very surprised that you suggested the retractable lanyard as they are far easier to be lifted by a pick pocket than one around the neck.

Whilst picking out a suit for my father's funeral in Slaters I was also told that they also have started to offer Made to Measure but only in their Glasgow and Manchester stores for now. For a bit extra money I am thinking it would be a better investment and would save a trip to the tailors for a nip and tuck. Im a awkward size.

This might not be your cup of tea but due to my lifestyle I want to minimize animal products as much as possible. Do you have recommendations for shoes, belts, watch straps etc? I do like the leather look but open to any suggestions. Thanks! :)

Option One: Zero Animal Products There is such a thing as vegan leather. While its standards are inarguably below that of actual leather, it will do alright as a formal substitute. Some brands offer so-called "luxury" vegan leather, but it will be sub-par to even mediocre real leather. However, if this is the way your morals point you, then there's no judgement in that. You might also look at patent leather, including opera pumps; some patent leather is made with zero actual leather. With that said, I would still recommend wearing wool - cotton is for summer, and synthetics are too far outside of classic menswear. (Please note that tweed is made of wool.) Option Two: Minimizing Animal Cruelty If you're alright with wearing animal products but uncomfortable with directly supporting the industry, shop second-hand. Second-hand leather and fur goods give a second life to an animal product without directly harming animals. I, for one, wear fur goods, but I would only do so with vintage furs rather than new. I also take comfort in buying most of my leather goods second-hand, as it's great for both the wallet and moral compass. Buying second-hand animal goods makes sure the deceased animal doesn't go to waste while allowing you to enjoy true classic menswear - and at a cheaper price, at that. Option Three: Animal Utilitarianism For this option, consider which animals are more affected by being used for goods. For example, mink and ivory are both the hunting of endangered animals, and are thus (in my opinion) only acceptable for second-hand purchases. Beavers, meanwhile, are an invasive species causing damage to ecosystems in some areas. One could argue by this logic that beaver-fur felt is acceptable, but an ivory-handle cane isn't. Where do our bovine friends sit? Somewhere in the middle. Some, like me, would argue that it's better to experience a comfortable (non-battery-farming) life and die painlessly and early than to not experience life at all - and hence I'm comfortable with cow goods. You, meanwhile, might not share those views, which is perfectly fine. This utilitarian outlook is just an adjustable-to-yourself option.

A superb response from The Modern Dandy, which covers my own ideology almost entirely. I would also suggest vegan leather if this is your ethical objection to leather goods - but perhaps being more precise as to your buying methods may yield a better outcome for the animals concerned - i.e. buy only from countries where animal welfare is considered paramount (UK, Europe, etc.) and actively avoid nations where the rights of animals are not considered. I would value further dialogue on this topic, as I'm sure many of us share views which align with the best possible animal welfare standards.

On top of the *excellent* reply from TheModernDandy I'd also add that in regards to shoes you'd have to go "The Ash-route" because you have to be a tad bit careful (if you even consider the utilitarian route a viable option for you) with even the most up-to-lower-medium-priced European Shoe producers (and I'll be so free to consider this as a catch-all designator, not just the EU) might well have sourced the leather from unethical sources and assembled in Europe. If you want to be sure about ethical leather you'd have to go bespoke or expensive (as if *bespoke* wasn't...) items in used condition. However once you have a used pair, having it repaired or leather soles exchanged and the like is fairly safe with companies like JR sourcing their leathers from well and morally sound kept animals, back then (early 2010s I think) it was mostly from Southern Germany, Austria and Slovenia (I had a conversation with the lady who did the scouting of potential suppliers). And even "aggregate" suppliers like Euro-Depot only carry leather items from suppliers that rely on morally sound suppliers - the basic reason here is that if you use leather from horribly kept animals it *will* be damaged ( *at least* fly-bite damages which are already bad enough) and mostly unusable or only usable in, pardon the expression, BS-shoes and thus a greater monetary loss than taking care to only buy "morally sound leather". If you have ever seen a shoe made from lacquered flesh-split leather you know what I mean... excuse the emoticon but =>🤮 Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Smiths Everest PRS-25 would be a good choice too. They drop a batch now and then. You have to be fast though because they always sell out fast. Customer service does not have the best reputation but I don’t own one so that is just rumors.

Great advice, as always, Ash! Safari jackets? No. There are much better alternatives that won't make you look foolish. If you need to carry a bunch of gear with you, get a backpack, a messenger bag, or a briefcase. If it's going to be rainy or cold, get a jacket that provides appropriate protection. Never go out in public dressed like you walked off the set of a cheesy action movie. Anyone remember the powder blue terrycloth onesie Sean Connery wore in Goldfinger? James Bond might be a style icon - but he certainly ain't an infallible one. Lanyards? If your job or employer requires one for security or other reasons, there should be no shame whatsoever attached to wearing one. Safety glasses and hard hats don't make a machinist or construction worker look bad. Quite the opposite. Garments or accessories worn in the interests of safety and security are the epitome of function. And there is no better definition of appropriate clothing than that.

I am South African, 77, proudly Boer. Safari suits here went out in the 80,s. I used to wear them daily. Today only the few surviving White Farmers, who have not yet been killed by the Blacks, seem to wear them. And I have to laugh at the tourists from the UK, and all over the world, who all seem to want to be The Great White Hunter, when visiting the Kruger Park, and South Africa.
