@@johnwriter8234 agreed. Stevie practiced his ass off, played in different bands for little to no money, and grew his talent innately and through stone cold hard frigging work. Something that seems to be in short supply today.

I passed on an opportunity to see him live the night he died. The Alpine Valley music theater was only a 45 minute drive from where I lived. I didn't like big crowds and just thought there would be a future time in a smaller venue.... A regret....😢

I was going to see Ray Charles at a Seattle Festival and SRV was first act. We had no clue who he was. We were blown away by his talent as well as his band. Ray Charles stood in the wings dancing and loving how Stevie made his guitar sing so beautifully. He crowd went wild! We paid $7.50 to see them. We bought tickets to his upcoming tour but sadly he passed before could. RIP SWEET SRV

I saw him at NY State Fair in 1986- an outdoor gig and a whole huge summer storm blew through during his gig. They paused the gig for a bit and a lot of the crowd left-we stayed! Best decision I ever made. Despite the rain and wind SRV came back out in his huge Native American head dress. We got right to the edge of the stage. Sounds weird, but I touched his boot as he blew through Testify. I just wanted to check to see if this cat was REAL! The sheer volume rattled my lungs! The playing- because they wanted him off the stage- was even faster than the album and spot on! 35 years later it still gets me emotional!

Stevie Ray's playing is just nasty sweet. Playing behind your back and not missing a beat is a WTF moment. I love the look on your faces. You can't believe what you are seeing but you know it's once-in-a-liftetime greatness. Notice you guys weren't saying anything during that period, just like the audience. That's why they were quiet; don't ruin a wow moment. Actually, the crowd was probably quiet for several reasons - they were likely told the concert/song was being recorded, they were in awe and they/we are Canadian, very respectful.

SRV was one who channeled the music. And Double Trouble is one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time. Both very accomplished musicians. They later added a keyboard player who fit right in. Thank you for paying homage to one of the greatest players of all time. As a Torontonian we were lucky enough to have him play at the El Mocambo. Famous venue for musicians. Another tragic end to a gifted musician. I wish music could be how it was back then, heart and soul. Today's music is auto tuned crap written by 10 song writers in a board room in Nashville.

You mentioned the whammy bar.... The actual name of it is a vibrato bar. In the 50's a musician named Lonnie Mack wrote a song called Wham in which he used the vibrato bar almost non-stop and from that point on it became known as a Whammy Bar Lonnie Mack was a huge influence on Stevie. They even got together to play Wham and called it Double Whammy with both of them playing together

Well guys, that wasn't sweat...that was straight up Crown & coke (the powdered kind) oozing out of his pores! He used to spike his Crown w/ coke & then he could take it up on stage w/ him & it would look like he was just having a drink. Obviously, he was a very hi functioning addict. Was so proud of him when he got sober in 1987. (Don't know what ur reading from but he has said repeatedly that he got sober in '87 & I know that to be true. He was a friend of mine.) I haven't seen too many requests in the comments so I'll offer a few: Life Without You (at Capitol Theater), VooDoo Chile (Austin City Limits), Mary Had a Little Lamb (Austin City Limits), Riviera Paradise (Austin City Limits....Reese is killer on keys on those last 2!!), Pride & Joy (at Montreax). Tip: Always, always choose the live versions w/SRV...& don't blink or you'll miss something!! RIP Stevie, the Goat, then & always♡

The music of my youth! Like with Mozart, God & SRV already had written the music . . . he just had to open the valve to let it roll-out and flow-out to the rest of us. Quite possibly, the finest guitar that has ever strapped it up (I think so!) Try Riviera Paradise (Live in Austin, TX,) Pride and Joy, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Voodoo Child, etc. -- The list goes on, like his talent . . . endless in depth, skill, and heart. The Good Lord wanted to hear the Blues . . . Stevie left us in Aug. 1990 (helicopter crash after a gig.) PS: His "music" teacher in grade school failed him!

So, I'm from that "older generation", and we just grew up with some amazing music, from multiple bands. All unique. All very talented. The 70's had the best bands, some carried into the 80's. Truly, we took it for granted, just accepting great music as the norm. Today, it feels like many musicians are just lazy. Creativity is lacking. They often copy each other and sound the same. They want to lip sync songs that are boring to begin with. Too many are more interested about being vulgar in front of the camera and rolling around on the floor, than trying to put out some good music. When they do perform live, it's usually a disaster and embarrassment. It's not a wonder that so many young are on here today, in amazement of what good music was. The 70's were amazing, with some carrying over into the 80's. . . .And then came GRUNGE, and another amazing era of music. Sadly, many of them are dead now. smh
