Don't be fooled by the "little microphone". It is a condenser microphone, which generally has better sound than the typical "dynamic microphones" commonly used on stage today. Dynamic mics existed back in the day too and were used in concert performances. But for TV performances, condenser mics were usually the choice because of their better sound quality. They aren't as rugged as dynamic mics so you wouldn't want to do any "mic drops" with them, but their sound is superior.

Now, if you were impressed by Bobby's "surprising" vocals - treat yourself to his live performance of "Unchained Melody" (a HUGE hit for them) - it's still considered one of the best live vocal performances ever. And if you want to talk about range, Bobby had like a 4-ocatave range, if I'm not mistaken. Hope you react to it.
@zanhar76882 күн бұрын
They were opposite ranges... Bill is bass-baritone and has a three octave range. Bobby is a counter tenor with a 3.5 octave range. This has been over-dubbed but they were actually singing live. My mom said they were huge back in the day and I believe it! And Daryl Hall and John Oates did a cover of this song when I was growing up in the 80s - and it was a big deal at that time. They killed it though and yes, they had a lot of hits but you have to watch Unchained Melody - a true classic and Bobby’s voice and range is incredible!
@mary-y8x8h2 күн бұрын
The way that these two sing in their beautifully tailored, pitched voices is to die for, however when lower voiced Bill Medley launches himself for the the higher ranges of his voice, and higher voiced Bobbie Hatfield swoops downwards, they completely change the direction and emotional impact of this gorgeous song. And it is wonderful. Always, always one of my absolute favourites. Secondly, you talked in your video about studio production and there is no problem recognizing the signature style of what Ryan (I think) calls the musical landscape. It's Phil Spectre's famous wall of sound.

Bobby Hatfield the tenor has died but Bill Medley still alive and is still performing
@douganderson40302 күн бұрын
To my knowledge, Bill Medley (the baritone) is still performing at the age of 84 performing with Bucky Heard since he re-formed the Righteous Brothers in 2016. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield (the tenor) passed away back in 2003. You may have heard them if you saw the movie "Ghost" when the song "Unchained Melody " was featured. Also, Bill Medley performed the song "The Time of my Life" with Jennifer Warnes in the film "Dirty Dancing".

The most played song in the 20th century! I echo the below viewers; “unchained melody” which I think is the greatest live performance by a singer that I’ve ever seen. Early audiences did not know their “make up“ until they actually came out on stage so you can imagine their confusion, as they often played on the same card with the four tops and other Motown groups! By the way, another live suggestion. He is a very short version of “you’ll never walk alone“ on, I believe the Ed Sullivan show, which to me is the greatest rendition of this World War II classic.

Their "I Just Want to Make Love To You" is the best example of blue-eyed soul!

Considered one of the greatest pop singles of all time. The Righteous Brothers literally were the vocal act that the term and genre "blue-eyed soul" was coined for and about. They are the Godfathers. In the grander scheme of things, I wonder whether it was fate, karma, kismet, or divine providence that brought together two such impeccable, soulful singers, from opposite ends of the vocal spectrum. Bobby Hatfield, the high tenor, will lay you flat with his version of "Unchained Melody". It's been a much-covered song, but he gives the most amazing, ultimate performance.

I thought you're gonna speak about the music a little. I mean the quality isn't perfect as it's an old record but imagine listening to this in HD. Cause the bass quality and the small noise/hum in the background could have been removed (I bet there's a different version on YT). Although, apart from everything, their vocal performance has a stamp of timeless greatness. The love songs had a class back then, were romantic, subtle, sweet and beautiful. I thought the women are going to sing towards the end of the song. :) Like a choir or big backing vocals. Now THAT would have been even better. :) All in all it's an exceptional song and performance. I've heard other songs from this duo and not this one I think. Nick is so dang right, this music mustn't be forgotten and we have to cherish it by passing onto younger generation.

….. from BMI ……. Various music writers have described the Righteous Brothers version as "one of the best records ever made" and "the ultimate pop record".[1] In 1999 the performing-rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) ranked the song as the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century, having accumulated more than 8 million airplays by 1999,[4] and nearly 15 million by 2011.[5] It held the distinction of being the most-played song for 22 years until 2019, ………… it’s a product of Phil specter’s “wall of sound generation”

That massive baseball bat to the face background orchestration music was called "The Wall of Sound" and it was the signature sound of a recording produced by Phil Spector who was convicted of second degree murder and died in a California prison in 2019.
@davemuench727219 сағат бұрын
What a strange man Phil Spector was for sure, in just about any regard. The "Wall of Sound" was the start of a lot of careers and a lot of famous music. They say he hated stereo and thought his way of creating music shouldn't be tampered with. It was very costly and complicated to produce, but it is unmistakable all these decades later. The "Wrecking Crew" did a lot of work with Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Just a couple of bits of trivia you might enjoy.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) was an American singer. He and Bill Medley were the Righteous Brothers. He sang the tenor part for the duo and sang solo on the group's 1965 recording of "Unchained Melody". Hatfield died at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan, on November 5, 2003. He was found by Bill Medley and the Righteous Brothers' road manager Dusty Hanvey. A security guard let them into Hatfield's room after he had failed to show up at the concert venue when expected. He apparently died in his sleep, hours before a scheduled Righteous Brothers concert. In January 2004, a toxicology report concluded that cocaine use had precipitated a fatal heart attack. The initial autopsy found that Hatfield had advanced coronary disease. The medical examiner stated that "in this case, there was already a significant amount of blockage in the coronary arteries."
