Also, a better way to move a file is to yank it with yy, move to the directory you want to move the file to, and then either a lowercase p to copy, or an uppercase P to move. That lets you get past deleting the file first and getting that confirmation box.

I really love vifm! But I've only learned maybe a half a percent of its features and options. There's a LOT, and the documentation is massive. One thing I really like about it is the ability to batch rename files. Just mark them with t (or v and then a j or a k), launch :rename, and now you have the full power of vim to manipulate those filenames with visual mode or regex. :wq when you're done, and that's it! If you like file managers with miller columns, you can achieve that in vifm with :set millerview. Turn it off again with nomillerview. It's such a good file manager! If it had support for image thumbnails like gui managers, I'd use it for almost literally everything.

I have been using vifm for a few weeks and I really like it. I usually have the file preview in the second pane instead of the second dir (toggle with w key). I also often type f and a letter to go to the first file/dir that starts with that letter. And I have set a lot of marks for dirs so I can quickly jump between them (set mark with m+letter and go there with '+letter)

I recently started using it and I love it. Also adding icons manually is not hard. This is how I did it. First install nerd fonts and go to their cheatshheat webpage and then copy paste the icons in your vifmrc. Use set classify ='icon :filetype:' and don't forget to add two colons when using pattern matching like this set classify='icon ::*.jpg::" this will show whatever icon you set on all .jpg files and use comma separated values to add multiple icons for everything else like this. For more info on this look for set options in man page or the online documentation.

I recently discovered this and absolutely love it even more than lf and ranger once I got used to some of the bindings

Not sure if you're into Emacs or not, but dirvish is an awesome dired enhancement that might be up your alley for a review... That asterisk notation looks similar to dired when you 'mark' a file. You can then do operations in bulk on the marked file(s) afterwards. Don't know if that's what is going on here with vifm though. Thanks for the review - I'll check this out.

You can set icons with the Lua plugin. Lua support is a nice addition.

I also like file managers and also using krusader with custom patches. However, I still miss Directory Opus from the Windows days, it's the most OP file manager ever created.

There's one on Mac, I don't remember the name, but I pad $100 for it. It allowed you to have like seven panels open at once and a terminal. It was awesome.

@Vaisakh K M No drivers for my device on linux, but I'm tempted 😅 and I have cool ideas on my manipulations for windows directories. I might test out on linux dual boot, because other windows is old and i don't want to remove that one.

Dual pane tui file managers are obsolete because it takes space and you not even doing something in the second directory while in first. Midnight commander has option to have some pretty good stuff on the second pane but then I miss the option to have multiple directories open. I think the best modern option are ranger and nnn.

The second pane is your target folder or can be used for preview, help, tree view. Vifm is the best.
