I'm Catalan and we do this and we also do Santa we do bouth usualy, "caga tió" it's how it's called in catalan but I think Vigo has the translation wrong becouse he translated TIO (in spanish) that means uncle but in catalan that is a diferent lenguage from spanish TIÓ means a wood log so no Uncle crapper, more like crapper log. Very nice too see our traditions explained from Aragorn.

I work for a Catalan company (I'm from Brazil) and whenever the people talk about El Caga Tió they make it pretty clear that is a piece of wood, not an uncle. Btw, I think it makes more sense this tradition because it teaches the kids that if they take care of something they'll be rewarded (instead of a unknown old man giving presents).

As a Catalan I feel the need to explain what is the TIÓ. As Vigo said it’s a wood, but traditionally we only use the trunk part (and it had to be from an old tree). This was a way of explaining to the children that if you work your land it’s going to give you something in return (we need to remember it’s a traditon created before any industialitzation, so everybody lived form what they could cultivate. And nowadays the kids find presents under the trunk but originaly they would had found food, something especial for christmas night.

The only mistake here is Viggo translates wrong the word "tio". "Tio" in Spanish it means "Uncle" but in Catalan it means "Trunk". So we make a kind of smile face with a part of a tree trunk, like Viggo said and we sing a song before can get the presents.

Bit of a misunderstanding here... _"tio"_ means uncle, yes (well, it's in fact a bit of a castilianism - though a very spread one -, _"oncle"_ being the _proper_ word for uncle in Catalan)... but _"tió"_ means log, specifically for burning in a fireplace or similar home fire (the pronunciation is different, too: the first one is stressed on the i, which in the Catalan spoken in Barcelona and eastern Catalonia also means that the 'o' is actually pronounced '/u/', unlike in Spanish / Castilian... while the second one - the one Viggo's mistakenly talking about - is stressed on the o)... so no, we're not actually pretending to hit our uncles with sticks. :'D (The crapping thing is _completely_ true, though... we're a bit of a scatological people, apparently, and you might have heard of the _"caganer"_ - literally: crapper -, a shitting - no, not a typo - figure we traditionally put somewhere in our nativity scenes... originally just representing a peasant, but more modernly representing all kinds of famous people, especially politicians... we also have the same word for court and pigsty, after all.) :D

What a lively explanation, thank you very much. As Mr Mortensen said, this tradition is considered to be pre-Christian and is related to the cycles of renewal in nature. There's just one tiny but significant mistake: Mr Mortensen, who is a very fluent speaker of Spanish and whose Catalan is pretty good, got the name of our Christmas log wrong: he mixed up the Spanish 'tío', which translates into English as 'uncle', with the Catalan 'tió', which translates as 'log'. So as children we don't beat our 'uncle' but our beloved Christmas log. And I must say that, in my experience kids are not allowed to swear

It has already been pointed out: TIÓ in Catalan does NOT mean ‘uncle’, it means LOG. ‘Uncle’ in Catalan is ‘Oncle’. Mr Mortensen thought that ‘Tió’ meant ‘Uncle’ because ‘Uncle’ in Spanish is ‘Tio’. It could happen to anyone. Still, Mr Mortensen is a great advocate of the Catalans right to choose their own political future in a legally binding referendum of independence. We are still working on that, despite Spanish oppression and lack of democratic liberties.

Some other fellow Catalans have said it already. The translation of "tió" is not "uncle", my dear Viggo, but "log". Ariadna should have taught you better! It's a pagan tradition, which survived the christianization of the territory and has lived on to these days. I find it so special and it's one of the things that really make Christmas different. Playing the violin. Now oxen and cows pass by, hens with shoes and the roosters with big shoes Marieta makes nougat. The priest has tasted them he says they are a little salty. Marieta, put some sugar in them and they will be a little better. Poop log, otherwise I'll beat you with a stick. Ara passen bous i vaques les gallines amb sabates i els capons amb sabatons Marieta fa torrons. El vicari els ha tastats diu que són un poc salats. Marieta posa-hi sucre que seràn un poc millor. Sorry Viggo, but a clarification is needed. This catalan Christmas tradition has nothing to do with an "uncle". In spanish language "tio" means uncle, but in catalan language "tió" , with accent, means piece of strain or heavy branch, especially the one destined to be burned

He lives in Madrid with his partner. She is Catalan, and there they celebrate that tradition. By the way, "tió" in Catalan is not uncle. I think he makes a mess with the word "tio" (without accent) in Spanish that is translated as uncle in English. A more exact translation of "tió" would be "trunk" ... That is "Trunk Crapper".

It's a funny way to explain this Catalan tradition. It's 100 % true, but the translation: it's a log not an uncle!

This tradition is not only from Catalonia. It's celebrated as well in Aragon. And the translation given by Viggo is wrong. He should have translated it like "log" and not as "uncle". There is no any uncle in this Christmas tradition.

Wouldn't they risk of destroying the presents if they beat the blanket that covers them with some stick?
@mbpoblet
@mbpoblet 5 жыл бұрын
That's something to be careful of, yes... :D There's always adults around, though, obviously, and we usually put the presents _behind_ the log, covering them and its back with a blanket or rug, and direct the kids to aim at the log, not at the covered pile behind it... or, alternatively, the kids have to go dip the stick in some water - conveniently situated in another room - before hitting it, which gives the family some time to put _one_ single present under there without the kids noticing (or admitting they notice); of course this has to be repeated for every single present, making the fun last longer... though not for the log, obviously. :D What really sold it for me when I was a kid, though, was that the log _actually ate the cookies!_ ;) ... turns out that the family dog was well behaved enough (seriously, that was a _very_ good dog) that he knew to wait until I wasn't looking... :'D

You don't actually "beat" the log, just tap it with the stick while you sing the Tió song asking it to poop nougats and oranges. :)

@@jencallahan2233 They're kids. With sticks. Things _will_ get beaten (as, in fact, shown in the video you linked... that girl with the white shirt and blue pants _really_ wanted some presents...). :D (That _tió_ with the tongue out is _utterly terrifying,_ by the way...) Thankfully kids aren't usually very strong (though they can be stronger than they look)... they aren't very good at _aiming_ either, though, or at self-control... so better keep an eye on them while they've got the stick in their hands, just in case. :D

It was actually imported to America from Spain, but it was originally some kind of pottery (usually a cauldron or pot) filled with treats. In fact it was way more popular in Catalonia than in the rest of Spain tho. But anyway, the Iberia peninsula is belived to have gotten it from italy, which might probably had it imported from China, where they would break animal snapped pottery filled with seeds and decorated with colourful papers and other stuff to attract good harvesting for the following year. So it doesn't have the same originary country, but it definitely was exported from the same one at some point.
