What’s amazing about this show, is that you are hearing history from the people who were there, not in a book years later when it’s been diluted or stained due to someone else bias or views. There are only a few who are doing this, and as a history lover myself, it’s much appreciated. Not only that, it’s things that people need to hear. What’s really going on. Speaking from personal experience, and this is not a knock on any other unit or individual, but Green Berets are always some of the smartest dudes in any room they stand in anywhere on the planet. Twenty years ago, to even attempt to be an 18X you needed an 88 on the ASVAB with a language test score in the top 25%, get vetted for a top secret clearance, pass a basic psych evaluation & a perfect on at least 2/3 Pt test categories at the time: push-up, sit-up, run. That’s simply to qualify for the contract. Not many other SOF units at the time if any had such high standards, specifically educational standards. When I got to basic training I was put into one of the few 18X & RIP only contract units. There were approximately 150 across 3 platoons. We went to basic, AIT & jump school together. 50% already had a bachelors degree (& didn’t go to OCS), 25% with some college & the rest were smart, but generally 17-18 going to RIP who didn’t get the opportunity to yet seek higher education. Can only think of a handful of people who washed out or failed anything prior to SOPC-1 or SFAS, because of intelligence, failing pen & paper tests, etc. When people started to drop like flies it was more often an injury, private matter or poor land navigation skills. Green Berets are a different breed. Door stomping looks cool and gets all the attention, but it requires a different breed of soldier to calmly walk into a room in a foreign country often behind enemy lines to convince basically a total stranger to trust you with their lives and vice versa.
@jamesdean3474 Жыл бұрын
When I went to selection in 94, minimum GT score had to be 110. The SF community took the Q- Course Star land navigation test and inserted it into SF Selection, which weeded out a lot good soldiers.
@creaturesofqueens Жыл бұрын
@@jamesdean3474 In 03-04 same thing. Believe it was an 88 on the ASVAB, 110 GT and high placement on the language test. The language test is a trip. It’s all based on a fake language that you need to recognize patterns. The test administrator left the room confident no one would try to cheat. At one point everyone looked around and asked each other wtf is going with these language rules. I did my best and somehow qualified for all languages and they wanted me to learn either Urdu, Russian &/or Chinese. Those academic benchmarks just get you in the door.

I was in Afghanistan with the 82nd in 19-20 and got a tbi from a vbied that changed my life forever. I was in tears from this book multiple times. The conflicted feeling of the boys doing what we do to save who we can and the government just giving up and the public not giving a damn leaves me with the feeling of “what was this all for?”
@roninkraut68732 жыл бұрын
The public gives a damn. A lot of them have been mislead into thinking a certain way. The majority of the country knows we were there for a real reason and we were on the side of righteousness. I feel ya man, sucks thinking of the men/women we lost. Service members hit with catastrophic hits, or burned alive. Suicides left and right. My first NCO that took me over as a PVT, suicide with two little kids to grow up without her. They may see this on the news in the future and their mother fought to keep them safe. Civilians hurt or killed, victims of the conflict. Friends have TBI before it became recognized, suicides, domestic violence etc all while the NFL gets a movie on CTE. Changed their lives and their families lives forever. We get to live with it for the rest of our lives. I was totally burnt out from war, and believed the conflict drained us as a nation. Many of us were messaged by old Afghan friends, interpreters during the pull out, asking for help. Becoming friends on Facebook, watching each others families grow from across the world after relationships built over previous deployments and they were abandoned. The thought of something happening to send my kids back to a conflict I served in over 14 years is a let down. My oldest is now an adult, my kids could face this later. All for absolutely nothing. The ones making the decisions don't have the thoughts or memories of that battlefield. Mentally takes a toll on you.

The recent interview with the Marine Sergeant led me to this interview because I saw Lt. Col. Scott Mann in that video when they showed his testimony. Incredible and thought provoking and in many cases, quite sad as to what has happened. Thank you, Shawn Ryan, for all of this. Wishing you all the best in the future, you are doing...such good work it's incredible.

Man when he talks about how we chopped their legs out from under them you can tell he really meant it from the deepest crevices of his soul. Made me tear up

One of my favorite interviews yet. Your style is unique. You ask gray questions and let the guest open up. Amazing story perspective on what happened and why and what will happen.

Shawn.. the quality of these sit downs is absolutely incredible. What stories keep coming forth are absolutely nothing short of amazing. To everyone who makes these happen I send my deepest and sincere Thanks! Stay safe and be well.

After listening to this whole interview and seeing how things are going in the world, there really doesn't feel like there's much hope if (or when) something happens, like Scott was saying at the end. There's dark times coming and we're really not prepared for it.

Great interview. Lt Col seems about as genuine and sincere as they come. Probably why he had such a positive impact on the people he came in contact with.

Another one for the books! Such a great insightful interview Shawn. I hope Americans are waking up to the nonsense, especially with our current administration and how it passes the buck literally... Thank you, Ret. Lt. Col. Scott Mann, for 20+ years of service and for helping with the utter debacle in Afghanistan. Thank you, Shawn, for hosting these. You have hit gold in my eyes, and I appreciate the effort you've put into it. Cheers🍺

Shawn and Sott: This is the most profound discussion I have heard by two veterans who have been there and done that. While the whole thing is excellent, the last fifteen minutes or so are the best. It gives a clear picture of what the problem is, who is at fault, and best of all it points the way to the future. Thanks

Epic episode Shawn. This has to be one the most amazing interview I have ever watched. The disgust, rage, sadness and awe felt during this episode makes me sick. Every politician in the US should watch this. The shame should compel them to be better or resign; or, like Scott said, leave their stars on the table!

The politicians KNOW what happened and they are hoping we all forget! ALL AMERICAN CIVILIANS should have to watch this so they are no longer ignorant to the facts… breaks my heart that in good faith War Fighters made promises and then the politicians COWARDICE made them appear to be liars. MEN that make honest promises never get over treacherous sh*t like that… the government didn’t make the promises THE WAR FIGHTERS DID in good faith!!!

Excellent & very interesting video, I learned a lot, what a guy Scott Mann is. I live in the UK & my son is a serving soldier in the British army, he was at Kabul airport for the evacuation, so I have some insight into what happened there, as we all know now it wasn't good, in fact a humanitarian disaster to put it mildly. I love the interview style that Shawn has, low key & no BS, he just lets his guests shine through.
