This podcast is the one that changed my life. I didn't serve, I'm blind n one eye and couldn't serve. I wish I was born different. I went down a different path because of this OXY at 15, coke and OXY at 16, kicked out at 18. Homeless from 18 to 23. January 10th 2020 I got sober. Never did understand how a podcast changed anyone's life. Today is January 10th, 2025 and this is the one that change my life. This guy had me in tears, I listened from beginning to end. The trauma from robbing, stealing and doing drugs because I didn't have a dad hit home. I thank Shawn for hosting this man for giving my life a different perspective.

Growing up I had a bunch of unrelated Uncles and as l got older hearing their stories they were just kids from the neighborhood that had alcoholic or drug / alcoholic abusive homes and ran away but my Grandfather took them in. Just before my Grandfather passed he sat me down and told me his Vietnam experience ( which he never spoke about ). The first person he killed, in his words was a “Poor boy, couldn’t have been more than 10 years old”. This haunted him for decades and made so much more sense of him trying to save every boy in the neighborhood after his duty. He came back became a police officer, then retired as a Detective. The man was always trying to help everyone always up until he passed.
@mattjack398310 күн бұрын
My Dad was also in Vietnam. He served 3 tours. And he was an auxiliary Sheriff's deputy. (Auxiliary deputies are alot like volunteer firefighters, except for the Sheriff's department. He went on patrol twice a month, and worked the jail twice a month. And attended a week long training seminar every year). But what he actually did for a living was own and operate a horse and cattle ranch. Which i do now as well, along with a few other endeavors. When I turned 17 he signed for me to enlist in the Army, and I later deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. I was in Iraq for the invasion. Idk where I would be without my Dad. He never breathed a word about his military service or his time in Vietnam in my life. We knew he had been awarded a Bronze Star with Valor, and a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart. But that was it. It wasnt until after my second tour that we sat down with a few drinks and talked about it all. And we started talking regularly with each other about both of our experiences. It was a very cathartic thing for the both of us, and helped us both out quite a bit. I definitely had PTSD, but i was very fortunate to have had my Dad there to talk to and help me thru it. And i had a far easier time dealing with it than most of the guys I served with because of that. My Dad is always trying to help everyone and anyone he can. And he's always been like that for as long as I can remember. I dont believe ive ever heard him tell someone asking him for help No. It's certainly one of the ways he has coped with his experiences in Vietnam. And I've found over the years that helping others, and being there for others, whether they are combat veterans or just regular civilians, has helped me quite a bit as well. Your Dad sounds like a real good guy, and the way you talk about him reminds me of my Dad. I'm sure if our Dads knew each other they would be good friends.

Mr. Fettes thank you for your service. You only have one thing in Combat, and that is your team. If they were prepared enough to exfil the hostage, those 5 could have taken out you and your team. War should not be necessary, but unfortunately it is. You accepted the BURDEN OF PROTECTING YOUR NATION, you did what was necessary. Your regret and your Soul show your humanity. It is NORMAL to suffer like you are, but self imposed suffering will extinguish your flame. We need You, for who you are, for what you represent. The toughest work in the world, your job, but equally your healing. You have done some of the most demanding, frightening things for your fellow Americans. You have ONE JOB NOW - YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE YOURSELF. Every person seeing this knows you did your duty, we have deep compassion for your hurt, but what we all want is you to be well. BZ, but your mission isn't over soldier. Make peace with yourself, you are worth it. You deserve it, you have earned compassion to an infinite scale. Thank you for your service from an Ally. Thank you to all of the other Vets and those that don't consider themselves vets because they didnt see Combat. I get it, but you signed the line for Unlimited Liability up to and including your life. Now is hard, but it will pass.

I wish he could see inside my heart and experience the compassion I have for him and that any decent person wud feel for him. I hate the idea that the brave - our true heroes not only take on the worst jobs to keep us safe but then in turn are left to self destruct for having done them. I want to hold him and tell him he cannot carry this anymore - I would carry it for him if I cud. I will pray he finds the peace he and his family deserves. What a brave man to share this with us. Killed numerous chicoms and North Koreans, had a bag of gold fillings from dead enemies, when he mustered out of the US Army. Lifelong Alcoholic. Cousin Vietnam War, combat Medic in Arty Battalion, Americal Division, sister Battalion to Calley's Bn, had patrolled through My Lai, some time period, 1968, heavy combat. He saw other war atrocities. PTSD and post-war drug use. Trauma seems to be the common denominator of most combat veterans.

Absolutely heartbreaking, I was listening to it with earphones on standing at a window about to receive a ticket at work and I starting tearing up!! The honesty, pain and description of him paddling over to where his mate ended his life is so palpable and you can only imagine the thoughts and feelings going through that poor man’s soul 😞 Thankyou for your honesty mate, that couldn’t of been easy. Just shows how war a killing is something that we shouldn’t be doing as humans. I’ll never forget watching all the episodes of ‘band of brothers’ with a young lad months before he went into training as a royal marine, the feeling that he wanted to experience all of that , including the killing, was obvious and even I felt it a bit. He went into the Royal Marines and passed out as one of the best in the bunch and won one of the two awards they give out at the end of pass out that is available, I’m not sure which one sorry, but he won one of them. Before he went on tour he said he really wanted to kill somebody and he didn’t really care who or what it was, after coming out he has struggled big time. This only strengthens my opinion that we as humans shouldn’t kill others.

I have lost a lot in my life but I'm also very blessed to have had help with the therapists I've seen and the physical training I'm able to do. What many people don't understand is that when you are a man going through this, you are still only as valuable as you are useful because there is no such thing as unconditional love for a man. You will be abandoned and laughed at and still expected to support others. I thank God that Shawn Ryan is giving these teir 1 guys an outlet and giving awareness what these men have gone through and continue to go through.

Excellent pod. Let's say I've been in several difficult situations and had to act accordingly. Remember unless somebody was in your situation/shoes they'll never know. I've had the booze and addiction including losing my marriage which was always difficult and a decade of hell. Ok now with a FANTASTIC woman who's done everything for me.

The nature of the call, the use of skills you worked so hard to learn, require using them.The beautiful part of being good at those skills is eliminating the bad guys and their threats. There are a very few that could develop those skills enough to be useful when its needed. You hung in to be able to step up to the call. You are willing to come to the aid in those calls. That is because you were meant for that job. Because there is a bad nature of that job, you have got to find forgiveness in your mind for the downsides, mistakes or bad outcomes in the situations you must face. Never again step up to a call unless you are ready to forgive yourself with the downsides of the call. Also, realize you have greater value than the downsides that occur, just by stepping up to the call ! Thanks dude, for stepping up to the call. 😊

That was a gripping & intense show, the way it cut between the story & Jordan was exceptionally well done. But where’s the finish!?? That can’t be it
@ShawnRyanShow13 күн бұрын
There is a finish, it's just not in this episode. Jordan Peterson is Episode #108 and Christ Fettes is #156.

Someone almost successfully murdered me with a baseball bat. It was on christmas eve; I bled out for at least three hours, I didnt know you could lose that much blood and survive. So much blood, it was just everywhere. Its been fifteen years and Im just now starting EMDR therapy, I am currently in the beginning of a disability case; I have not been able to keep a job in 15 years, at least I stopped using drugs. PTSD is crippling. keep me in your prayers

I never comment on YT videos but this really moved me. If I could take any of his pain onto my shoulders I’d do it gladly for this guy. We don’t know or care enough about what these heroic individuals do on our behalf! The fact that they get screwed over so often by self serving politicians is our collective tragedy. We continue to allow this suffering to be borne by the best of us.

The pain in his voice, man, had me well up, man. I could feel his anguish. I have seen a lot of loss of life and trauma as well. Its an agony only the person that has been through it knows. Christ was my only way that worked for me. I understand the replays, the overthinking, and the second questioning brother. It eats you alive. Im praying for you man. JP as always does any amazing breakdown of how he helps his patients. Amazing video Shawn.

Shawn. Thank you for helping our guys to understand what they had to do. War is horrible in every war our guys have had to do bad thing to fix the evil that the bad guys have done. Try to correct a wrong with a wrong is got to be incredibly hard to come home with. You’ve helped me understand a fraction of what theses men and their families go through when they comeback state side. My heart has always pulled me to reach out physically when I meet one in passing. I’ve literally asked if I could give them a hug When I do I whisper in their ear. I’m so glad you are back home. You are safe now and you need to leave what happened over there. I’m so grateful I met you. I’ve been praying for you and God finally let me hold you. ❤. I don’t know if that ever made a difference in what they were dealing with internally. That I didn’t even know about. Because I don’t ask I just felt the need to express to a complete stranger how grateful I am for here. How much they are still needed ❤ Thank you Shawn and to all of our guys for the bad they have had to do to keep our home safe ❤
