The excellent thing about the Dane axe is, that you can use the head of the axe for the killing strikes, and the shaft or haft, as a quarterstaff, for defense and parrying an opponents weapon in close quarters combat. In addition, the blunt top of the axe could also be used to apply force in a push tactic, without necessarily killing an opponent. It is quite a versatile weapon and tool.

"Hey...I can still eat this, so I'm not going to throw it away..." He sounds like my husband raiding the fridge. The axe looks like an effective weapon, and like my husband the narrator is an impressive example of a human male. The name Bjorn means "bear", and it suits him!
@punkbloater6 жыл бұрын
That’s dried meat and realy hard, so this would go clean through almost any part of a human. Long reach to go over shields or hook them and pull down and long enough to reach a person wielding a sword. I think you can see this type of axe in action if you search «Wolin Festival» in Polan, it’s the closest thing you get to a real viking battle. My god it’s a mess of crazy people! :D

That was a very interesting video. It is sobering to think of the force that weapon can generate. Ive read that the saxon atmy had men with two handed axes that they swung around in circles before striking their target. They had to go in front of the shield wall so that they didn't hit their own compatriots. It was said they could slice a horse "in twain". Your video is an excellent reenactment. Thanks for making the video!

Warriors using the dane axe were usually part of a 2-man team. The front man would have a shield and a 1-handed weapon, and would draw the main attention. The axe wielder would be behind the front man, and off to a side slightly. He could attack from over his partner for attacks from above, or around the sides to either catch an unguarded opening, or even to go for the legs of an opponent - either with a hooking attack, or pure damage.
@robertcorbell10066 жыл бұрын
I take it that this would be your weapon in battle while the bow would be your tool for providing food for the raiding party when in character. While two-handed weapons rely on being able to block with stave-like techniques and can leave one vulnerable without a shield, you can still by-pass most shields by hooking them down or pulling them aside while also breaking through certain armors. Part of the reason this is a cool and very useful, not to mention deadly and effective weapon. :)

I hate to see youtubers test weapons and anything really on bottles and food, its so wasteful, it really frustrates me over how much people don't seem to care about the environment and the energy that has gone into producing the foods. It feels so good to know that there is someone who would not waste good food.

Such a simple and, dare I say, elegant weapon. I have a woodworking axe made by Gransfors, which is just like a short version of this. It is my favourite axe as it is so versatile. When I get my forge working again I think I will make one of these but maybe with a spike of some sort on the rear of the head. Great video - thanks.

The shape of the head also probably evolved from conserving the cost of very expensive steel. By making the body and throat thin and giving the bit a hooked shape, you have a lot less steel and still a long cutting edge.

Cool video. I don't remember where I read it, but I was under the impression that berserkers were not real, insofar as they weren't mad men frothing at the mouth. I supposed they may have been what you described - a means to create panic in the enemy with axes. And campfire stories told to frighten. Schola Gladitoria recently did some tests with a dane axe (based on a museum example), and they were also impressive.

@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know. I didn't want to go into the fighting techniques, it tends to attract a special kind of people... But it feels a lot like long stick fighting in the Thai tradition, actually. But that is just the feeling I get when I hold the axe.
@huds50056 жыл бұрын
I agree, it has much versatility. I also agree with the whole Tactics and technique discussion, when it comes to our ancient ancestors unless there are written accounts its all speculation. People tend to use or throw in current bias because that is all they know.

Good morning my friend. I’m in the medical field by trade and was wondering how traditional Vikings would treat various illness and injury. Would this be an interesting video to make?
@user-mq5xt5jf4o6 жыл бұрын
That’s a very interesting question. Lots of skeletons have been found showing healed up battle wounds, even to the head, how did they treat such serious wounds? Vikings were not the only warriors in the world at that time; I don’t know where to find info about this, but it must be out there somewhere. In Scandinavia, “Vølve” was the name of wise women, who had a substantial knowledge of a wide range of medical herbs to treat different conditions, they also used hallucinogens such as henbane to ease pain and “witchcraft” (=placebo effect, I guess...).
@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen6 жыл бұрын
It is very intriguing to look into this. We have the parly mythic assumption that they would use onion soup to smell if inner organs were punctured etc. And we know they at least sometimes survived having a limb severed. Apart from that, it's a lot of guesswork. We do know, however, that some things that can only be cured with modern medicine would kill them. For instance, they were vulnerable to infections and parasites.
