actually in Norse meaning Earl is lower then a Jarl.. Earl is like a Count while Jarl is a Duke.. Dukes are higher on a Royal title then a Count is.. and in middle ages Jarl was discontinued and Duke title was put in for Scanavian lands..

That part always pissed me off. Sacrifices were supposed to want to do it. Why didn't they ask Athelstan, why didn't they even bother telling him? Don't make no SENSE!

More likely that they needed to be devoted to the gods, and be dear to others. I think, since Athelstan was Ragnar's sacrifice, everyone else kind of asumed Ragnar would have told him already. It was on Ragnar, really. May be he deep down feared Athelstan would refuse, or something... unless he just assumed Athelstan would cassually agree, if he truly believed in the Gods like he'd made it seem. But then again, to them being sacrificed was meant to be a great honor, and one needed to sacrifice the best and most valuable, so it really says a lot the Ragnar chose *him.* From his pov, he was honoring Athelstan with that, and Athelstan kind of betrayed him with his secret devotion to Christ. So it was sort of a mutual lying there.

Watched Game of Thrones, the first two episodes, really didn't like it. Vikings, on the other hand, loved it from episode 1. I know all the Game of Thrones fans say you have to watch the whole first season to get into it, but I just feel if the first episode isn't good enough to really hook you (like TWD for example), then why would you watch the rest? :-) But to each his own.
