In a world of knife makers trying to stand out by adding exotic materials, super steels, and insane visual designs, it is nice to see a traditionally made knife and there is no knife more traditional than a puukko. They just plain work and are no more or less dangerous to use if you know what you are doing and act responsibly. Nice knife.

I have bought half a dozen Helle knives. They are amazing. I gave one to my dad as a gift. He spent 4 days breaking down an Elk with it and never had to sharpen it. He sent me a message and told me it was the best knife he had ever owned. They don't throw sparks well because that stainless is on the out side the high carbon is in the middle.

Nice Knife - great review! Here in Europe you can get a hold of this famous laminated steel of Helle for way less.. I bought only the blade of the Helle Odel model a few years ago (laminated 3 layer stainless steel with the razor sharp carbon steel in the middle) for about 25€ and made a curly birch handle myself. However Helle Knives you could get for maybe 80€, nowadays maybe 100€.. and as you also pointed out, it's the sharpest blade I've ever come across.

They’re great knives but remember that they were almost always paired with an axe or a larger knife for heavier wood processing. The reason you had trouble using it with a ferro rod is because of the differential heat treat. The blade is much harder than the spine, which is left softer for overall toughness.

This is really important Information Because we all get lost in the woods every day all the time.. and the 1st thing I'm gonna need to do is take down wild game with my Bushcraft knife.

Yep like Puukkos and actually a lot of other Scandinavian design knives they are more for fine carving and cutting meat than for batonning wood. Moras are good because with some of them you can get away with batonning but it's not really the right way to treat them.
@escapetherace1943
@escapetherace1943 Жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 puukos are better at wood than any skinning or meat carving. In fact it's about all they are decent at. The scandi grind just isn't that good as an all around workhorse, not compared to a saber grind or even thick ffg knife. Sharpening a puuko is easy, but they do take way more steel off to sharpen and wear your stones down faster too. I think they have meme popularity status.

Woah. That’s interesting. Thank you for sharing this! I was actually thinking of getting this knife, but I’ve always wanted an axe or tomahawk as well! Thanks man! Guess you learn something new every day!
@geirarnehelland7271
@geirarnehelland7271 Жыл бұрын
@@escapetherace1943 Puukkos are sabre grinds most of the time, just like most other scandinavian knives. Traditionally the knives were honed at a large foot driven grinding wheel, which could give you a keen edge from scratch in a few minutes. If your knife was unsharp, you put on a small secondary edge in a minute. Next time you angled the knife a little lower. After some sharpenings you would be back to the scandi, often with a wider bevel. This was done to get a sharp knife fast, and to avoid taking off more material than necessary. Only new knives were true scandis. :D

👍 Nice history lesson and view of this knife. Regardless of the commercial partnerships involved Helle makes good knives although a little pricey today. I believe this is version of a knife that has been in their line-up for years. Although based upon an historic artifact the handle was a little to short for me. Puukko style knives from Norway, Sweden, and Finland have indeed withstood the test of time as all around EDC blades. However, as one of your other viewers commented their are better bangs for our bucks out there. And, you can obtain a very functional and useful vintage Puukko for just about the same price you can buy a new one. I am “vintage” and like vintage gear. 😂😂😂

Helle knives are great, I have several in my collection. It's definitely heirloom quality craftsmanship as all their knives are very much handmade for the most part and because of the natural materials each piece will be relatively unique. If you haven't checked out the Helle Nord knife you most definitely should. It's a new design they came out with last year and it's really, really good, especially for the sorts of activities you use a knife to perform. All their knife offerings are spectacular, not cheap necessarily, but spectacular nonetheless. 😎

Helle here in Europe is a very well known knife maker company . For sure when talking about traditional scandi knife , is one of the first that comes in mind. The truth is that you choose to review a pricy one , you can get the Gaupe with laminated steel ,or the Alden with 12c27 , both with leather seaths but more simple. Also the Alden has amazing handle ergos, both at 110-130 euro price.

I'm all for handmade fires and the occasional roof system or shelter system when you have the time, But to intentionally screw yourself over so you can Use bushcraft skills is just about the dumbest shit i've ever heard. One of the funniest things about people who got caught up in the whole survival trend is the fact that Is real survivors Have to rarely if ever demonstrate any of the skills you've seen.

I need to stop you. I have a hand made puukko hand forged small blade and it just kicks ass!. I can say anything in the comments...but if I can't show it to you, you would just not understand. Now it's not one of those that have the sheath mostly made out of bone that's so lavishly carved. What I'm saying is all these Scandinavian knives really do what they're meant to do. And God bless them all..I'm gonna try to figure out how to show you through my phone as my computer took its last breath some time ago but I digress..these knives don't hold an edge for a good while. They sharpen like a dream. I have a wood jewel knife ..10 or so years ago I paid,idk..40 to sixty dollars only for the beauty of the handle. The blade was all silly being one side was hollow almost, while the other was a bit fat. All being it was a Scandinavian grind and supposedly handmade. I'm not sure if they make them anymore, but ..........bro for a little camp knife, this little girl works and she's gorgeous! Yes mine has huge reighndeer antler throughout with fiber filters here and there pluss,a through tang construction yea it's not for heavy use..this is for a light duty application or possible an investment however, I didn't pay but really 55 dollars tops for it. This handle was made for my hand. Most wood jewel knives are soo amplified they will not conform to your hand.let me tell you a little about me.i grew up in jersey near Philly great neiborhood, went camping with my parents since I was 3. ......I'm almost 59 now. Boy scouts Indian guides so I'm aware of woods. I research products..some are misses....some work. Since coming to Maine for the last almost 15 years, I feel at home. I have a girl, 2 dogs and a cat. 2 acres of land which almost 200 feet in the back yard is woods, then there's miles of woods. Anyway..I've collected knives through the years. Cheap and expensive...what I have left is a bark river bravo 1 in 3v. I have the mora bushcraft black, and the wood jewel hand crafted. My folders are...my Para 2, my rat 1 and a cheap ganzo for killing lawn tractors..sorry, that was a joke. I have a victorinox farmer and 3 opinels ... an 8, 9, and 10. The 8 is stainless...the others are carbon I bought and had custom made my thunderbird 2 layer hammock. He doesn't make them anymore from what I'm told...I'm telling you all this so you and others know....I buy quality. But not all of it needs to be expensive. This knife you presented is amazing. It's a stick tang...don't beat it up

I own several hunting and outdoor models from him and they are the best and most beautiful knives i've ever had in my hands. Even the sheaths are extremely well made. The model "Amarok" is a great survival/ bushcraft knife.

@@nikolajc7617 But seriously I would guess that it's probably based on knives found by archaeologists in old Viking settlements, or when they buried chiefs with all their worldly possessions.

Huckberry? Ugh… hipster much? Whats next, a $600 Field Outdoor Rug? Time to hit the trails again showing a variety of legit good gear in motion… enough vendor-of-the-month pitchman stuff.

@@gideonstactical The knife is great, huckberry not so much.. always struck me as a kinda dbag'ish overpriced place that thrives on "Huckberry exclusives" and also has $180 shirts among other silly stuff like the $600 Field Outdoor Rug (for real). I don't know man, for many years you've "done" stuff and gone places, now its just a lot of showing stuff..

@@dash8465 thanks for the feed back Dash. I take painstaking time to check company’s I choose to partner with. For every shoutout or spot like that I have turned down 10 companies wanting time on the channel that are a total waste of time for me and you the viewers. I like that many of HB items are USA made and they seem to try hard to give good gear to us in the outdoor community. As to showing stuff, I am curious what you mean? I took this blade hiking, used it extensively, in different environments. In the last two months, I have done 11 videos on trail or in the outdoors, the rest were edc pocket knives. Did you see me hiking gear list last month. Took you all on an epic hike. Always want to bring content to you guys that will be enjoyable and useful. Trying understand want you are critiquing. Thanks in advance for you comment and support 👍

Helle is hella overpriced. Many better alternatives. I truly believe the longer someone reviews on KZbin the more out of touch or scared to say anything factual. All I see are commercials for overpriced gear. I miss the old KZbin when real reviews were everywhere. KZbin demonetized everyone but a select few. Liberals destroy everything

L m a o, we're still using puukus. The scandy grind obsession has died everyone realized that knows that is very unrealistic for everyday life. No one sharpens their knife every weekend so you can pretty much dismiss this idea right now.
