Shields are splintered! - Skildir ro Klofnir

From a poem, völva that recites information to Odin, and describes the state of humanity:
Skeggǫld, Skálmǫld
Skildir ro Klofnir
an axe age, a sword age
shields are riven
-----------------------------------------------------------
Background song: " Algir - Tognatale " by Wardruna.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Vikings is a 2012 BBC television documentary series written and presented by Neil Oliver charting the rise of the Vikings from prehistoric times to the empire of Canute.

@@rymdalkis The language they use is Old Norse, rather than modern Swedish, Norwegian or Danish. It's more Icelandic or Faroese. And I'll not criticise anyones acting, but especially canadian actors really struggle to pronounce some germanic sounds such as ö. I never remember Travis Fimmel(He's australian) properly pronouncing the name Björn. He says something like Byeorn instead. And Katheryn Winnick say Bjorn half times. I'm not scandinavian, but, being turk and studying German makes you aware of things like that. Since Turkish have similar sounds like that. Gustaf is the only actor who really pronounces words like Mjöllnir, Jörmungandr, Midgard properly in this show. At least of the ones who are in this show from the beginning.

It can be spellt skegg(j)öld, skálmöld, skildir (ro) klofnir, or skegg(j)ǫld, skálmǫld, skildir (ro) klofnir. The letters in parentheses are optional. It is part of the (poetic and prose) Edda. Also note that the runic alphabet used by the vikings is NOT the 24 letter runic alphabet that everyone seems to believe the vikings used. The vikings used a much more simplified runic alphabet where most of the letters represent a bunch of sounds, and there are variations in different parts of Scandinavia. You might want to learn more about it before spraying it onto your wall. :)

+Carl West Oh, it gets better. Floki is quoting part of Völuspa, specifically the part where mankind has reached it's lowest point during Ragnarök. One translation of it goes like this: "Brothers will fight and kill each other, sisters' children will defile kinship. It is harsh in the world, whoredom rife-an axe age, a sword age -shields are riven-a wind age, a wolf age-before the world goes headlong. No man will have mercy on another."

Lauren Fox I can think of few. Easy answer would be Fenrir. After all wolf that is fated to slay Odin would be the ultimate harbinger of despair. But then there are his sons, Sköll and Hati. They both chase sun and moon respectively and during Ragnarök they finally catch them and eat them, taking the light away from the world. Floki thought that his darkest moment had arrived as everything he so perfectly designed fell in ruin, that seems appropriate. Then there the fact that "Sköll" means "Treachery" and "Hati" means "He who hates" or "Enemy." Floki had a breakdown where he ranted how he was betrayed by the gods even when did everything they wanted. Next he came to conclusion that it was Athelstan, his enemy, who had somehow caused his downfall behind the grave. Of course then there is the fact that since "Sköll" means treachery, Floki could mean that enemy is using trickery to defeat them. Given that Franks really had some clever tricks in store, (Count Odo's spiked wheel really felt like something out of indiana jones) Vikings to whom mano-a-mano is a norm probably thought that whole siege was massively unfair.

I just adore how it carries absolutely no fat whatsoever, trusting the audience like any show should by the 3rd season. It launches forward with such momentum by the gang venturing to Wessex, this time with peace, union and land in mind, only for that to all be undone mid season with the accumulated deaths of Torstein (under a Christian Sky, furthering the eventual dissolution of Floki and Ragnar's love for one another) and Athelstan (the straw that breaks the camel's back), Kalf's betrayal of Lagertha while she was in Wessex, Aslaug cheating with Harbard which leads to both Ragnar's further growing animosity and Siggy's death and the tailspin it sends Rollo into, the settlement being ravaged, the agreement with it violently dissolved and Ragnar killing a man to keep it a secret. Finally we come to the final arc of the season, the first stab at Paris, where we've reached an utter 180 from that exciting, familiar spirit found in the beginning to mid part of the Season, to the gut wrenching turmoil Ragnar is in post Athelstan's death and the subtle mind games he works against Floki, the initial failures of each individual member of the group to take Paris, Ragnar's suffering a chronic injury, Floki beginning to doubt the intentions and safety net of the Gods after his failure, the signs of Rollo's final betrayal and the disaster that carries over into Season 4. I know I'm probably taking a lot from the final 3rd of the Season but I really love that nosedive the Season does from the hopeful, prosperous energy in the initial episodes, to the dissent, betrayal and tension, even despite Ragnar's lone substantial victory through feigning his death. What a rollercoaster this Season is, just brilliant. And like Christina said, I just love the Frankia sections with Odo, Gisla and Charles in particular. The latter for me just dominates every scene he's in as an especially, beautifully complex, in thanks to both to the actor and the writing for him. He just chews every bit of scenery he's given and my one disappointment is that he didn't return in Season 4b but I imagine they didn't want to remove the spotlight from Rollo by that stage, given it's set about 12 years later.

It's hard not to see the inspiration of Tolkien when he wrote these lines: "Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!" As the Axe time, Sword time, Shields are splintered is from Voluspa and Tolkien was a linguist. He's been working on the Beowulf text for a very long time. I wouldn't be surprised to learn he also studied scandinavian sagas and not just anglo-saxon ones.
