Well historically speaking chainmail was the armour of the time and most arrows couldn't punch through, had high rate of fire but high skill cap versus crossbows which could punch through armour but at the time had a very low rate of fire but a low skill cap.

well if "chainmail" was effective agains armor nobody will bother to develop plate .. mail is effective againts cuts., but no againts trusts and projectiles .. arrows are expensive and you need a lot of practice to use bow properly. (mainly of strengh) with crossbow you do not

They dont go too far away from their ships. They would have to land at least 5 miles down river and try to gi undetected to the firts(they were well defended,basicallylike small castles they would have to lay siege & that would take time(they didnt have) it would have gave the french time to mobilize that would led to a blowout think they invade a country with a small number 1,000 at most ,viking ships hold 35 -50-60 for their bigger ships, they had 3 different ships viking ran the water well over 600years the boats can go in oceans,seas & small shallow river ways powered by sail & oars. They get in raid kill loot kidnap and gone fast never given them time to assemble. There fighting style was crazy fight as one unit form famous shield wall great protection against arrows barrage & calvary. They were huge in size especially for the time period 6feet plus. 200+ lb.. average European 5"7-5"9 165. 1 vike can take on 4-5 . 3-500 dead at the cost of 15-20 norsemen. There skills at archery was underestimated, then came 2lb Rocks getting slang next javalins/spears throw, 40-50 yards kills double edged Axes (if u were lucky/skilled little to block with sheilds now they were cumbersome) axe or spear stuck in it atlast close combat. After losing 25-36% of men K.I.A. .

A other major factor the English were terrible with the bow(arrows were expensive) a reg. Bow takes skill & years of training to pefect/master the crafT,think knights didnt Fuchs with the bow, pass 50 yards they didnt do slot of damage. Until the longbow came change everything 150yard kill with armour. The hundred year war against France (they had the best,biggest unmatched calvary for few hundredyears. France is triple size in land & population, begin training as a page at age 7

In hollywood, it's barely depicted, but irl most medieval battles weren't as chaotic as everyone just running and spreading out, since that doesn't really keep people alive super efficiently. Most of the casualties during medieval battles were when an army was routed and their soldiers were fleeing, in which cavalry and archers could pretty easily pick them off. Usually, there were rough lines of soldiers, which would try to keep formation, with spear and shield walls probably being common formations (most footmen the early and high middle ages had large shields like kites or rounds, and spears were a universal battlefield weapon). Bright colours on their shields and armour would have pretty easily marked out who was who, a long with the aforementioned lines of soldiers, since its usually not too hard to figure out which side of the battle you're on.

Remey Rune the Vikings actually did, Ragnar did actually siege and sack Paris, going up the river since the French didn’t have the big chains you see in the film and eventually got up to Paris, where after a long siege he broke into the city and sacked it, even using Roman style Testudoes, whether his men just knew how to do this or he looked in a book he found, saw a portrayal of a Roman testudoe and thought it was a good idea I don’t know. But I know he broke in and sacked it where the French king gave them a ton of gold to leave, this had the exact opposite effect of what you’d believe and sackings of Paris became a regular occurrence until they were finally defeated. This is were the French kill basically went to the defeated Danes “hey, you guys are big and scary, how about we give you Normandy and protect us against the Vikings”, the Danes readily agreed and fully converted to being French, learning the language, becoming Christian, getting it on with the locals etc. Where they would become the Normans.
