Vila Viçosa - where kings stopped wearing the crown

Vila Viçosa is important in the history of Portugal. Recovered from the Moors in 1226, it became the seat of the Duchy of Bragança. It was here that nobles in favor of cutting ties with Spain managed to convince D.João II, the 8th Duke of Bragança, after much hesitation, to assume the throne as D.João IV.
The Ducal Palace is a monumental building whose construction began in 1501, by decision of the fourth Duke of Bragança, D. Jaime. Enhancement and improvement campaigns continued throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, giving the building its current size and characteristics - the 110 meter long façade is unique in Portuguese civil architecture and reveals classical inspiration.

Parabéns pelo vídeo, tenho muitas e boas memórias de Vila Viçosa. No que respeita á coroação de Nossa Senhora da Conceição como Rainha de Portugal, desde então. D. João IV, não aceitou ser coroado pois sabia que a coroa ainda pertencia a D. Sebastião e que este estava desaparecido em Alcácer Quibir. Diz-se que D.Joāo terá falado com D. Sebastião antes de este desaparecer e que, este lhe terá dito para D. João aceitar a coroa. . João aceitou ser rei, dando início á dinastia de Bragança e por decreto régio consagrou N. S. da Conceição como Rainha de Portugal sendo os reis apenas regentes de Portugal. Uma história linda de honra.

essa história parece um pouco mal contada,......primeiro porque D.João IV 1604-1656 nem poderia ter sequer ter falado com D.Sebastião 1554-1578, e segundo porque o coroamento de Nª Srª da Assunção em 1646 foi oficial e formalizado e teve a ver com o agradecimento de Portugal ter recuperado a sua independência, e nada teve a ver com a derrota dos portugueses na batalha de Alcacer Quibir e com o desaparecimento de D.Sebastião.

Do ponto de vista político faria sentido o recato quanto ao reclamar-se a coroa, quando é sabido que o mito sebástico estava em plena força e teve até papel relevante nas sublevações no interior português nos finais do reinado de Filipe III.É afinal, D. Pedro II, filho de D.João IV que manda construir nos Jerónimos, o túmulo em que "Jaz ou não, Dom Sebastião" . É claro que a motivações religiosa antecede as demais. E a esse respeito há grades afinidades na devoção Mariana de dois monarcas fundadores de dinastias: D. João I e D. João IV.@@360portugal
