Nadine Sierra, 2018 winner of the Metropolitan Opera’s prestigious Beverly Sills Artist Award, has made her first album for Deutsche Grammophon and Decca Gold, having signed an exclusive contract with the labels last year. There’s a Place for Us was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Robert Spano. The album presents the soprano’s stunning vocal abilities in an eclectic choice of American classical music - as well as works by Bernstein, the repertoire ranges from Stephen Foster and Douglas Moore to Stravinsky and Villa-Lobos, and on again to Ricky Ian Gordon, Osvaldo Golijov and Christopher Theofanidis, with texts in Spanish and Portuguese as well as English.

WOW!! I'm a long time fan of Nadine Sierra. But now ... way more! Sure she sings it wonderfully. That is to be expected. But also, her pronunciation is really good! She doesn't just sing with a Spanish accent like so many others; she really made an effort to get the Portuguese right. (Portuguese pronunciation is notoriously difficult and entirely different from Spanish) Every word is understandable. Congratulations! Among American singers, I believe only Kathleen Battle's version is more idiomatic.

At the end, Bidu Sayão , who recorded the piece with the composer, HUMS the music beautifully, which is much more difficult than what is done here, beginning at 3:50, with open mouth. This singer only hums for a few seconds. The final octave leap, of course, she doesn't try to close her mouth and hum - after all, it's very hard (but Bidu does it).
