The word Dard itself is unknown in any languages of the area except Khowar, where it means 'way of the language' or 'dialect Dardic is a geographical concept, denoting the northwesternmost group of Indo-Aryan languages languages: Kashmiri, Poguli, Kishtwari Shina, Brokskat, Kalkoti, Kohistani Shina, Kundal Shahi, Palula, Savi, Ushoji; Gandhari languages: Maiya (Indus Kohistani), Bateri, Chilisso, Gawri, Gawri, Tirahi, Torwali, Wotapuri-Katarqalai, Mankiyali Chitrali languages: Kalasha (Urtsuniwar), Khowar Pashayi languages Kunar languages: Dameli, Gawar-Bati, Nangalami (Grangali), Shumashti.
