Village People is an American disco group well known for their on-stage costumes depicting American masculine cultural stereotypes such as native Indians, cowboys, policemen, and Navy soldiers, as well as their catchy tunes and suggestive lyrics. Originally created by Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo to target disco's gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy personae, the band quickly became popular and moved into the mainstream.
'In The Navy' was the follow up single to the #1 hit 'YMCA' that was no 1 in many countries around the world including UK, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands.
In The Navy reached #3 in the USA, #1 in Canada and the Netherlands and #2 in the UK.

I remember when this song was released. As a kid, I thought it was quite catchy. As an old man now, I still find it catchy. As a U.S. Marine during the late 80's to late 90's, this song and video (along with Cher's "If I could Turn Back Time") gave me so much joy that I didn't join the Navy.

They filmed their official video for this song on my first ship. I was gone on leave at the time so I missed seeing them. The Navy did use this for their recruiting until they found out their orientation and they stopped using it.

Years ago, when I iived in Vegas, the guys would come into the disco where I worked. Felipe Rose (Indian) would always grab me to dance. This was after the show and they were still in costume. What fun! The name of the place was and still is "The Gipsy"
