Grupo creado por los productores franceses Jacques Morali y Henri Belolo, quienes ensamblaron un grupo cuyo objetivo era atraer al público gay, parodiando los estereotipos del colectivo. Sus miembros originales eran: Víctor Willis (el policía), Felipe Rose (el indio), David Hodo (el obrero), Alex Briley (el militar), Glenn Hughes (el motociclista) y Randy Jones (el cowboy). Su nombre hace referencia al distrito neoyorkino de Greenwich Village, zona clave para el movimiento de liberación homosexual. La canción corresponde a las siglas de Young Men’s Christian Association, una antigua asociación cristiana que proporciona alojamiento temporal a hombres jóvenes. Después de que Y.M.C.A. debutara en la lista en febrero de 1979, tan solo una semana después, el 3 de marzo de 1979, ya había alcanzado el nº 1 de Los 40. Mantuvo el primer puesto durante dos semanas consecutivas. Una canción compuesta en 20 minutos Randy Jones (el cowboy) explicaba así a la revista Spin cómo nació Y.M.C.A.: “Cuando me trasladé a Nueva York en 1975, me uní a McBurney YMCA. En 1977, llevé allí a Morali en tres o cuatro ocasiones. Le encantó. Estaba fascinado con ese lugar en el que una persona podía practicar con pesas, jugar al baloncesto, nadar, recibir clases y conseguir una habitación. Esas visitas conmigo le inspiraron, y así surgió Y.M.C.A.. En un principio, Village People utilizó Y.M.C.A.. como relleno para su álbum. David Hodo lo contaba así en Spin: “Habíamos terminado nuestro tercer álbum y necesitábamos una canción más para rellenar. Jacques escribió Y.M.C.A. en unos 20 minutos: la melodía, los coros, el esbozo. A continuación se la dio a Víctor Willis le mandó completar el resto. Yo era un poco escéptico respecto a algunos de nuestros hits, pero en el instante en el que escuché Y.M.C.A. supe que había algo especial porque sonaba como un anuncio. Y a todo el mundo le gustan los anuncios”. Great Steve´s Remix !!!
