The mahangu didn’t go bad. They just require a lot of work to make them clean clean again. Toyi tsu tango with no water then toyi thitha. You don’t do it rough though, don’t know how to explain explain it well but after that process they’ll look good after. Also find plastic containers ngaashi omayemele eto tulamo uusila and everything that’s a product already. Eentunga put them together and store them ontop of something not on the floor(nenge okombanda yeyemele) Am not married but what I’ve seen people do post etalo lyelugo is just carry on with their lives as per usual. Doing wifey duties but there isn’t something specific they need to do. Also if you have empya or given epya, just speperate iilya yombuto and add chilli nenge omutoko gwapola. But miilya yomalovu giilya you can put omutoko there before storing(because that one can be washed before preparing)

The plastic mahangu storage is the best. I have them over 15 years and can keep mahangu in them for three years but still looks new once I open the plastic storage. Keep the plastic mahangu storage in a ventilated place like the store room and not in the sun.

Thank you so much Mr Ndombo. So basically I don’t need to add any preservative when storing in the plastic container? It’s quite interesting to know that perhaps plastic has better storage integrity than metal✨

Metal are subject to corrosion but plastic are not. Apart from that they absorb heat which keeps bug's away or afloat to the top of the storage. You can get them at Ondangwa plastic converter's Onethindi or at the old Tannery on the way to Oshakati.

But you can get a plastic iigadhi, then you look but there are people who can store for you. Iha tukitha (like they store and worms don’t get in) but I have seen omutoko being used ( omutoko is ash)

It’s not normal, iilya has gone bad, oya tukwa shili, if it gets those worms. Some people store iilya if like air tight containers so those worms don’t go in. You can also put omutoko and leaves 🍃, can’t remember which one but it’s fixable

The mordern storage ( Okaanda) is the best , look like the traditional one but made in plastic , my father bought it it from Oshakati Open market.. or you can use those big plastic containers ( okangoma )

New subscriber here... I love how "real" you are..... It's not a concern that the mahangu grains (iilya) look like that... They will be fine once pounded. I grew up in the north (village), we grew up putting ashes inside the storage (iigadhi/omashisha) ... Tightly sealed

It may seem like it’s a boring gift but trust me… you’ll need the grains especially when drought hits 🙂. I use the grains for my babies Katete and they are sufficient for the entire year. Don’t refuse the grains ntowele… you will need them.
