What really struck me most about this was the total lack of surprise at the ultimate destroyer of the world being a giant cartoon character! They just accepted it! Perhaps all the stupid things that have been in films since have blunted the impact of that. In 1984 this brought the house down with the whole cinema just freaking out and collapsing into laughter because we'd never seen anything like it. Really, one of the great moments of my childhood cinema experiences. Has it been ruined by time?

They might just be unfamiliar with the way we use characters as branding for products, so they didn’t realize it was a giant spokesman for the marshmallow industry haha. Like, they thought it was just a regular (giant) ghost.

@@severalwolves I had no idea it was about advertising when I saw this. It was the fact that after all the sinister build up it was the stupidest thing ever! I mean, I'm British. I had no idea about American marshmallow adverts and didn't even know what marshmallows were! It just LOOKED utterly ridiculous and I couldn't believe they spent all that money and had all that build up to something so hilairiously absurd! Even without context it was really shocking and funny. I don't think anyone in 1984 would have reacted so blankly to it. It was a really big deal.

@@alimantado373 I don't understand the hype for Bill Murray, but the cinema went crazy in 1984 to an extent I've never seen again and it was a massive hit here. I don't even think there WAS a reference. The joke was that we'd all seen giant monsters in films and they were basically plasticene but we pretended they were real and scary and then this came along and just cut the crap and didn't even bother pretending and just had the stupidest looking giant monster ON PURPOSE! No knowledge of American snacks required. We got it just fine. My point was that I didn't think people got the point now and given the responses it seems they don't.

both Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis thought the best idea for an ultimate destroyer would be a literal corporate mascot, that the epitome of human evil could be summed up by a capitalist icon as for Bill murray, His type of comedy is unique and totally subjective but when he was really big in the 70’s and 80’s, it was because that brand of character was so new and surreal

One of the best hidden jokes in all of cinema history is in this movie. We have Louis, forever locking himself out of his apartment, when he is in fact destined to become the Keymaster of Gozer. :D And you have to admire that so many things were done with practical special effects, including the eggs popping out of their shells which, frankly, I would love to know how this was accomplished.
