How have these guys never seen the Japan tsunami footage on here yet, it is literally mother nature at its fiercest. Heartbreaking to see, but important historically all the same, and the fact Japan bounced back so soon is testament to how awesome they are.

Now imagine how it was 500 years ago when sailors were in ships made of wood and flannel facing the wrath of the oceans and the seas. Experts say that sailing in those days was more dangerous than going to the moon in a rocket ship.

@NPc Only water, LOL. You ever been on the ocean? I'd rather ride the Omak Suicide Race, myself. Much more fun way to get killed...and I'd be in control of the horse.

@@jpbm1873 I was thinking of that! Especially the Vikings, with the North Sea being one of their sea roads. I'd like to see what our villagers would think of the Coast Guard training at the Columbia Bar, where they let the ships be completely rolled over like a kayak as part of the course.

Cape Horn is a hell of place to sail through. Panama Canal severely decreased the chances of sailors being swept out to sea in such times.

Oof, this brings back memories from a graduation cruise I went on with my classmates. We ended up in the middle of a big storm and it was really difficult to walk down the corridors onboard the ship. Thinking back, I was young and dumb and thought that a significant amount of drinks would cancel out the rocking and make me walk more stable 🤣 I probably looked like Jack Sparrow when I walked 😅 (nowadays, I would try to be as sober as I can in case of an emergency, but I didn't think of that ten years ago) 🚢🤦♀

I've had some moments crossing the north sea when there were still affordable ferries crossing. One of my worst mistakes was going to the on-board cinema during a storm. For several seconds you'd be looking at the screen above you until the wave was crested and you almost lifted off the seat before looking at the screen below you until you hit the trough and was pushed down into the seat before the cycle repeated itself. The year was 1984, the movie was Amadeus and it was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. I have never been so seasick in my life. 😂 I had quite a few storms on such crossings but the best was the one where I didn't have a seat or cabin and had to stay awake through the whole crossing. The shelves in the duty free shop were all empty with the contents spread all over the floor. The funniest thing was watching people trying to dance in the on-board disco while the ferry tillted left and right and those fools falling and staggering from one end of the dancefloor to the other. 😆

For such a small stretch of sea, the North Sea can be unforgiving and conditions can change rapidly. I've been on a day trip on a retired tug boat off the east coast of Scotland, the boat was rocking slightly when we left harbour and then sea got a lot rougher nearer the end with that medium sized tug being thrown about. There has also been reports of freak waves, where waves in a storm merge to form one big wave and a deep swell at the front. Is amazing how our Saxon and Nordic ancestors manage to make their crossing of the North Sea to settle on the British Isle's. No matter how well designed the big cargo ships are, there are pictures of ships with their bow missing or other structural damage from hitting a freak wave and mostly around the Cape of South Africa. All the crew on board most of these ships rely on the efficiency of the ships engines to smash through them waves front on, many ships are lost when the engines break down or they lose power and the side of the ship gets exposed to oncoming waves. Then there is the off chance where a crew member fails to close a hatch or door to the outer deck and water then fills the ship.

Travelled from Ireland to Scotland on a boat back in the 70s when we hit a horrendous storm, no cabins available, I had a 6 month old baby in my arms, 3 year old by the hand trying to make it to the bathrooms as we were all terribly seasick. But so was everyone else, won’t describe what the bathrooms were like 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮. A nightmare I’ll never forget. Have not been on a boat since 🫣

8:06 Yeah, I'd feel much safer in such small but rugged ships then in those big ones. I'd feel just fine in one of those. But in a big one I'd be worrying about material fatigue etc... Such ships can snap in two if they're worn and heavily loaded in a bad storm... They're not designed to carry the weight of half the ship fully loaded up in the air multiple times and that then slapping down into the sea.
@Luredreier2 жыл бұрын
3:47 Ouch, I'd much rather be in that first boat then that second thing, at least the first one can be maneuvered up against the waves keeping it safe.

Although unlike my grandfather who was a ship cook there's no way in hell I'd cook food in that kind of conditions... He had been burned so often that he could stick his hand into boiling water...
