Agreed, most of what they've experienced is "Bollywood" where the plotlines are far more simplistic, so they probably don't have much in the way of the concept of a "Pyrrhic victory" where the hero wins yet dies. Incest was frowned upon in ancient Rome as "against divine law" for commoners, but the imperial family liked to keep the power in the family. Finally ! And they loved it, they even were emotionnal at the end (I still am every time I watch this masterpiece). It is nice they saw the Roman Empire in action and the Coliseum (you should now show them how it was built and the games that happened there, sometimes even naval battle reconstitutions). Historians have found many errors in the film but they have always recognized that the violence shown between people, the daily violence, the Coliseum violence, the slaves violence, the politics violence, these relationships of power and blood wre very accuratery shown.

Yeah this is a good example of not very historically accurate but getting the historical feel right. It's remained high on my list in spite of the inaccuracies not only because of stellar acting by Joaquin and Russel and Djimon, but it also has a fantastic depiction of Marcus Aurelius. Richard Harris was the perfect casting for him, showing his philosophical and reflective side.

Slaves wore their hair the way their masters demanded. Slaves were often the educated ones within the upper classes, which was a major reason for the complete failure of Rome as an empire; it's ruling classes grew incompetent, as is happening today, a problem that is always waiting when people get lazy. Also all lead piping in the Roman cities.

Please show them a documentary on the colosseum. Or if you have a VR walkabout of the colosseum. Or anything at all. They seemed quite fascinated with it (as would anyone be).

I got to suggest either “Black Hawk Down” or “We were Soldiers.” Both movies are absolutely amazing, heartbreaking, and about true events. Not sure which one would cause them more tears

Marcus Aurelius was probably the best Roman emperor. He was extremely insightful, always worried that power would go to his head. He wrote a book for himself called “Meditations”. It was about stoic philosophy and how to live life justly. He wrote the book for himself, never intending that it would still be in print and read by people 2,000 years later. It is also said he had a servant who’s only job was to follow him around and whisper in his ear “You are just a man” to remind him not to go crazy with power as emperor.

Now that they liked this, would be nice to have Excalibur, its the King Arthur story with some fantasy. Or King Arthur from 2004, they did again but without fantasy elements. Or maybe 300, they will go crazy on the action.

I really enjoy your show and seeing your cultural reactions to some of the biggest movies. It would be awesome if you can watch these movies on a screen the size of a theater.

They said that there was a relationship between the two brothers but that is not true, it was just Comoudus trying to tell his sister. I guess they invented that plot line to emphasize the cowardly and despicable character of this antagonist. And how he was able to manipulate and influence, even against their will, the people around him.

One of the MOST FAMOUS and GREATEST movies ever made. Sweeping, majestic and brutal - just like the Roman Empire once was. Crowe is superb and even just watching this short version, tears are rolling down my cheeks. 😢 Our world STILL NEEDS HEROES. even most western people get some stuff wrong in this movie Rome had deposed it's last king around 500 BC, when it became the first republic. (the word republic itself being invented by them) when Augustus initiated the principate, around 19 BC, Rome was still a Republic. Augustus didn't became a King nor it was hereditary. he seized all the main office of the Republic, concentrating most power, but the Senate still had some power.
