This is why having universal themes is important. This movie beatifully portrayed the themes of comradery, perserverence, and self-sacrifice. By expressing these kinds of universally human experiences, it enables viewers to watch and identify with characters who are of a different race, gender or creed from them.

You should check out Hacksaw Ridge next, about the pacific theatre and a soldier named Desmond Doss who enlisted to serve as a combat medic but refused to carry or use a weapon because it was against his religious beliefs. I still cry even just watching reactions to this movie and the brief clips we see. SPR was inspired by various real life soldiers who were pulled from active duty during World War 2 because many of their brothers had been killed in action. They didn't want entire families to be wiped out because all the draft eligible children had been sent to war. This particular story is historical fiction, giving you an idea of what these men experienced during the horrors of war.

I think his hand shaking is a neurological issue, meaning it's not linked to his emotional state, but just something his body is physically doing, like a twitch. The body is biological but also electric. If the nerves don't function properly they can cause muscles to twitch uncontrollably.

Back then they had some understanding of PTSD, but they called it "combat fatigue". Human reflexes and the flight or fight response is biologically wired to help us save ourselves in quick situations, eg jumping out of the way of a car at the last second, or a parent leaping to the defence of their child from a dangerous animal. However in combat, both systems are constantly "switched on" for extended periods. Thus the body remains flooded with adrenaline for longer than normal. Apparently, that much adrenaline in one's bloodstream for long periods, can become toxic to the body.

Please let them know the German soldier who killed Private Mellish in the knife fight was NOT the German soldier they released, who was credited as Steamboat Willie. That German soldier was wearing a Waffen SS uniform with the SS on the collar. However, yes at the end Upham did in fact shoot Steamboat Willie as he saw him shoot Captain Miller across the river and to also probably get the other German soldiers to cooperate. You can clearly see Steamboat Willie is wearing regular German Wehrmacht uniform.

The military really does separate families so that they aren't all serving together in order to try and prevent things like this, where a whole family is killed, because I think during WWI they would let brothers serve together but then if their battalion all were killed, the whole family was gone. So in WWII they started to make sure they didn't all serve together in the same group to try and prevent that from happening.

Although this movie is fictional, it's pieced together by snippets of moments that actually happened, to give a fair representation of what soldiers went through in WW2. I think the reality was probably so much more brutal than this story, that it wouldn't be able to be a film without greatly damaging people, just for watching it. So, it had to be dumbed down for us to see. That's what I believe.

Bullets do not penetrate water as easily as depicted in this film. Shooting a sniper down the scope is not unusual for sniper on sniper engagements. The driver of the tank would have had armored glass in front of him, so they couldn't have just shot into the tank, like that. Back where I grew up, my next door neighbor was a Marine in Korea, and he killed a Commie T-34 by throwing a grenade down the commander's hatch. By the way, the "Tiger" was a T-34, with a mock-up Tiger turret. It looks so much better than the M-48's tanks they used in older movies.

My favorite story reading about D-Day was about a Navy Destroyer. The ship watched the first wave get annihilated on the beach. So they went full speed towards the beach and at the last moment "popped the hand break" and came parallel to the beach. They started shooting their heavy ship weapons point blank on the defensives. They were under strict orders not to expend ammunition in case the German Navy counter attacked. Out of some 80 rounds in their magazine the ship returned to port with 3 rounds. The men who landed on that specific beach still claim the only reason they succeeded was this ship.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. Those people are often fairly ordinary people with families , lives before or after the war. It is the people that create the wars , send people to war that should be ashamed that they wreck so many lives. I understand it's not so simple though as people need to defend others and fight for freedom

I remember hearing a story when I was in my unit of one guy everyone hate. He passed out drunk one night and they pulled his pants down, slapped Vaseline all over his ass and put some in his hand and stuck a dollar bill in his hand and just let him believe he got up to some shit that night.

I love hearing people speak a different language and then say English names in the middle of it. I have no idea why!

I do prefer these guys watching Historical or sci fi movies. I cant wait to see if the see Kingdom of heaven or Last samurai or any of those. Sci fi because I know it opens their imagination. I watch so many tribal people reacts and sometimes it seems that things are beyond their imagination because they live in isolated places and to see the in aww of things is great. Its like taking a kid to Disneyland or the beach for the first time and seeing their faces.

Could try Captain Phillips, staring Tom Hanks. He is my favourite actor. Or as someone else suggested... Big. Or.... another really good one, staring Tom Hanks and Leonardo Dicaprio... 'Catch me if you can' That is an awesome movie, with 2 big stars, based on a true story.

If I was Caparzo's family, I would've rather had the authentic letter soaked in blood. It would mean a lot more than some clean letter re-written by someone else's hand, all clean and artificial. Give me my son's *real* letter with his blood on it any day. The blood makes the sacrifice more of an impact and more precious, in my opinion. I wouldn't want the copy, I would value the original.
