They are playing music from movies. The S was a symbol for Superman TV & movies. In the TV show, Clark Kent goes into a telephone booth & changes into Superman who has a cape & flies around fighting crime & helping out people in trouble. The band shows him going into the telephone booth, changing into Superman & flying to help straighten a building because he is a very strong superhero. There 2nd formation I believe is from "The Lord of the Rings" movies. The 3rd formation is from "Harry Potter" movies. The 4th formation I think was from "Jurassic Park" movies. The 5th formation was from "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies ships firing on each other & sinking one the ships. The 6th was a skull & crossbones which is the symbol of pirates.

It is also pretty cool that they can cannily determine what they are watching pretty well despite having never seen these movies or having been exposed to the cultural references. As a Canadian, I was always delighted as a child when the U.S. high school and college marching bands would come up from Washington and Oregon (2 states in the U.S., close to B.C.) to Victoria, B.C. for the Victoria Day Parade. A real crowd favourite. It’s awesome to see people from around the world enjoy watching marching bands field march! I did it in high school as part of band class and enjoyed performing for audiences. It does take a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun hearing the crowds enjoying the show even though my rural high school’s band was much, much smaller (we had 27 members). Each year in my hometown it hosts a field marching competition for statewide high schools to participate in and some professional traveling marching bands also come and put on a great show as well! It’s kind of a family tradition to learn musical instruments. My great grandparents played piano. My grandparents played piano and violin. I have aunts and uncles that play guitar, violin, trumpet. I have cousins that play drums, clarinet, guitar, violin, and keyboard/piano. I play flute, trumpet, and saxophone. My sister plays trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone. My niece plays trumpet. And I have friends that play various musical instruments as well. So it’s awesome to see people enjoying both the music and the formations on the field. Also while they like the field for its aesthetic, marching band folks like it because we use the markings as a guide to where we need to be at each beat of the song so the formation comes out correctly! Plus it’s college football and that’s like THE most watched sport here in the USA. I mean, at my job every Saturday we make sure all the televisions are on channels airing the games! And I used to live in a city with a major state college and game days were crazy! So much traffic, so many people, and just a spirit of community and fun all around!!! Love this channel! Always enjoy KZbin being like “Hey! Here’s a video you haven’t watched yet from a channel you like and have watched often!” I don’t comment often, but I do watch, like, and share every video I’ve watched so far on the channel! I love watching videos of people sharing and learning more about different cultures and places with others! There’s so many magnificent, wondrous, and beautiful things we humans have created and do that I think it’s great we get the chance at this time in history to so easily learn and share it!

Normally, a band starts learning the show the week of the game. The more complex shows, two weeks. In high school, we'd perform the same show twice if it is before competition. Once for the game, then the final perfected show for comps. Sometimes, we'd have the formation sheets at the end of the previous week so we could see what the next week's show would consist of.
