The question is: to what end ? Even if this team manages to beat Villareal and miraculously win the cup against United, can anybody objectively look at this team and think it would be able to compete in Champions League ? Name one trait about this team that screams progress or improvement that ought to be able to sustain them in tougher competition. We press lackadaisically, easily broken down in the back, no cohesive attacking plan and we sit back against teams regardless of how poor they are. Those frailties are not going away overnight just because we qualify for Champion League or buy more players in the summer. The fundamentals of this team are just poor and I'm afraid Arteta isn't going to change overnight to improve them and make us competitive again.

What happened here was experience and tactical knowledge, his inside knowledge of our players beat us, my hats off to Emery, he is a good coach. Arteta got tactically beaten and he didn’t make any changes. First goal Xhaka was beaten for pace and the fast players Chukizwe and Forsyth targeted Cabellos and Xhaka all day and Cabellos couldn’t catch them either. Chukizwe would drift inside, draw Cabellos and leave forsyth to destroy Xhaka. They targeted Xhaka the whole game, even Cabellos was too slow to deal with their pace. Emery saw a huge weakness and exploited it. Then Cabellos gets sent off for running past a player and accidentally stepping on his big toe and gets red, horrible call, shouldn’t even have been a free kick in my opinion. The ref was consistent tho, we screwed the game up tactically. First goal came down Xhaka’s side and too slow to get the clearance. They could have had four down that side we got lucky. Xhaka can be a good ball player but but he is a bit slow and that hurts your defense. Solution for next week I would Play Saka LB. He is really really good there and he will still attack, so we would actually have a complete left back not a space filler. it will give us an extra option going forward. Then for midfield, and I am not a big fan of Elneny, but he can defend with pace, I would use Elneny for the second leg with Party to defend those runs, shut that side out. If not Saka, then Soares at left back, but Saka will give us a lot more going forward and making runs from there, it’s another attacking option that would even make a couple of runs into the box from left back, and he will defend. Second tactical problem was no striker, after 30 minutes you have to realise you haven’t had a shot, no ones stretching the defense and we making it super easy to defend. In 2015 Aubameyang and Lacazette were both top 10 strikers in Europe, why not play them both in a 4-2-2-2 with attacking wingbacks and two defensive midfielders. I still believe in Arteta and I think it was a learning game for him, as I can understand what he was trying to do, and we had striking injuries. It was terrible, as long as he makes up for it next week and we make the final no stress. We are the better team. Ek IN
