So awesome. I think the reason the Mouse of Minsk was so unsettling and scary-looking was not only it's monstrous appearance, but how it moved! It looks gargantuan the way it moves slowly, yet with such fluidity, it looks eerily realistic. At first, I thought it was an old version of CG...but it's actually rotoscoped! No wonder! (They filmed live models of it, then overlapped it with animation) Once you realize how DIFFICULT and time-consuming it is to animate like that, you appreciate this epic scene even more. :D

That's so weird. I was super impressionable as a kid and I got plenty of nightmares from movies, but I feel exactly the opposite here--I always thought the Mouse of Minsk reveal was an overwhelmingly triumphant, "take that!" moment, like when George McFly punches Biff. To me, this is 100% distilled victory, and I remember for a long time I couldn't watch it without tearing up a little.
@HenryvKeiper7 жыл бұрын
Unibrow, I was the same way when I saw this in theaters as a kid. With the build up to this moment, I saw it as the final victory come at last. The only thought on my mind was, "Ha! Take that, cats!" However, I can see why some people would be freaked out by this. Don Bluth animated the Giant Mouse of Minsk the same way he animated the tractor in "Secret of NIMH": by tinting live-action objects and putting it in a 2D animated movie. It gives a weird kind of uncommon valley vibe.

Fortunately I've never seen that kind of er...mouse-dragon hybrid, but that rotoscoping was great! Seriously, something like 30 cats get terrorized by a 25 ft mechanical monster based on a fable character. Which spits "fire" (rockets) and has a scorpion-like tail. Not bad, Don Bluth!

That's why his first four movies- Secret of NIMH, this, Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven- are so dark, mature, scary and even violent. Even some of his later films pushed the limits of what you can put in a kid's movie. How Titan AE was his only PG rated film is beyond me.
