That roar sells it completely. I don't know what sound effect they used, but it sure does the damn job. Even now at 30, its still has that slightly unsettling feel to it.

So awesome. I think the reason the Mouse of Minsk was so unsettling and scary-looking was not only it's monstrous appearance, but how it moved! It looks gargantuan the way it moves slowly, yet with such fluidity, it looks eerily realistic. At first, I thought it was an old version of CG...but it's actually rotoscoped! No wonder! (They filmed live models of it, then overlapped it with animation) Once you realize how DIFFICULT and time-consuming it is to animate like that, you appreciate this epic scene even more. :D

That's so weird. I was super impressionable as a kid and I got plenty of nightmares from movies, but I feel exactly the opposite here--I always thought the Mouse of Minsk reveal was an overwhelmingly triumphant, "take that!" moment, like when George McFly punches Biff. To me, this is 100% distilled victory, and I remember for a long time I couldn't watch it without tearing up a little.
@HenryvKeiper
@HenryvKeiper 7 жыл бұрын
Unibrow, I was the same way when I saw this in theaters as a kid. With the build up to this moment, I saw it as the final victory come at last. The only thought on my mind was, "Ha! Take that, cats!" However, I can see why some people would be freaked out by this. Don Bluth animated the Giant Mouse of Minsk the same way he animated the tractor in "Secret of NIMH": by tinting live-action objects and putting it in a 2D animated movie. It gives a weird kind of uncommon valley vibe.

Fortunately I've never seen that kind of er...mouse-dragon hybrid, but that rotoscoping was great! Seriously, something like 30 cats get terrorized by a 25 ft mechanical monster based on a fable character. Which spits "fire" (rockets) and has a scorpion-like tail. Not bad, Don Bluth!

Brie no.20 Well, his philosophy always was you can show kids anything as long as there's a happy ending. That's why his first four movies- Secret of NIMH, this, Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven- are so dark, mature, scary and even violent. Even some of his later films pushed the limits of what you can put in a kid's movie. How Titan AE was his only PG rated film is beyond me.

While The Giant Mouse of Minsk looks utterly terrifying here, I think a lot of credit has to go to the animators for giving the face (as well as the body) of The Giant Mouse of Minsk a sort of 3D look to it despite being clear back from 1986 when hand animation was still a widely used method of animation.

Warren T. Cat is hot. I'm just going to say that. This scene also made me kind of freak out when I was a kid.

That's right! Will Ryan who played Petrie The Flyer also voiced Diget The Cockroach! 😃😉

"I wonder how you saw 'trust me' in Chinese?" LOL! S/O to the late John Finnegan (the voice of Warren T.), one of the quintessential New York actors.

Warren T. Cat was a total prick and I always loved watching him get what he deserved here, but at the same time, that giant mouse also scared the bejesus outta me when I was a kid! Granted, the scene is epic, but the way the monster is designed here is definitely what nightmares are made of! Ever see the movie "Event Horizon"? Imagine if Mickey Mouse died and went to Hell and then came back. Chances are, he be would be a gigantic mouse demon that looks EXACTLY like that huge abomination!

I wanted to be a mad scientist when I was a kid so while this was scary it was mainly just awesome. Anyway apparently Arin mentioned this on Game Grumps - as a fan of both things, what episode was that?
