Viltrox 75mm F1.2 | THE BEST Prime Lens for Sony A6400 and APS-C?!

Let's take a look at the Viltrox 75mm F1.2 a Prime lens for Sony APS-C cameras such as the A6400. I've been testing out this lens for a few weeks and it's possibly my new favorite prime lens for cropped sensor cameras! But is it better then the 56mm F1.4

It's labeled as PRO because it's metal, weather resistant, sharp right from F1.2, wide aperture, fast AF. In my opinion it really worth it's PRO label. This lens puts to shame many 2500+ euro/usd lenses from reputable manufacturers. I use this on the Sony a6700 and it's flawless. This lens makes me think that the big brands like Sony, Nikon, Canon screw us big time with their astronomical lens prices.

Dunno if its just me, but both audio and video production quality in this video feels like its taken a step over previous videos, not sure whats changed but I dunno if Curtis just seems more confident too. Good stuff man 👍👍

@@CurtisPadley Very cool review I'm glad you covered the Focal Legth to be honest > 100mm is way too much. I hoipe Viltrox makes some 50mm APS-C specific versions of their 75mm lines for APS-C just so the 50mm lens becomes 75mm focal length. If you want 50mm lens to rival the sigma then try the Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4 Lens you might get one cheap on black friday. I'd love to see a comparision it won TIPA 2022 award for best lens in its category.

Great insight as always... the inner introverted photographer in me always wants to buy focal lengths that reach further and further away, but I agree that this might just be a tad too tight a focal length. I bought the sigma 56mm for my Fuji earlier this year and I agree, it's one of the best I've ever bought for the price.

Just got myself the A6600 and have been looking for some lenses to have and this seems like a must buy to me. So sharp, no distortion to speak of and a really good price. Currently have the Sigma 18-50, so this will be a great one for some more zoom. Then I think I might get the Viltrox 13mm as well and I should be all good for basically anything I want to shoot.

Thank you for the video. I am mostly a full frame shooter but I bought a A6700 for light travel and the new Viltrox is one of my favorites. At full frame I use both 85mm and 135mm for portraits but always wanted Sony to make a 105/1.4 like Nikon. While this lens is neither 70 or 90mm it’s a great focal length to keep it between. The Also own the Sigma 56/1.4 so I use them both and they can compliment each other. Now waiting to see the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 to give us a great fast 40mm full frame equivalent. Take care.

Yes please do the comparison video Viltrox 75mm F1.2 vs Sigma 56mm F1.4 with test for photo and video AND show what distance you need to have between the object for the photos to come out well. Is Viltrox good for studio photos ? - show the required distance in the room ( Sigma vs Viltrox )

Hi Curtis! Great review.. Wanted to know if there are any updates on af performance after firmware update 1.0.4 in Nov 23 as people say that it was not reliable for fast moving subjects like birds, running pets, children, etc in the very first firmware? I am in the market for buying one. I currently have sigma 18-50 f2.8 for my a6700, looking to have a prime now-- confused between sigma 56 f1.4 and the this viltrox 75. Performance wise 56 seems to be reliable. Wether sealing, image quality wise viltrox seems better. Also this will add a bigger focal length for my use.

Hey Hey Curtis i have a question. I plan to buy a Sony a6400 with a 50mm 1.8 sony prime lense but i am worried about weather sealing of the lense. The winter is coming and i dont know how the lense is gonna react to the snow and rain. I know its not weather sealed. But i think it could take a couple of snowflakes and rain drops OR Not ??? Of course if it rains as hell than i wouldnt go out. I hope you can help me.

Thank you, Yes lens does come with a lens hood. 😎 And updated lenses in past with usb port, but only viltrox lenses. My puns are terrible and I love it! 🤣🤣

I love my 75 1.2 on Fuji. For street photography. Lately I've been just carrying around 18-50 and this in my bag. Granted I have the H2S even on X-T4 I've never had issues with the size/weight of the 75 1.2

How far does it need for portraits? I do school events usually candits. I’m willing to grab one but a bit concerned with its focal length

@@kawpaolasgamertag3502 You could try maybe renting one. I've never shot in a situation like yours so idk if it'll work for you. You do need a bit of room. But it depends what kind of shots you are going for. If you've ever used 85mm/135mm full frame equivalents. It sits somewhere between both. If you're walking around indoors I could see this lens becoming a bit more challenging. I've got some practice in with it for street so I can make it work for me, and I find it pretty easy to use personally.

I'm really wondering, if Viltrox can fix the tardy autofocus. The way it works at this point, you can't use it for video. That's sad... The focus breathing makes it worse yet. I guess I could focus it manually, but then I might as well use a Cine lens to boot!

😂 I have a few Viltrox lens for my Fujifilm XH2 and XT5 and a few for a Nikon Z6Ii and ZF. The 75mm f1.2 is a very good lens, i used it indoors at a family wedding and I found that it works best at f 1.4, l used the lens on a Fujifilm XT5 and the size was not a problem. I used it for fairly close subjects and people in different places in the dining area, the 1.4 gave me enough depth of field to get a family member holding their son and daughter so it worked really well.

I just got this lens for my A6400 and i cannot control aperture from my camera. I can control the aperture using the aperture ring on the lens and the camera registers it. I am in aperture mode and the switch on the lens is set to on (click) but using the dial on the back of the camera does nothing. Is this the default behavior or am i doing something wrong? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Is the Apeture set to the A mode on the lens? If not slide it into place

@@CurtisPadley if you are referring to the Click On/Off switch on the body of the lens, it does not matter to which position i set it to, still cannot control the aperture from the A6400 body.

Hello, I'm unsure why you are advising that I cannot use the same photos in a review that I may have used in a previous POV. I'll explain in detail to help you understand why I take this approach. When I first get a lens or camera I like to go out with it and test it first hand. Usually I make this into a POV, so audiences can see someone use a bit of equipment first hand. It also allows me to understand how a lens works in a real-world environment. This allow me to make findings about a bit of equipment and draw up some conclusions that I comment about in my videos. Some content creators will only take basic photos and say the lens/camera is brilliant. I don't like this approach. I like to use it how I would everyday. Cause if I'm investing hard earn cash into a certain bit of equipment I want really good photo examples and explanations. I also like filming povs in general, so I get to make a pov and making findings about a product. In addition, I hope my povs can inspire others to go out and create. Which is what I'm all about with this channel. So, then I will use some of these photos in my reviews because I think they are very good examples to dicuss my opinion and thoughts. It's a system I have started to do and it really works well for me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with me using photos I've taken in a pov in a reviews. Especially when you consider all the photos were taken with the same camera / lens combo. Hope that clears things up.

You okay dude? Seems like you had a little melt down! 👇😅 Viltrox have designed this lens for APS-C cameras, delighted to say you can use it with Fullframe. Just need to use a super-35 mode. In the title of my video you can also see I put "for Sony A6400 and APS-C" so I wasn't misleading in my title at all. If you don't know what APS-C means when you have a Fullframe camera, I can't help you there. Have a wonderful day 🙂
