Nice review, once again! Thank you! A few months ago I decided to get the Samyang 135mm F1.8. In comparison (based on your reviews), the Samyang performs slightly better in my opinion, too. I decided not to wait for the Viltrox as waiting for a DxO lens module can take too long. I've been waiting for a module like this for my Sigma 60-600 DG DN OS for months. So far, despite my repeated requests, they haven't published a module! The same applies to the Viltrox 27mm F1.2 and 75mm F1.2 - no DxO lens profile. But DxO offered a lens module for the Samyang!

I watched his review as well and the lens was one of the sharpest lenses he’s ever tested and my have been THE sharpest 135mm he’s ever tested. The focus seemed much faster and accurate with no stepping or hunting but he had the latest firmware update applied which seemed to fix any problems that may have been there. His copy at least was nearly flawless in every way. This is an amazingly good lens at any price let alone for $899. It’s odd that Mr. Frost’s copy did much worse with loCA and even up-close performance didn’t seem nearly as good wide open either and the Viltrox was clearly sharper than the Samyang but Christopher Frost says the Samyang was a bit sharper than the Viltrox. The only modern 135 f/2.8 I'm aware of is the ludicrously priced Zeiss Batis 135 f/2.8.

The auto focus "issue" is a Sony feature. My Sigma Art lenses for Canon EF (coincidentally including the 135/1.8) all do that with the Sigma EF to FE adapter on the Sony a7r3. The Sony cameras do phase shift and contrast mode auto focus. Phase shift gets close to the target, and then a front and back focus measures a (presumably) more accurate distance. It does that pumping motion every time on one-shot AF. This is a behavior, which the lens can choose though. The Sigma adapter is only doing it with the Art/Sport/Contemporary lenses, not with older Sigma or Canon lenses.
@christopherfrost24 күн бұрын
While you are correct that on Sony cameras AF-S mode is slower, it's not normally quite as bad as it was in this instance (trust me - I've tested nearly all lenses available on Sony cameras, including with adaptors). But the problem really isn't that bad on this lens

According to Petapixel the lens has a problem and they are delaying the release for a couple of months. That may be the rattling Chris identified.
@christopherfrost24 күн бұрын
I've read the Petapixel article and I was surprised by it. Viltrox sent me this final production copy of the lens last week and said it was working fine, except for the mild AF compatibility issue with older Sony cameras, and they asked me to publish a review on this date. I hope PP reach out to me next time with such articles, I would have been very happy to give clarification.

I think you may have to redo this review as you noted there is a new firmware update already . Other reviewers are in stark contrast of yours and that maybe attributed to the new firmware update .
@christopherfrost24 күн бұрын
The lens was running with the latest firmware. I'm not sure what you're referring to about the 'stark contrast' - if you mean the autofocus performance, as I explained in the review, Viltrox have told me it's a problem only with older Sony cameras.

ANother reason why I refuse to jump into Canon R system. It was clear since year 2018 by just comparing lenses between Sony, Nikon Z, and R at the time. Sony must re design everything into GMII, same with most RF lenses, Z glass was already high standard. Is still a dumb route taken by Canon abusing of their loyalty and Viltrox take their mask off qith this premium lenses. Might also affect Sigma´s market whom couriously is the only third party allowed with only one lens for R system up to date...

Why did you release this review when Viltrox asked reviewers not to? Viltrox emailed all reviewers to inform us that there was an issue with the 135mm f/1.8 Lab lens and that the company wanted more time to deal with the situation before we rendered a verdict on performance..
@christopherfrost24 күн бұрын
Why do you say that Viltrox asked me not to release this review? That's not the case. They sent me a final production copy of the lens last week, said it was fully ready for testing, and asked me to publish my review on this date.

@@MOTOJendays I don't think so, there's no comparison between the lens in this video, and the Canon RF135/1.8. I would never buy this lens at any price point, why invest in OEM tech in the body, if the lens is not up to par?
@MOTOJendays23 күн бұрын
@@G95G95 Lenses are up to par whether you choose to accept it or not lol. This isn't even on RF mount nor is it ever going to be so why are you trying to compare them? On Sony E it's more of a competitive market. It's as good as Sony 135 1.8 if not better, and debatably on par with the Samyang which is one of the best 135s that exist optically(chinese btw) And on Nikon when it arrives it'll be competing with the Plena at 1/3 of the price while being maybe %5 worse. There are plenty of reasons to invest into this lens. Just because it's not for you, doesn't mean the lens isn't good or on par. There's not a single indicator that you can really point out where this lens is lacking other than size and weight.
@G95G9523 күн бұрын
@@MOTOJendays the obvious reason that I'm comparing it to Canon, is because the comment we're responding to is about Canon, which makes their 135 to the highest standards in Japan. This viltrox knock off, is just that, a poor knock off of OEM and doesn't perform as good in terms of sharpness and AF precision as the OEM glass. There's currently a trend amongst broke Sony fanboys, they like to pretend that their bootleg lenses are as good as OEM, but everyone knows that they are not. I'm actually glad that the Canon lens eco system isn't polluted with junk, I buy all my RF glass used in like new condition and it's great that the used market isn't flooded with crappy bootleg knockoffs that I would never buy anyway.

Fuji needs to make a modern 85f1.2WR with the same 0.25x magnification as this lens, but maintaining perfect image quality at maximum magnification as the 56f1.2WR does.

@@muttishelfer9122 Amazing as the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 is, it only has 0.10x magnification, and even then it still needs to be stopped down. The Viltrox 135mm f1.8 at 0.25x is a close focus beast. Fuji has thus far kept their lenses reasonably priced and I'd gladly pay a bit extra for first party AF on a lens with a field of view as narrow as 15 degrees.
