Thank you for watching. As it turns out I totally forgot about the sensor crop on M50 so please multiply the numbers with Speedbooster further by 1.6 to get the final focal length... we are humans and make mistakes 🤗. So 50mm with speedbooster gets you 35.5mm but then M50 crop multiply by 1.6 and you get 56mm..... Which one do you have? Adapter, speedbooster or both? How is everyone enjoying the camera and what did you shoot this past weekend? Wishing everyone amazing week!!!!

Hi Zdenka, nice video, as always. Just one little thing: the 50mm lens usually acts as an 80mm equivalent lens on a Canon crop sensored camera(50mm x 1.6). Therefore, using it with the Viltrox Speedbooster it becomes a 56.8mm equivalent lens (80mm x 0.71). So it's still cropped in on an M50, but much less so than with the standard adapter. It looks lovely where you live. Have a great week too. Your eyes are looking good, I hope that means you're not having too many issues with them right now. 🙂

I would say with personal experience in travel that the Speed Booster with video usage is great. The 1080 setting FHD with Speed Booster will be beneficial more with the fact that you can step down the 1 stop in the aperture. Again I understand that this video was about photo quality. My comment is to those of us that are more about video usage with the M50. That being said, in the video setting on the M50, there is no noticeable softness because of the lower and fast motion. I personally would not use the Speed Booster with photos, as the regular EF adapter works well. Great video! I love what you do and always looking forward to more videos from you.

Very good test! That's the key with speedbooster....you don't have to always shoot wide open, the fov is a bonus by itself. I tend to only go wide open in very low light or for backgrounds that I want blurry. So many people say negative things but it's just another tool and you need to work out the pro's and cons.

I think the speedbooster should be used only for scenarios while shooting 4K on the M50. 4k by default has a 2x crop factor in the M50. When you use the speedbooster, it roughly brings it down to 1.42 approximately.

One thing nobody mentions about the speedbooster is if it affects Minimum Focus Distance. Do you know? P.S. focal length : 0.71 booster * 1.6 crop = 1.13, so 50mm * 1.13 = 56.5 Old soldiers never die - just like this topic 😊

Thanks for the great comparison! Just like to point out it's not f1.2 for the speedboosted f1.8. It should be 1.8 x 1.6 (crop factor) x 0.71 (speedbooster factor) = f2.0. The reason you see more bokeh in the speedboosted lens is because the 50mm lens becomes 56.8mm (50 x 1.6 x 0.71). The focal length is 6.8mm longer giving a shallower depth of field. Also the standard 50mm f1.8 is one of the worst performer in the entire Canon range especially when wide open.

Softer photos on 100% crop and a little vignetting vs wider view and 1 stop of light to me is a no brainer... instead of spending $1.5-2k in the Eos RP with 1 lens and just half of that on the M50 with more EF lens is just an easy pick... speed booster for the win!

Thanks for another great video on the M-50. I didn't pick up a speed booster, I do have a lens adapter though. I assumed that the speed booster would affect the sharpness of the photo's but it seems it is really minimal and mostly in the corners. I think I'll stick with the lens mount adapter. I've shot crop sensor since I began with photography so I really see no reason to purchase one even with the additional advantage of the 1 stop of light with the speed booster. Aren't kids fun? My youngest is 44 but we have grandchildren and great-grandchildren ranging in ages from 5 months to 27 yrs old. Love them all and really glad they don't live in my house. I love for them to visit but I also love for them to leave, unfortunately not an option when they're your own. Hi Zdenka, your seaside intro for this video is stunning: a really moody symphony in purple and blue! I love the Viltrox Speedbooster and think, the gain of the merely original focal length and aperture of the EF-Lenses is worth the compromise of the slightly smooth edges in the pictures.

Outside of landscapes (which I don't do a lot of), corner sharpness is never anything I'm concerned with as my subjects are rarely found there. Also corner softness is a non-issue if I'm going for nice bokeh anyway. Both adapters are great if you have an M50, just have to be aware there's a limit to what the speedbooster can accomplish. Don't buy it and expect it to make the M50 full frame. Edit: Ahoj Z!

I think the original question about the vignetting may actually be something completely different. I’ve noticed if I use a lens designed for a cropped camera (like my Sigma 30mm f/1.4) the speed booster will show a physical vignette. For that lens I have to use a normal adapter on my M50... which also means I lose out on the extra stop and 0.71 which I was wanting to make 4K livable. So it’s good to own both adapters, depending on your arsenal of lenses. So my nifty 50 on the speed booster ends up being pretty close to my sigma on a raw adapter... but is WAY lighter.

Zdenka, thanks for the comparison. I am not absolutely sure but ... an EF lens in the M50, lets say a 50 mm, works not as a 50 mm but like an 85 mm,so with the speedbooster it is to that focal length that you apply the reduction. Congratulations on your growing channel.

I have both. light which goes through the booster has to go through more glass and that glass enlarge the picture as I read. So obviously it will be softer. I would not use this for photography much. But for video shooting a little softer image would not make a huge difference. so my use of the speed booster is primarily for video. I get more light, wider angle and lower aperture. Only flip side is that you can not use EF-S lenses with it.

Hi Zdenka, thanks for sharing and taking the time to produce a great review of the Viltrox speed booster picture quality - interesting. I have the standard Viltrox adapter and I am very pleased with this as it increases the number and type of lens I can use - always a bonus! Looking at the image files you kindly provided, the speed booster does slightly soften the image which helps certain shots tremendously if you want to create a softer feel. Personally though I do prefer my images to be nice and sharp, as I can always soften then if editing, but that's just me!!! As I am a beginner in leisure photography, getting things sharp is one of the challenges, as is experimenting with the other things the M50 can do. It's all good fun and a pleasant learning curve - helped by very interesting and useful videos like yours. Thanks and enjoy.

Hello! We were just commenting about the release of the new Canon camera's just yesterday and today they announced them. I have not pre-ordered because I am still not sure if I want mirrorless or dslr. I want to see a little more about image quality. I think the price for the 90D is a little high if you get it in a bundle. I can get a full frame 6D mii or full frame mirrorless r mount for the price they are asking for a cropped sensor camera. I also see Sony released 2 new cameras also! They planned that perfectly! Lol! Curious to know your thoughts on the one or both of the Canon offerings. Have a great day!

Thanks for this, Zdenka, and for uploading the photos so that we can download them and compare the relative merits of the adapter and the speedbooster. In effect, the speedbooster, does also provide a different focal length (it actually makes a wider angle lens of any lens that you are using, despite the crop factor of mirrorless cameras, such as the Canon M50). So, it is not really an either/or choice in terms of focal length. There are other third party speedboosters, in addition to the Viltrox. For example, the Andoer EF-E II Lens Mount Auto Focus Reducer Speed Booster Adapter for Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera.

I'm curious about why the comparison between a full frame sensor and an APS-C. Although the crop factor would mean different images, I think a 100% of an 80D and a 100% of the m50 (given the similar sensors) is a more valid comparison.

With regards to the adjusted focal lengths: As the M50 is a 1.6x crop that should be taken into account first, no? So the 5d at 200mm is equivalent to M50 at 227mm (hence why it's zoomed it a bit more). [Edit] just read other comments/replies addressing this.

Very informative but one thing you missed ie. adapter accepts all EF and EFS lenses ie. adapter accepts all full frame and crop sensor lenses but speed booster only accepts full frame lenses so there is a big limitation with speedbooster as there more crop sensor lenses than full frame lenses. Do you suggest manipulating crop sensor lenses to fit with speed booster?

@okaro65954 жыл бұрын
That limitation is not an oversight. It is how the speed booster works. It cannot work on an APS-C lens. There is nothing to boost, the sensor already uses the whole image circle. There are far more full frame lenses. There ha been 152 EF lenses and 24 EF-S lenses. This includes different versions.

The thing I wonder about is whether the more expensive Metabones speed booster has the same result in the corners? This video suggests the corner softness is a speed booster issue, but what if it is a Viltrox issue? It is possible that Metabones is just making a huge profit while producing the identical product. But it is also possible that the extra costs are due to better glass, better manufacturing processes, and better research and design processes. I do not know the answer to this, but I have a suspicion that the Metabones speed booster would produce a better result.
@ZdenkaDarula5 жыл бұрын
Very interesting comment... thank you. Truthfully I don't even know the product you are talking about so I am going to research it and possibly ask them if they would be interest in review... thanks for pointing it out
@artistjoh5 жыл бұрын
Zdenka Darula great if you could make the same comparison using the more expensive speed booster vs the Viltrox vs Full Frame. I would also suggest including a plain adapter without glass. The reason I suggest this is that a lens designed for full frame normally performs less well on an APS-C sensor. On the Metabones website they state that the Metabones speed booster has improved MTF but in fine print below they qualify this as “compared to adapter without glass. They are trying to imply that MTF is improved over the full frame result, but in fact they are only talking about adapted lenses. Your testing regime is perfect for the Viltrox. It would be even more valuable to include the other possible options. I agree with you, that even with a poorer result, the advantages outweigh relatively small problems. It is why I think that people who won’t use filters in fear that they lose sharpness are foolish - it is in fact a matter of weighing the relative merits of advantages vs disadvantages and the filter wins in most cases in my (and most photographers/videographers) opinion. Focal reducers (“speed booster” is just the marketing name that Metabones introduced to sell more focal reducers) are brilliant - just like teleconverters, they give us more options and are one more reason to love mirrorless cameras.

Hello, my real estate set up is a Canon M50 w/ the Laowa 9mm f2.8 ef-m mount lens. Which equates to a 13.5mm full frame. Is there a Viltrox speed booster or anything that will allow me to get better/wider 4k and allow more light in? I run into some houses with very poor natural light.

It was recommended that I get an M42 (lens) to Canon EF, but as far as I know Canon does not fit on a M4/3 camera. Can u tell me exactly what I need? Thnx in advance. M

It all depends if you want the camera close to you or far away... if close then regular kit lens is fine. If far away you need telephoto ... best of luck.

I use both, and I like quality from both and for the final result, unless the person start doing some pixel peeping, I guess the difference won't be noticeable. What I can say is, with my 50mm 1.8, depending on the subject(mainly moving ones) the focus get less precise when using 1.2 but that's normal considering the the usage of an adapter(imo of course), the only case that I can say that the focus was terrible is when I used Sigma 24mm 1.4 with the speed booster, this one the focus missed almost every time, even at 1.4, but I wasn't able to do any in depth tests and I might be doing something wrong with my settings anyway.

APSC crop factor multiplied by the 0.71 (1.6x0.71=1.136) multiply it by the lens focal length and the aperture. ex; 50mm multply by 1.136 is equals 56.8mm equivalent on a fullframe not 35mm as you said, also the 70mm is not going to be a 49mm focal length...as you can see on your sample images the M50 with the viltrox adapter are more compressed than with the fullframe 5d4.

Surprisingly, I found the colors more pleasing on the M50 but definitely softer However, not by much. I have commented before that I had the M50 when it first came out but since I only shoot stills, I just found it slightly underwhelming of I needed a pro level shot. But,the more I watch your channel, I keep thinking about getting the M50 again but using the speed booster and adapter. I am waiting to see what Canon does as I am sure you have heard the rumors about the M6 m2. I still need a viewfinder and I don't think that has one. I need a camera desperately! My poor Nikon is holding on for dear life! I picked up a D3300 after my T3i died. That's how long it's been! I just bought a new phone and never thought I would be using it as a go to but the photo's are fantastic. I still need a dslr or mirrorless but in the meantime, this might have to do. There's a common complaint about the speed booster going around on the internet. It seems to cause battery issues if you keep it connected to a camera overnight it completely drain the battery. Just wanted to ask whether that is a general issue or is it a manufacturing defect in some of the samples (whether you faced the same problem). Also in case that is a general issue, is the adapter also affected? And finally, are there any noticeable differences between the Viltrox adapter and the expensive Canon adapter?

Noooooo on an aps-c sensor a 50mm lens will be 50x1.6x0.71=56.8mm. The main problem is not only the softness which it introduces in the corners at low f-stop numbers (unlike the numbers in your test which were mostly f8) but also the chromatic aberration is severe...

I don't understand the scuttle-butt out on the net about this. For me it's a simple choice, I like paranormal investigations and that requires going through abandoned old places with no utilities [light] at night and when I am faced with the choice 1, SUPER SHARP or 2, BRIGHTER NIGHT SHOTS LESS SHARP It's a simple choice what good is a perfectly sharp in focus picture if it is under-exposed and nearly a blacked out image. The speed booster captures more light at the cost of another piece of glass to add to the refractory factor. It's not a hard choice, that's especially true if you have BOTH speed booster and Adapter. Ya the EF 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens for lower light and needs the adapter to work. And it does not have that extra piece of glass. But the speed booster images seem to let more light in so they still come out brighter. The conclusion is when I absolutely have to have more light and the ef 550mm f/1.8 wont do, then I whip out the speed booster and sacrifice a tiny bit of res for a properly exposed shot. No brainier, be prepared with both Speed boost AND adapter. The adapter is cheap, no need to squabble over 50 bucks. I started using an old fashioned light meter again to judge that fine line between speed boost or adapter for my ghost hunting.

Hello Zdenka, I bought the speedbooster on your recommendation. I really like it with M50 and 50mm, 85mm and 100mm prime. I think it is usable for many shots. For Architecture it is critical, as there seems to be more distortion and the colors are also different (also observed in your comparison) and I am lazy in post. I used the booster also with my Lensbaby, but here the vignetting makes using the baby less fun. I have a cheapo Ukrainian replacement which I like better anyhow. The Tamron Fisheye Zoom was a disaster. CA is visible in the thumbnail... thanks for your fun and great content! Do you have something on candid portrait shooting?
