I don't think this was a good track to start with for Btbam. It's literally in the middle of a concept album and has no beginning or resolution. So many other songs would have been a better introduction.

Agreed. I think Parallax: Future Sequence and on would have been a good starting point for them. Maybe "Coma Machine" from Coma Ecliptic would be a good intro to BTBAM.

Also, it's worth mentioning that this album flows together as one seamless piece of music, and is absolutely a concept album. That's why it starts and ends abruptly. You got the end of "Sun of Nothing" at the beginning, which if you guys do that song the lyrics are REALLY cool. They do a lot of concept albums.

Cleasn were nice, agreed. Screams are nice if they are necessary and needed for the part. Get no feeling whatsoever here. So taste...you know. Screams from Leprous and the mixture ratio seems more appropriate for me but in the end I'm good without any because they will always have the stigma of immaturity for me.

One of my favorite aspects of BTBAM is their use of dissonance. Often bands will use dissonance briefly to temporarily build up a resolve to put the audience at ease. BTBAM does this incredibly smart by introducing multiple passages of dissonance before AND after the resolve. This mirrors life much better. Is there really ever a happy ending? No, just moments of joy between painful beginnings and endings.

The problem with doing a stand alone reaction to "Ants Of The Sky" is that Colors is a concept album and this song is the worst choice you could have made, because it's smack in the middle of the track listing. So this reaction compares to randomly reading a chapter in the middle of a book. You might enjoy the writing, but you're experiencing it out of context because you didn't start at the beginning, and so you don't know how it fits in the grand scheme. The tracks on "Colors" CAN be listened to individually, BUUUUUUUT..... they shouldn't be viewed as songs in and of themselves, rather as parts of a whole, because they're interconnected like puzzle pieces in a couple of ways: Firstly, each song's outro doubly serves as the intro to the next (establishing continuous flow from the album's prologue to its conclusion) and secondly, riffs, themes and tones are periodically repeated to remind the listener of the presence of a thematic strand running throughout. Soooo, this being said, and EVERYONE IN THE COMMENTS ARE SAYING THIS: THE BEST WAY TO BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE "COLORS" IS TO LISTEN TO IT AS A SINGLE 62-MINUTE LONG SUITE (THE WAY BTBAM WROTE IT) AND IN ONE SITTING. Another example: If you watch The Red Wedding out of context on KZbin, it's just a scene of a massacre at a wedding and you don't feel anything. You don't know who the characters are, how they arrived at this moment, why the massacre is happening, when it occurs in the series in relation to the books, who planned it, and how it affects the story. When you arrive at The Red Wedding after reading the books and/or watching Game Of Thrones from the beginning though, IT RIPS YOUR HEART OUT OF YOUR CHEST AND LEAVES YOU IN TEARS. Much better songs to start out with are: - Mordecai - Alaska - All Bodies - Backwards Marathon - Selkies: The Endless Obsession - Swim To The Moon

This is also why you dont hear much off this album live now days and if you do it is truncated version to make it make sense OUTSIDE of the concept of the album.

Where's White Walls..
@Machete__Squad
@Machete__Squad 6 жыл бұрын
I suggested White Walls from this same performance, which was them playing their Colors album straight through because the album flows like one continuous song followed by an intermission and a second show performed after that was a fan voted set list. They are all also if I remember correctly straight edge, they don't do anything, no drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes, so the line about tossing back a few is more about the temptation of just giving up and drifting through life high rather than saying that is what should be done. As far as it being from a concept album in my opinion it is a concept album but let me explain. So it is a musically conceptual album, but not a lyrically conceptual album. So the composition of each track carries a musical concept throughout the album that makes it flow and feel like one large song rather than 10(if I remember correctly) individual songs. Lyrically each track touches on different subjects but it could be argued that the overall concept lyrically is personal happiness with each track being a different narrator sharing their journey towards that goal, with each song having it's own perspective of what personal happiness is to them, hence personal. Now I am not sure if I agree with that completely some of their other albums are most definitely lyrically conceptual but I am not sure if Colors was meant to be. A way it could be described is that there are three types of "concept" albums. There is the instrumentally conceptual album that carries musical themes throughout the album, there is "Rock Opera" concept albums where the album tells a story lyrically throughout without necessarily carrying instrumental themes throughout, and then there would be I guess full concept albums where it is instrumentally and lyrically conceptual through out. Not sure if you guys will like White Walls after seeing your reaction to this but hey give it a chance it is better than this song if you ask me and isn't quite as all over the place, but BtBaM is like this, very prog metal and they like to push the envelope on what works and what doesn't. Glad you checked them out though if you give them a second listen I suggest White Walls from this album/live show or maybe even Selkies: The Endless Obsession which was played on the second have of the show as their closing song, both are up there for me as favorite songs by the band.

I wrote this song in an airport. When I listen to music on my headphones, I like to watch the world work and think about what every single person is doing that day. This song is about each one of us creating our own itinerary and flying through our life on one big vacation. Trying to find happiness, perfection, and love. It’s a “bloody, bumpy” road for most, and others it’s a wonderful journey. We fly away from our problems and towards our solutions (at least what we think are our solutions). We are the ants of the sky...aka the walking dead." -Tommy

Ely Gallego I just saw that reaction. I must say I was very, very surprised Vin didn't get that song... There's a reason Opeth was the band everybody looked up to in the 2000's, and now in the 2010's every prog band has as a major influence... He basically wanted a musical masterpiece to be 2 minutes long and called it bland and forgettable! Ahah. Dude was so far behind what's going on, it's not even funny. He may catch up eventually, he has to keep listening.

COLORS- is in a sense is one long piece of music. You are hearing one part of that huge piece. This song in particular is about Aliens. It's also part of a concept that crosses albums with certain songs but came together as a whole on the Parallax 1 and 2. The whole story is genius.

Like others have said this song is meant to be listened to within the context of the whole album. It plays as one song. This is definitely a fan favorite but not the best introductory song.

Do Between the Buried and Me. Extremophile elite. If you're confused by them then its on you. Too often people want to fit everything in categories and this band constantly defies that way of thinking. Its beautiful to have the transitions and blends through genre and through thought. You can always find something new in each song. The colors album was the start of a journey for them. Always evolving and always interesting. Few bands have this ability. Just enjoy it. The more you listen to them the better they get.

Very difficult to do one song off this album(Colors) in particular. If I were to ever recommend a full album to review, this would be my first choice. Great song, but it’s like starting a book in chapter 5 and put the book down before chapter 6... BTBAM is hard to grasp at first, because it’s so intense and a million miles on hour. Gojira Rules obviously. That's why I'm so confused as to why the O.P. said to "never" do live first o.o Personally if I'm looking up a new band someone suggests, that's my go-to to make a definite decision whether "yeah I like them" or not. Live tells all.

_The.Pony_ exactly! I will admit studio recordings can showcase nice touches with effects and synth, but raw live performances prove their worth. Check out grails dude

These guys are an amazing band. Up there with neo in my opinion. Lots of variation in their back cat. This track is from the middle track of a concept record called colours. One of the best prog metal albums of all time.

You are right its a concept record. The whole album can basically seen as one huge song.

I really like this album because every song flows into the next. I dig that seamless stuff. Deftones did that on their Koi No Yokan album as well. “White Walls” is my jam off this album. Epic as hell. Would love to see a reaction to “Adora Vivos “ by Woods Of Ypres.

This song is about halfway through an album that is one continuous musical piece, sort of the halftime break.

If you want to understand and want to listen to it again you have to listen to the whole album. It seems like it ends abruptly because this whole album flows together. The album is called colors and what I take from it is about a bad acid trip.

Btbam directly translates to life, the band is all about forward thinking and treating everything in the world as equals, i suggest taking the lyrics in with the mindset that they are passionate, growling vocals arent negative, they WANT u to hear it

How does a reaction channel find out before-hand if a certain band will be a 'copyright strike'? I'm just curious, I have no intention of starting my own channel. As a fan of the channel it would be nice to know ahead of time before asking for a reaction, imo. Is there a way for us average Joe/Jane's to find out?

Was this recommended? Why? It’s practically impossible to listen to just one song from this album since they’re all seamlessly connected.

They did Sons of Winter and Stars awhile back (not the live version though sadly) but I've been telling them to do Loneliness (Winter) because they are going to see them in concert I think with Ne Obliviscaris and Loneliness will surely be played since its a tour for Forest Seasons.

This album... This album is in my top 5 albums of all time. To me, it's the progressive metal equivalent of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Musically, I would think this is a concept album. It is basically one big hour long song, You guys were thrown right in the middle of it, lol. Though, the lyrics seem to have a more abstract approach, and don't really seem to follow much of a concept at all. I believe you got the meaning of the song down as well. Ironically, Ants of the Sky was wrote first and originally was going to be the first song on the album. Tommy Rogers (vocalist / keys) and others immediately started writing this song when they got some downtime from touring / travelling. This album is truly an experience from start to finish. It would be great if y'all did a full album reaction to this, but you'd probably want to hear more of the band first. The band is a bit of grower to many people. I LOVED your reactions to the hoe down / bluegrass section @ 14:17 🤣

The thing with this album is that it is part of a concept album called Colors. There are themes throughout the album that repeat and it is designed to be one complete song listened straight through. In fAct the live show you watched is when they played the entire Colors album live straight through. They are definitely a difficult and challenging listen but the cohesion is seen from a larger perspective in the case of this album. Their most recent stuff is much more individual song oriented. I would recommend Condemned to the Gallows or Astral Body,as better stand alone songs. You definitely were butting into a conversation on this track.

Yep. They do concept albums. Their lyrics are tough to understand a lot of the time even in context with the album, but out of context it's impossible. Haha. It seems like you'd probably like parallax or even coma ecliptic better, though.

Finally some BtBaM! This song is in the middle of an album thats essentially a 63 minute long song, so the reason for the abrupt start and stop is that it flows from one song right into another. Another song to check out from them is Silent Flight Parliament/Goodbye to Everything live @ the Fidelitorium
