Vince started writing this song when Keith Whitley died, but he never finished it until his brother died. Patty was a real trooper here.

Actually you have the order reversed. He started writing it when Keith Whitley died and the whole first verse was about Keith. When he says you are no stranger to the rain is a direct reference to Keith Whitley song I'm no stranger to the Rain. He finished the song A couple of years later when his brother passed away

George Jones was a good friend and mentor to Vince Gill. That is why this is effecting Vince so much. This performance is so hard to keep a dry eye through. The strength of Patty to take over when she knew Vince was struggling was great to see. This guitar solo in the middle really isn't a part of the song, it was just Vince regaining his composure and letting his guitar speak for him, it was beautiful.

Vince was close with George. Jones nicknamed him Sweet Pea. But he said in a podcast that it was hearing Patty’s voice come in that broke him up. Then he improvised the guitar solo to give himself some time to get it together. Shout out to Garth Brooks down front for being the first to stand up to support him.

Patti had retired from performing for 13 years until Chris Stapleton asked her to perform last year with him in a fund raising concert after their home state of Kentucky was flooded. She now back performing, has been inducted into the hall of fame. Their performance at that concert of You’ll Never leave Harlan Alive and at the CMA is stunning, great blend of voices, both their father’s were coal miners, so heartfelt and she has still got it

This was at George Jones' funeral - whose body was in the closed casket down front. (George Jones helped Vince get his career started, and nicknamed Vince “Sweet Pea” ). George had struggled with alcohol and drugs for several years before he became a Christian and sobered up, and Vince had a half-brother who had struggled with alcohol and drugs and died in 1993 in his 50s of a massive heart attack. In fact, because George's wife was a Christian and helped him and loved him all through the struggles, George - in a prayer one night - told God that if God would help him he would give up the vices - and he did. According to George's wife, when George died, he had been in the hospital for five days, of which George had been in a comma the last three. George had just laid with his eyes closed and never said a word. Then, as George's wife and his doctor stood at the foot of the hospital bed, George opened his eyes, looked at the ceiling and said, "I've been looking for you. I'm George Jones", and then died. George's wife says she knows George was talking to God. Vince had written this song for his brother after his brother's death, and that's why it is so special to Vince. Patty Loveless was a good friend to both, and was there to help Vince get through the song. The song is about The mountain ( Heaven ) that his brother had to climb.

As others have stated, it was originally about, Keith Whitley, who was a country singer before passing from alcohol poisoning. He was amazing! After the first verse that references a few of Whitley's songs, it was left incomplete until the death of Gill's brother, and was dedicated to him instead. I'm sure that while performing this at his friend's funeral, all of that emotion hit him. I really believe he was mourning all three at once.

Vince was supposed to do a guitar solo, but in order to regain control, the band and the organizers of George's funeral, let him play as long as he needed. Kudos to Patty for helping her friend and also for Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood to be the first to stand up to give him the support he needed. Vince wrote that song for his brother, and to his best friend Keith Whitley. Since George was such an icon and a mentor to Vince, he was also singing it for George's wife Nancy (sitting in the front row with short black hair). BTW, when Vince talks about George and 'they don't make those shoes anymore', he's talking about the song that George recorded awhile back 'Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes'. Of course, I know you like live but in this case, please watch the official video as you will see who George is singing about. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKmrm4Wno75qsKM
