Great interview.Walter is the world's authority on The Musicology of The Beatles and his influential two-volume work [The Beatles as Musicians] is excellent.

The man exudes such warm, such deep-seated insight, humility and sheer passion as he shares his knowledge. A most enlightening interview.

I always enjoy people discussing the power and greatness of The Beatles but what was missing from this interview was the mention of the immense contribution of Sir George Martin. Would Eleanor Rigby have had the same effect it had if Sir George hadn't provided the dramatic orchestration?

I wish this was longer. And it would have been great if they had a piano there to demonstrate some of the technical things they were discussing.

Good interview! Just one thing. He uses the intro to 'If I Fell' as an example of an unusual chord progression only John was capable of writing. When it turns out the intro is the part of the song Paul claims to have written. FYI, you can read about this and all of the songs on the Beatles Bible website.

I have noticed, while watching videos which mentions the Beatles in America in 1964, that no one ever brings up the fact that in January and February 1964, the US was in mourning. President Kennedy was assassinated the at the end of November the year before, and the country was still in shock; and everything was down and somber. The Beatles were a breath of fresh air, and helped the nation heal. They were getting big at just the right time as far as I was concerned, and I was there. I was eleven at the time, and sixty eight now.

It doesn’t explain why it was the Beatles, and not the hundreds of other entertainers and singers in 1964, who energize the world.

Paul played the guitar solo in "Good Morning, Good Morning" as well.

His lead playing is very distinctive. That solo is very similar in style and sound to his solo on Taxman.

Walter is a superb speaker on the Beatles and is very knowledgeable. It's a shame he's not interviewed more. Regarding Harrison, before admitting he'd never be a master sitar player and forever be a student, George practically gave up his lead guitar duties for two years, hence Paul having to play lead on so many songs between 1965 and 1967, from Another Girl to Taxman, then on to Sgt Pepper (song) and Good Morning Good Morning, etc.

Ringo’s approach to drums is rather unique as he was left handed, hence he “ led with his left “ . Ironic two lefties in the band. Ps. Paul came up with the drum riff for Ticket To Ride . Comparing Macca to other bassists is unfair. Paul may have not been a technician ,played with a pick etc, but you can’t forget how melodic his basslines were. In other words if you saw a notated score of any given song, the bass line would be otherworldly. “ Something “as one out of possibly a hundred songs that had bass lines that were monumental .

I've heard different things concerning what Paul actually contributed the drumming on Ticket. I've heard that he suggested the actual drum pattern, and I've also heard that he suggested the tempo latency that ringo does in the beginning verse of the song. I'm not sure what is true here.

How could The Beatles be the forefront of the "classical realm" in the 60s??? They were a rock band.

To me he's got a slight Lennon bias. Paul does the more interesting innovative melody in my view whereas John is more rythmic and songstructure innovative. George was definitely matching J&P in the last year and his solo work is on the whole better than Lennon. In part because John gave up for at least five years and was taken early but George's bad albums were not as bad as J&P s

They were here at the right time. I always liked them and so does the majority of people. Several songs they did, a lot of lyrics did not make much sense.

"Yoko Ono characterizing John as Mozart and Paul as Salieri". Always the same, she thinks John needs to be defended and she defends John by attacking Paul. The more I know about her the less I like her.

I, unlike many others, have never had a problem with Yoko but I believe this guy doesn't necessarily know what he's talking about when he claims that Yoko influenced Johns songwriting as far as expanding his subject matter. I've been reading about the Beatles for about 50 years and I have never read anything that even hints of that.

Ur thinking is quite natural. But the expert has said the truth for example if u look at the song imagine it's not pure Lennon song bcoz there is similar song written by yoko yo which was Chinese but Lennon wrote it afterward again as a example it

First of all I'm even more wary of whatever it is you're positing because Yoko is Japanese, not Chinese and if you don't know that, I would question your actual awareness of the subject". Second, like the old sayings go, "There's nothing new under the sun!" and; "All art is derivative"... and that is especially true of music. When it comes to art, there's no such thing as pure and Lennon has said as much many times in many different ways regarding his songwriting even going so far as to reference particular songs that inspired his own compositions and lyrics of his that were take offs of lyrics written by others. As to the question of Yoko being a direct influence, again, I've been a Beatles fan and have been reading about them for about 50 years and I have never read anything that even hints of that so I would challenge you to produce an actual example.
